    Purchasing Truth

Truth in Politics. Is it even possible to discuss truth in a safe way in a polarized United States? It is hard to imagine a safe conversation with your friends, co-workers, and family discussing the nation’s biggest issues. What it would be like to listen to and watch political discussions without the current reactivity, meltdown, or withdrawal? By listening in on the Purchasing Truth podcast with host Bill Stierle and moderator Tom, you will experience a discussion on why the restoration of the conversation about truth with perspective leads to a productive conversation in a partisan nation. This podcast will address the use of language by our leaders and in the news that has been dividing us, distracting us, splitting us, and keeping us from the unity we desire. An image of Norman Rockwell’s Thanksgiving in a distant American past reflects an American ideal captured in the little girl’s face as she experiences family members leaning in for connection that welcomes and accepts diverse opinions. At that time, people held vibrant conversations that reinforced unity without the discourse breaking the family apart. Today, America is very different. Freedom of speech and the technology age has brought a diversity of expression and access to instant information. Regrettably, it has also allowed for the expansion and amplification of marginal versions of truth and unverified opinions. With so many voices pulling for our attention, how can we accurately assess the reality or danger of all the things we hear? This results in issues being used to create enemy images of each other and keep us in a state of disconnection that generates fear and anger. Each side is looking for a mistake or angle to exploit and sow dissent. Political truth is lost as identity politics and limited beliefs about party objectives are marginalized. Having safe conversations about our versions of truth has been lost. Truth is not absolute. It changes and evolves when we search for and learn new things. The good news is we can have a better, safer discussion about what’s leaning towards false, partial-truth, or a full version of the truth and develop the ability to separate them from each other. In a world where the media is controlling the narrative, it’s more important than ever to dissect the messages that are shoved in our faces on a daily basis. Together, Bill and Tom sift through the information and data that is available, providing clarity and guidance, and return to a place where honesty and integrity mean something. Bill Stierle is a thought leader in the integration of emotional intelligence and brain research. With over 27 years of speaking, training and executive consulting expertise, Bill’s content and contributions are being felt daily inside the world’s top business schools, Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and government institutions. His extensive knowledge in communication and human development provides fresh insight on motivation, conflict reduction, professional productivity, organizational performance, and individual effectiveness. Join Bill and Tom as they lead you to explore and engage truth in a different way. Discover language strategies, concepts, and skills that will move you closer to the truth as they tackle politics, leadership, health care, business, and many other areas that affect us all. Don’t just accept whatever information comes your way. Learn how to approach and process it from different angles and protect yourself against the truth being hijacked. In a world of uncertainty, massive cable, network, social media, and leadership propaganda, Purchasing Truth is a place where messages and motivations become clear. Make sure your truth can’t be purchased. Join us.

Truth And The Emotion Of Shock – Don’t Take The Bait May 15, 2020
    Show notes

A lot of Americans were overwhelmed with the emotion of shock when Donald Trump suggested injecting disinfectant to protect the body from coronavirus. Though a striking example, it is not the first time the president used shock, albeit unwittingly, at the podium. Bill Stierle and Tom encourage us not to take the bait. The president floats marketing ideas, even though those ideas may not necessarily be the truth. So hijacked are the Americans’ emotions that Bill and Tom see a future wherein the next president will be faced with the challenge of regaining trust in the office as a public servant.

Truth And The Purpose Of A Flip Flop May 12, 2020
    Show notes

We recently see President Donald Trump vacillate on the issue of whether the states should open up their economies as the nation continues to fight against the coronavirus pandemic. A flip flop is not a politician’s best friend as it can cause constituents to question their integrity. Yet the president seems to be doing it now as he tries to take total authority at first and then avoids accountability the next day. Was the recent controversial flip flop intentional or not? If so, what was the purpose behind it? Bill Stierle and Tom attempt to answer these questions and arrive at the conclusion that the flip flop is just another marketing strategy designed to meet Trump’s need for acknowledgment. The show must go on, apparently, and the flip flop is just there to make sure the viewers stay on after the commercial break.

Building Certainty And Trust Through Impactful Journalism May 08, 2020
    Show notes

Information is much sought in times like the coronavirus pandemic to have them come to terms with the truth of the situation. Impactful journalism means being able to draw useful information from people like Donald Trump and Mike Pence as opposed to just allowing them to project themselves in a self-serving monologue. It means depriving them of their pet talking points and cutting to the chase. That is, being in control of the show, interview, or press conference and making the truth come out. Bill Stierle and Tom encourage journalists to develop these skills to change the nature of their engagements with the country’s top politicians and be able to give the people the certainty and trust that they need to feel in this situation.

The Strength Of Collaboration: Hijacking The Truth From The President May 05, 2020
    Show notes

Millions of Americans tune in daily to Donald Trump’s coronavirus briefings expecting to hear much-needed information on the virus and the lockdown, only to be bombarded with the usual “me” narrative of how he is in charge of the situation. There is no collaborative experience in these briefings, and yet collaboration is the very thing we need the most as we go through this crisis. In this episode, Bill Stierle and Tom berate how Trump turns his briefings into cheerleading sessions devoid of substance that is actually of value to the viewing public. Clearly, it is time to hijack the truth from the president. Journalists need to get inside Trump’s “me” narrative and use it to segue into the “we” narrative to change the nature of the coronavirus briefings into something the American people can benefit from.

The Corona Virus Flat Earth Mindset, Part 2 Apr 14, 2020
    Show notes

The flat earth mindset is a mindset that, more often than not, ends up being a huge liability to the truth. Especially in the time of COVID-19 and coronavirus, it’s important that the truth be out there, and with a flat earth mindset, the truth gets scrambled. Bill Stierle and Tom discuss the relationship of a flat earth mindset to the ways we perceive and combat the spread of COVID-19, specifically the detriments. A lot of this has to do with the messages that we pick up around us in our daily lives, so especially in a time of crisis, we must exercise constant vigilance.
