    Purchasing Truth

Truth in Politics. Is it even possible to discuss truth in a safe way in a polarized United States? It is hard to imagine a safe conversation with your friends, co-workers, and family discussing the nation’s biggest issues. What it would be like to listen to and watch political discussions without the current reactivity, meltdown, or withdrawal? By listening in on the Purchasing Truth podcast with host Bill Stierle and moderator Tom, you will experience a discussion on why the restoration of the conversation about truth with perspective leads to a productive conversation in a partisan nation. This podcast will address the use of language by our leaders and in the news that has been dividing us, distracting us, splitting us, and keeping us from the unity we desire. An image of Norman Rockwell’s Thanksgiving in a distant American past reflects an American ideal captured in the little girl’s face as she experiences family members leaning in for connection that welcomes and accepts diverse opinions. At that time, people held vibrant conversations that reinforced unity without the discourse breaking the family apart. Today, America is very different. Freedom of speech and the technology age has brought a diversity of expression and access to instant information. Regrettably, it has also allowed for the expansion and amplification of marginal versions of truth and unverified opinions. With so many voices pulling for our attention, how can we accurately assess the reality or danger of all the things we hear? This results in issues being used to create enemy images of each other and keep us in a state of disconnection that generates fear and anger. Each side is looking for a mistake or angle to exploit and sow dissent. Political truth is lost as identity politics and limited beliefs about party objectives are marginalized. Having safe conversations about our versions of truth has been lost. Truth is not absolute. It changes and evolves when we search for and learn new things. The good news is we can have a better, safer discussion about what’s leaning towards false, partial-truth, or a full version of the truth and develop the ability to separate them from each other. In a world where the media is controlling the narrative, it’s more important than ever to dissect the messages that are shoved in our faces on a daily basis. Together, Bill and Tom sift through the information and data that is available, providing clarity and guidance, and return to a place where honesty and integrity mean something. Bill Stierle is a thought leader in the integration of emotional intelligence and brain research. With over 27 years of speaking, training and executive consulting expertise, Bill’s content and contributions are being felt daily inside the world’s top business schools, Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and government institutions. His extensive knowledge in communication and human development provides fresh insight on motivation, conflict reduction, professional productivity, organizational performance, and individual effectiveness. His thought-provoking, dynamic trainings provide content-rich, practical information that leaves a lasting impact on his audiences. Join Bill and Tom as they lead you to explore and engage truth in a different way. Discover language strategies, concepts, and skills that will move you closer to the truth as they tackle politics, leadership, health care, business, and many other areas that affect us all. Don’t just accept whatever information comes your way. Learn how to approach and process it from different angles and protect yourself against the truth being hijacked. In a world of uncertainty, massive cable, network, social media, and leadership propaganda, Purchasing Truth is a place where messages and motivations become clear. Make sure your truth can’t be purchased. Join us.

Truth And Communication Traps Jun 19, 2020
    Show notes

One of the main reasons why Donald Trump gets to purchase the truth from the people is because of the failure of journalists to have a productive and meaningful discourse with him every time he goes to the podium. A lot of times, they walk straight into communication traps that get in the way of the truth. It takes certain skills to be able to communicate effectively with the president – skills which the journalists at the Press Corps do not seem to possess. Bill Stierle and Tom take on the most common traps that journalists fall into when trying to get the truth out of the president, the press secretary or anyone from the administration. Join in this in-depth discussion and listen as they suggest some ways journalists can get around these traps and really get to the truth.

Truth And The Media Photo Op Jun 16, 2020
    Show notes

Donald Trump’s now-viral Bible-holding photo is generally deemed as an extremely offensive political stunt, but there was nothing new about it. Whether from the perspective of the Christian community or the leaders whose careers were being hijacked by their mere presence in the photo, the stunt was a classic case of Trump borrowing respect and credibility from others to justify something he is about to do. Bill Stierle and Tom analyze Donald Trump’s photo op in front of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington, DC with a Bible in his hand. The church was damaged when a fire broke out as protests against racism and police brutality raged in the city and across the nation. Bill and Tom talk about how Trump used the photo op as an opportunity to gain respect and credibility as he makes controversial moves around the issue of protest dispersal.

    Show notes

The violence brought about by this lack of empathy, even among the most common of people, is terrifying, and is why the people are furious. Bill Stierle and Tom dive into the lack of empathy in the world right now, and its violent consequences. Truth is ultimately obscured by lack of empathy. Tune in to this important discussion.

Truth And Brand America Part 2 Jun 09, 2020
    Show notes

Branding plays a huge part in how truth is perceived and purchased. In Brand America, the way truth is distributed is dependent on loud, attention-grabbing, clickbait headlines that ultimately warp the information contained within. Bill Stierle and Tom continue their deep dive into truth in Brand America. They go into social media—the internet as a whole, for that matter—and its importance in the way truth circulates and is consumed.

The Truth and Brand America – Part 1 Jun 05, 2020
    Show notes

Now, more than ever, Brand America should be built around respectful communication based on information and facts, instead of the name-calling and vicious labeling that dominates the political sphere nowadays. Nowhere is this respectful communication to be found in Ann Coulter’s Twitter rants in response to Donald Trump’s Memorial Day weekend tweet calling for Alabama voters to support Tommy Tuberville instead of Jeff Sessions. She might be on point, but her vicious language certainly does not help her message. In this episode, Bill Stierle and Tom dissect Ann’s name-calling and explain why this kind of communication does more harm than good to the Republican brand and the American brand, for that matter. There is a need to restore Brand America, and a lot of that should come from having civil conversations and respectful communication.

Purchasing Truth In The Time Of Trump And Hydroxychloroquine Jun 02, 2020
    Show notes

As the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump wields a lot of power, and with that power, he has hijacked truth and the use of language. With his touting of hydroxychloroquine as some sort of miracle drug to fight COVID-19, President Trump has set a potentially lethal precedent when it comes to pursuing truth. Bill Stierle and Tom discuss the repercussions of President Donald Trump’s statement on hydroxychloroquine on the truth of the COVID-19 pandemic. The power to arbitrate and declare truths on a stage as public as the President’s is a great responsibility so it is essential for the people to remain vigilant and watchful.

Truth And The Political Mind May 29, 2020
    Show notes

As the presidential election is fast approaching, many of the more conscientious Republicans are jumping on the Lincoln Project bandwagon. The project aims to convince voters that Donald Trump does not represent the Republican vision for the country. However, as Bill Stierle and Tom point out how their messaging may not be very effective in swaying the most loyal of Trump’s followers. In fact, some of it may just feed into Trump’s campaign narrative and strengthen the confirmation bias of the loyalists. Bill and Tom see the need for the Lincoln Project to utilize a strategy of empathy and contrast to get past the barriers in the loyalist mind, unleash the truth, and let the political mind do its work of making a difference.

Carrying The Truth As A Public Servant May 19, 2020
    Show notes

As citizens, we have our own sets of expectations for public servants, and what they should do, what they should give the people. One of the critical expectations shared by many—if not all—is a deference to the truth grounded in the position of authority and access granted to public servants. Bill Stierle and Tom sit down to talk about the complicated relationship between public servants and the truth. Just like most things, this truth—or at least shards or versions of the truth—is part of a larger narrative that these public servants embody. Bill and Tom’s lively discussion about the nature of truth in the field of public service will surely have you rethinking the words that escape our leaders’ lips, so don’t miss it.
