It might be simple, but that doesn't mean it's easy. Sometimes leaders fall into the trap of sophistication bias and buy into the idea that complexity conveys importance. But impact-driven leaders should never underestimate the value of simplicity. So today, we're keeping it simple and discussing two leadership essentials: VISION and EXECUTION.

VISION and EXECUTION are essential for you to invest in a path for growth that is healthy, life-giving, and sustainable. In the presence of these two things, we build the foundation for us to grow. In the absence of these two things, chaos will result.

    1. A clear vision for where you are going

    • Most people don't get what they want because most people never take the time to define what they want
    • “When you become successful, distractions often show up on your doorstep, masquerading as opportunities.” - Michael Hyatt
    • “There is a psychological, neurological, theological, and biological justification for the necessity of aim.” - Jordan Peterson

    2. A plan for consistently executing on the things that matter most over an extended time

    • Consistent: Creating habits, systems, and routines that occur daily, monthly, and quarterly to keep you on track.
    • Execute: Focus more on application than information. What are you doing to move the ball forward?
    • Things that matter most: When you narrow your vision, you clarify your strategy.

Our whole team is rooting for you. We want to see you win!

Remember, my strength is not for me; your strength is not for you; our strength is for service.

Hero’s are approval-seeking, achievement-oriented, people pleasers. A hero lets their significance come at the expense of others' growth and chases perfection. A leader takes the role of the servant and chases excellence. Dr. Chip Dodd’s mission in life is to help people see who they’re made to be so they can do what they’re made to do; in this episode, he shares:

    • Why we should stop being a hero and start leading
    • Why we should chase excellence instead of perfection
    • And how to know when we’re falling into the trap of playing the hero

Top five pitfalls of playing the hero:

    1. Work becomes confused with worth.
    2. Performance begins to be valued more than presence.
    3. To be an example to others, the true self is isolated.
    4. Secrets sap the leader’s passion and purpose.
    5. People become things.

Our whole team is rooting for you. We want to see you win!

At its core, developmental delegation is rooted in 3 fundamental beliefs:

    1. Leadership is a skill.
    2. Action precedes insight.
    3. Decentralization is a worthy goal.

The effectiveness of your leadership is not measured by the number of followers you have but by the number of leaders you develop.

As an impact-driven leader, you must be willing to sacrifice short term efficiency for long-term effectiveness. Developing leaders take a lot longer than creating followers. If you are creating followers, then by nature, you become the bottleneck in your organization.

Bryan Miles is a successful entrepreneur, husband, father, backpacker, mountain climber, mentor, and writer. In addition, he’s the Co-Chair and Co-Founder of BELAY. He and his wife, Shannon, are proud Co-Owners. Bootstrapping their business with no outside funding, the company has generated over $100M in revenues since its beginning and has exploded to over one thousand team members – all of whom work from home. Without an office, BELAY has graced the Inc. 5000 list six times and was awarded the number one spot in Entrepreneur Magazine’s Best Company Culture and been featured in several top-tier media outlets over the years.

Additionally, outside of BELAY, Bryan & Shannon own a craft brewing company (NoFo Brew Co) and they own an advisory company that helps successful business owners own their companies, not run them (Own Not Run).

This week Bryan joins Alex in a conversation that revolves around the idea that ego creates followers, but stewardship creates leaders. If you want to grow, you have to learn to trust others enough to delegate responsibility, if you want to start owning your business, you need start doing the things that only you can do.

Defining the theme for your year is the practice we're focusing on in today's content episode.

Impact-driven leaders are intentional; they are not passive and reactive. So we're jumping into 2021 with intentionality and focus. We're going to define a specific word to characterize the year and use it as a filter for our brain to categorize the things we are learning and areas we are growing in.

Here are some actional steps for today's content:

    1. Set a deadline
    2. Root your word in something meaningful
    3. Choose a word that makes you excited and uncomfortable
    4. Find people to hold you accountable
    5. Align your habits with your word
    6. Focus on your theme

on 01/04/20 1:00-2:30 PM CST, we're hosting a free Personal Path For Growth Workshop to help walk you through a 5 step process on building habits and a vision plan that supports your word. If you are interested in joining, please send an email to Layne@pathforgrowth.com
