Lisa is joined by Marcus Bridgewater, aka Garden Marcus who talks about his book, How to Grow: Nurture Your Garden, Nurture YourselfMarcus Bridgewater, widely known as Garden Marcus, is an author, plant enthusiast, and CEO & Founder of Choice Forward. He began gardening when he bought his first house nearly seven years ago. After killing nine of his original 16 plants, he found himself determined to learn how to care for all living things. He now has around 500 plants at his Texas home. He developed his internet presence by connecting his observations in his garden to greater life lessons, and has been featured in the New York Times, Vogue, and the Los Angeles Times. When he is not in his garden, he is leading presentations, workshops, and seminars with Choice Forward. His first book, “How to Grow: Nurture Your Garden, Nurture Yourself,” (HarperOne, 2022) debuts May 24th.
    Book Description:
In this transformative guide, TikTok’s most popular gardener, Marcus Bridgewater—aka Garden Marcus—offers lessons for growth rooted in lessons from the plant world to help cultivate the soul.Marcus Bridgewater has been compared to Bob Ross and Mister Rogers for his soothing TikTok videos that relate botany to humanity. A gardener “who shares tips about caring for one’s plants and oneself” (New York Times) and “is not only a trove of information if you’re looking to flex your green thumb, but a balm for the pandemic-induced chaos happening in the world” (Vogue), his soothing observations on plants and life have made him a social media star. In caring for over 600 plants, Marcus has gained invaluable wisdom. Life inside us yearns to grow; like plants, humans maximize their potential when presented with the right conditions. Through care and attention, he reminds us, we can successfully cultivate growth. Centered on a trinity of wellbeing—Mental Health, Physical Fitness, and Spiritual Awareness, How to Grow weaves together insights from the garden with stories from Marcus’s life to help you foster personal development. With lessons rooted in his experiences gardening—from how a replanted flourishing sweet potato vine is a reminder that all living things benefit from a change of scene, to how to embrace patience to foster growth—this inspiring guide helps you do “the dirty work” (pun intended) to discover kindness, patience, and positivity within. “We cannot make anything grow,” he advises. “But we can foster an environment where it may grow.”How to Grow isn’t a gardening book. It is a self-help book that draws inspiration from the garden. Original, timely, and filled with nurturing wisdom, it takes perennial knowledge from plants to teach us about ourselves and opens our eyes to what we are capable of achieving.

Lisa is joined by Paul Conti, MD who talks about his book, Trauma: The Invisible Epidemic: How Trauma Works and How We Can Heal From It.Paul Conti, MD, is a graduate of Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed his psychiatry training at Stanford and at Harvard, where he was appointed chief resident. He then served on the medical faculty at Harvard before moving to Portland, Oregon, and founding a clinic. He specializes in complex assessment and problem-solving, as well as both health and performance optimization. For more info, https://www.pacificpremiergroup.comBook description:
A Journey Toward Understanding, Active Treatment, and Societal Prevention of Trauma
Imagine, if you will, a disease―one that has only subtle outward symptoms but can hijack your entire body without notice, one that transfers easily between parent and child, one that can last a lifetime if untreated. According to Dr. Paul Conti, this is exactly how society should conceptualize trauma: as an out-of-control epidemic with a potentially fatal prognosis.
In Trauma: The Invisible Epidemic, Dr. Conti examines the most recent research, clinical best practices, and dozens of real-life stories to present a deeper and more urgent view of trauma. Not only does Dr. Conti explain how trauma affects the body and mind, he also demonstrates that trauma is transmissible among close family and friends, as well as across generations and within vast demographic groups.
With all this in mind, Trauma: The Invisible Epidemic proposes a course of treatment for the seemingly untreatable. Here, Dr. Conti traces a step-by-step series of concrete changes that we can make both as individuals and as a society to alleviate trauma’s effects and prevent further traumatization in the future.
    You will discover:
    • The different post-trauma syndromes, how they are classified, and their common symptoms
    • An examination of how for-profit health care systems can inhibit diagnosis and treatment of trauma
    • How social crises and political turmoil encourage the spread of group trauma
    • Methods for confronting and managing your fears as they arise in the moment
    • How trauma disrupts mental processes such as memory, emotional regulation, and logical decision-making
    • The argument for a renewed humanist social commitment to mental health and wellness
It’s only when we understand how a disease spreads and is sustained that we are able to create its ultimate cure. With Trauma: The Invisible Epidemic, Dr. Conti reveals that what we once considered a lifelong, unbeatable mental illness is both treatable and preventable.

By embracing the practice of radical intimacy, I can confidently promise my readers a personal revolution of self-acceptance, appreciation, vitality, and confidence. And without fail, mind-blowing, soul-stirring, earth-shattering sex follows.”—Zoë Kors

Kors guides the reader on a five‑part journey through nine areas of opportunity for deepening intimacy with themselves, their partner, and their world, inviting them to embrace emotional, physical, and energetic self‑mastery, which is required to skillfully relate with others. At the conclusion of each part, there are a collection of experiential exercises which support the reader in embodying the concepts they’ve just read. From academia and science to mysticism and self-development, Kors delivers a rich and varied understanding of human sexuality and intimacy through the lens of the body, brain, heart, spirit, and culture.

EP #1091: BMI is BS plus Eating Disorders, Diet Culture, Fat Shaming, Self-Love & Self-Care May 26, 2022
    Show notes

Lisa is joined by Bethany Netsova who shares why the BMI is BS, the dangers of diet culture, fat phobia in the society at large and in the medical establishment, bullying both as a kid and as a fat woman trying to workout at numerous gyms, and her incredible TikTok page.
    In Bethany's own words:
I never intended to become a fat positive creator on TikTok, but through my own journey to radical self love and acceptance I realized I could love and supports others in similar bodies and journeys. Growing up fat, I never felt like I was allowed to love myself. It wasn’t until I had a kid of my own that I realized if I wanted them to feel comfortable in their own skin and love themselves regardless of what the world tells them, they needed to see that in action and it had to start with me. My TikTok videos features stories from my past of growing up fat, experiences at the gym, and current issues that I still experience as a fat person. My hope is that others can see themselves in my stories and know they aren’t alone, while educating those who haven’t experienced fat phobia and show them what it’s like to be a fat person living in today’s society. Allison joins Lisa to talk about her book, OVERTHINKING ABOUT YOU: NAVIGATING ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS WHEN YOU HAVE ANXIETY, OCD, AND/OR DEPRESSION.There are countless books on dating and many books on how to cope with mental illness. Raskin seamlessly weaves her own mental health and dating journey with a wealth of advice from clinical psychologists, a psychiatrist, relationship experts, and real-life couples. The result? A useful, laugh-out-loud blend of memoir and self-help that gives readers tangible tips on navigating dating and romance while supporting their own mental health.
Featuring lessons learned from Raskin’s own love life and interviews with top health experts, Raskin’s nonfiction debut - [Workman Publishing; on sale May 3, 2022; $16.95] - explores the complex intersection of romance and mental health. The hope is that, similar to Raskin, readers will walk away from this book feeling less alone in the struggle and better prepared to tackle dating and relationships with more confidence and less worry.
