    Purchasing Truth

Truth in Politics. Is it even possible to discuss truth in a safe way in a polarized United States? It is hard to imagine a safe conversation with your friends, co-workers, and family discussing the nation’s biggest issues. What it would be like to listen to and watch political discussions without the current reactivity, meltdown, or withdrawal? By listening in on the Purchasing Truth podcast with host Bill Stierle and moderator Tom, you will experience a discussion on why the restoration of the conversation about truth with perspective leads to a productive conversation in a partisan nation. This podcast will address the use of language by our leaders and in the news that has been dividing us, distracting us, splitting us, and keeping us from the unity we desire. An image of Norman Rockwell’s Thanksgiving in a distant American past reflects an American ideal captured in the little girl’s face as she experiences family members leaning in for connection that welcomes and accepts diverse opinions. At that time, people held vibrant conversations that reinforced unity without the discourse breaking the family apart. Today, America is very different. Freedom of speech and the technology age has brought a diversity of expression and access to instant information. Regrettably, it has also allowed for the expansion and amplification of marginal versions of truth and unverified opinions. With so many voices pulling for our attention, how can we accurately assess the reality or danger of all the things we hear? This results in issues being used to create enemy images of each other and keep us in a state of disconnection that generates fear and anger. Each side is looking for a mistake or angle to exploit and sow dissent. Political truth is lost as identity politics and limited beliefs about party objectives are marginalized. Having safe conversations about our versions of truth has been lost. Truth is not absolute. It changes and evolves when we search for and learn new things. The good news is we can have a better, safer discussion about what’s leaning towards false, partial-truth, or a full version of the truth and develop the ability to separate them from each other. In a world where the media is controlling the narrative, it’s more important than ever to dissect the messages that are shoved in our faces on a daily basis. Together, Bill and Tom sift through the information and data that is available, providing clarity and guidance, and return to a place where honesty and integrity mean something. Bill Stierle is a thought leader in the integration of emotional intelligence and brain research. With over 27 years of speaking, training and executive consulting expertise, Bill’s content and contributions are being felt daily inside the world’s top business schools, Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and government institutions. His extensive knowledge in communication and human development provides fresh insight on motivation, conflict reduction, professional productivity, organizational performance, and individual effectiveness. His thought-provoking, dynamic trainings provide content-rich, practical information that leaves a lasting impact on his audiences. Join Bill and Tom as they lead you to explore and engage truth in a different way. Discover language strategies, concepts, and skills that will move you closer to the truth as they tackle politics, leadership, health care, business, and many other areas that affect us all. Don’t just accept whatever information comes your way. Learn how to approach and process it from different angles and protect yourself against the truth being hijacked. In a world of uncertainty, massive cable, network, social media, and leadership propaganda, Purchasing Truth is a place where messages and motivations become clear. Make sure your truth can’t be purchased. Join us.

Truth And The Death Of Curiosity Aug 28, 2020
    Show notes

Claiming something is true can potentially lead to the death of curiosity. For some people, it can be easy to jump from hearing a claim—especially from someone of power—to believing it as the truth, without taking the time to check. In this episode, Bill Stierle and Tom talk about truth and curiosity and how they go hand in hand, particularly in the world of politics and social media. In contrast, being curious is what actually allows us to find the truth. The hosts talk about the importance of having curiosity now, more than ever, as we get bombarded with so much information in our day-to-day lives. Follow Bill and Tom in this conversation as they explore the topic in relation to the Vice Presidential nominee, Kamala Harris, news media outlets, conspiracy theories, and more.

The Kamala Harris Candidacy And The Truth About American Identity Aug 25, 2020
    Show notes

Joe Biden’s announcement that Senator Kamala Harris will be his running mate for the 2020 election has stolen the news cycle for several days, much to the consternation of Donald Trump’s camp. This is not going away any sooner, either, as this candidacy presses on the throbbing sore of racial relations in America. Bill Stierle and Tom discuss how Kamala’s candidacy pits the Trump supporter’s idea of “American identity” with the reality of racial diversity in contemporary America. They also talk about how Biden and Kamala presented themselves during their debut and what they could have done better to deliver their message across more effectively. This is going to be an interesting election year that will once more put into the spotlight the difficult questions that Americans would rather dodge. This debut is a start.

