Lisa is joined by Dr. Gregory Scott Brown who talks about his book, The Self-Healing Mind: An Essential Five-Step Practice to Overcoming Anxiety, and Depression and Revitalizing Your Life. Gregory Scott Brown, MD, is an integrative psychiatrist, mental health writer, and author of The Self-Healing Mind: An Essential Five-Step Practice to Overcoming Anxiety, and Depression and Revitalizing Your Life (Harper Wave, June 2022). But despite being a doctor who works with patients and commonly gives advice, it is his personal story that introduced him to understand the importance of mental health.
In 2019, he wrote for Men’s Health magazine, “I’m a psychiatrist, husband, a man of color, and proud wellness advocate. Every day, I see patients and tell them: Talk, speak up. But a decade ago, suffering from depression. I didn’t say a word.”
He discovered self-care early on, and he attributes a significant part of his recovery to learning how to utilize self-care in a way that was effective. It would be years later until he came to understand that self-care is evidence-based medicine – a realization that ultimately led to the writing of his first book, The Self-Healing Mind.
Greg’s work in the mental health space extends beyond seeing patients in his clinic or providing expert commentary on mental health topics in the news. For the past several years, Greg has hosted conversations about mental health either on social media or for his Men’s Health column about topics including student-athlete mental, coping with the stress of a chaotic news cycle, and cultural barriers to accessing mental healthcare.
Greg has interviewed remarkable men and women about mental health topics including Marquette Men’s Basketball Coach Shaka Smart, journalist Lisa Ling, news anchor Don Lemon, and professor Matt Johnson from the Hopkins Center for Psychedelic Medicine, and actor and songwriter Common. He’s also interviewed grassroots wellness champions including Chris Isom and Alec Brownridge who started a yoga workshop for men with a focus on the social and emotional needs of men of color. Greg’s mission is to change the way we talk and think about mental health and that starts with having candid conversations about how mental health affects the way we work, live, and love.BOOK DESCRIPTION - The Self-Healing Mind: An Essential Five-Step Practice to Overcoming Anxiety, and Depression and Revitalizing Your Life.
Mental health is the driving force behind every decision we make - how we live, work, and love. Too many of us suffer from depression and anxiety, impeding our choices and quality of life, and the numbers are growing across the globe despite the proliferation of prescription drugs. But there is another, proven, way to achieve mental wellness beyond antidepressants and talk therapy. Practicing psychiatrist Gregory Scott Brown believes that mental health begins with actionable self-care. Approached the right way, self-care is a powerful medicine that can help you improve and sustain your mental health. The Self-Healing Mind is a holistic approach to emotional and psychological healing that focuses on how evidence-based self-care strategies can be used to improve mental health. Dr. Brown challenges the current state of mental health care and the messaging around it, showing us how to move past outdated notions of “broken” brains and chemical imbalances. While he agrees that drugs and therapy in some cases are important for healing, his personal and professional experience has taught him that lifestyle interventions are also key to sustainable mental wellness. Dr. Brown’s clinical philosophy supports an integrative approach that utilizes a combination of conventional treatments (medication and psychotherapy) with what he calls the Five Pillars of Self-Care: breathing mindful

Lisa is joined by Jessica Van Antwerp, LMT, CPS the Owner of Integral Travel. Jessica is also a Retreat Leader.
The word “unflappable” has been used to describe Jessica by more than one person. But she would absolutely not describe herself that way. Prone to anxiety, self-doubt was programmed into her psyche from a very young age. That anxiety was compounded by weight and body-image issues and low self-esteem, which led her to addiction. She’s done a lot of work to conquer these issues. She changed her diet and developed an exercise routine that helps her maintain a healthy body weight without it having to be a part-time job. She devoted herself to a daily practice of qigong and meditation that helps ease the worries in her heart and mind. She uses these practices on a daily basis to quell her anxiety. And based on the above perception of her, they must work!
Jessica absolutely loves sharing the knowledge and wisdom she’s developed through her ordeals. Becoming a member of the Integral Travel team has given her the opportunity to take people out of their daily routines to expose them to new ways of being and seeing things, affecting personal growth and empowerment in their own wellbeing. And there is nothing more fulfilling to her than that. From teaching stretches that address pain patterns, meditation techniques to find peace in one’s heart, to sharing delicious, nutritious recipes, she loves being healthy – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Because when we are healthy, we feel good. And when we feel good, we become beacons of light, inspiring everyone we come into contact with, making the world a better place. And we all know the world needs more of us.From https://integraltravel.com/about-us/what-is-integral-travel/

    From Megan's website: https://www.detox.design
Health and the environment have been my top interest since I was a teen. I went on to get my Masters of Public Health and having my first daughter led me to environmental health. I wanted to create a healthy and happy home for her. Raising my daughters in an environment with minimal toxins - that’s the crux of my “why”. I know deciphering the confusing marketplace of cleaners and everyday products isn’t always easy, but I’m here to help.My journey to a toxin-free home started with wanting to make the best choices for my family but also feeling overwhelmed and confused, and lacking the time to make detoxing our home a priority. Did you know packaging contains misleading messages? It’s true! I’ve immersed myself in product knowledge and safe ingredients, so you don’t have to.Today, there are toxins in the environment all around us. We do however have some control over what we choose to bring into our homes and put on our bodies. Hang out with me for awhile and together we’ll identify and remove the nasty products from your home leaving you with safer options and the knowledge you need to make toxin-free choices each time you shop, while saving money

Lisa is joined by Lara Goiten, MD a Harvard trained physician specializing in intensive care and lung medicine to talk about her book, The ICU Guide for Families: Understanding Intensive Care and How You Can Support Your Loved One.Somewhere between her residency in Boston and her fellowship in Seattle, she fell in love with the desert southwest and took a hard detour to work as a river guide in the Grand Canyon. She now lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico with her husband and two sons. There, she founded a clinician-directed quality improvement program at the Santa Fe hospital, and served as President-Elect of the Medical Staff. Her professional interests include quality improvement in healthcare, end-of-life care, the training of new doctors, physician burnout, and improving communication with patients and families. She is an editorial board member and frequent writer for the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine, and also writes in the lay press, including the New York Review of Books. As much as possible, she spends time with her family hiking, camping, and river rafting in her stunning backyard.
    Book description:
CU events are not uncommon but knowing what to do when a loved one is placed there is. This work explores the ICU with an eye toward guiding families to getting the best care for their beloved patient
Intensive care will touch almost all of us at some point – whether directly, or through our families and or friends. This book is for every family of patients in the ICU, who have suddenly entered an intimidating and alien world, in which they feel powerless and out of control. In simple, direct language, Lara Goitein, MD, gives clear explanations of all aspects of intensive care – what all those lines and tubes are; common conditions such as sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS); physical changes in patients and what they mean; common procedures and their risks and benefits; and the people and the culture of the ICU. One full section of the book is devoted to Covid-19-specific issues. In addition, the book provides concrete advice for how family members can be effective advocates on behalf of their loved ones –what to know before giving consent for procedures, how to interact with ICU staff, how to help the ICU team guard against common complications of ICU care, and how to approach important decisions about end-of-life care. Along the way, the author gently reminds of us of what, in the end, matters most in the ICU.For readers who may be distracted and exhausted, this is a clear, accessible guide with concrete recommendations for getting the best care and asking the right questions along the way. A compassionate resource in a time of extreme stress, this book offers support to anyone touched by an ICU stay.