Truth And The Potemkin Village Aug 21, 2020
    Show notes

A “Potemkin village” signifies any deceptive or false construct, conjured often by cruel regimes, to deceive both those within the land and those peering in from outside. Scarily familiar? We may be experiencing this in America right now, especially with the way truth is being purchased. In this episode, Bill Stierle and Tom dive deep into the stark similarities between how we are doing now and the Potemkin village. They then talk further about how the media is creating a Potemkin village for Donald Trump on a daily basis, especially now with the pandemic.

Truth And Police Perspective: The Aurora, Colorado Racial Profiling Incident Aug 18, 2020
    Show notes

From the police’s perspective, police rules, protocols and procedures are there so that the need for safety and protection of police officers and the need to respect the rights of the community are both ensured. What happens when there is a clash between the supposed need for safety and protection and the right to freedom and presumption of innocence? Bill Stierle and Tom take the recent incident of racial profiling in Aurora, Colorado as an example of how tricky this question can become. Up to what point should rules and procedures be followed strictly? Does the need for safety and protection justify the clear violation of the apprehended persons’ rights? What changes can be done to train police officers to respond to these situations better? These are difficult but necessary questions to tackle as America’s police find itself once more in the spotlight.

Truth And The Road To Tyranny Part 2 Aug 14, 2020
    Show notes

When the government starts to pit freedom and security at each other as if they’re incompatible, you could easily be on the road to tyranny. Bill Stierle and Tom follow up on last episode’s conversation about tyranny and professional ethics, focusing on the issues surrounding Bill Barr’s appearance in front of the House Judiciary Committee to face questions on the Trump administration’s use of force to disperse protests. How do Barr and the Trump administration use sound bites to mislead the public from the real issue? How can such misdirection be counteracted? These are important things that Americans need to understand if they are to stay free of tyrannical rule.

Truth And The Road To Tyranny Aug 11, 2020
    Show notes

Would you know it if you were headed down the road to tyranny? If we take a look the many examples in the 20th century, then the answer would probably be no. As a matter of fact, people under tyranny rarely remember the last time they took a meaningful vote before they were taken over by it. Bill Stierle and Tom share their thoughts on the book, On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder and how it relates to recent events in America. Do the American people truly understand tyranny? Are they unwittingly clearing the path for it to dominate? Are they already under some form of it? You be the judge.

Truth, Expertise And The Tenets Of Trust Aug 07, 2020
    Show notes

One of the most insidious things people can do with power is the ability to use “expert” authority to sway the masses to their version of the truth. This is certainly the case with the viral video of doctors in lab coats talking about Coronavirus and making claims that there is a cure for it and that there is no need to wear masks – contrary to what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other experts are saying. The video quickly became viral hours after release and Donald Trump even shared several versions of it on Twitter. The video was taken down from every major platform for spreading misinformation – to the consternation of some people, specifically Trump’s hardline supporters. Why were these “experts’” opinions squashed? Why was their “expertise” repressed? Bill Stierle and Tom anchor this episode’s discussion on this burning issue.

Getting More Truth By Being Specific Aug 04, 2020
    Show notes

As you may have known by now, there are so many ways that truth can be purchased in our daily lives. Most especially by people in power positions, the truth can easily be made to work for what they need and want others to believe. In this episode, Bill Stierle and Tom talk about how that is being done in Portland, Oregon. They also tap into the role of the media and even the President in creating fear, in being reactive rather than proactive. Standing out from this discussion is the importance of making truth in honesty range by making it specific. Bill and Tom dive in further and explain why this is so.

    Show notes

Little do we realize it, but our beliefs have the power to purchase truth from us. No matter what others say, if we are already bought into what we believe, it can be very difficult to see anything else. In this episode, Bill Stierle and Tom talk about how our beliefs shape the truth, especially in the context of the current situation of our children’s education. The on-going talks of school reopening have undeniably brought to the surface differing views about wearing masks, social distancing, and overall safety in this COVID-19 world.
