148: Is It Okay to Meal Plan and Food Prep as an Intuitive Eater? Feb 11, 2020
    Show notes

There are so many misconceptions about intuitive eating, one of the biggest ones is that it's anti-health and you cannot care about nutrition, health and wellness. The reasons, however, that health and wellness is pursued as an intuitive eater is very different than the diet culture infused versions of health and wellness.

So can you practice meal planning and food prepping as an intuitive eater?

    Absolutely!

Important distinction: make sure you are in a healthy place with it first, though. If you are using it to control your food, it would be important to take a break until you can come back to it in a more fluid, healthy way. Think of it like the exercise conversation, just because we ask at times for exercise breaks, for example pausing on exercise until you get your period back if its missing, that doesn't mean its a forever thing. Just like exercise too, meal planning and food prepping should enhance your life, bring joy or reduce stress, it shouldn't be about controlling your body, controlling your food or exercise, forcing yourself to do anything. Remember: if not doing a health or wellness habit causes internal stress or anxiety or worry, that's how you know it's something to reflect on the why behind it.

I also think it's critical to be flexible with it, as well as know it's not for everyone, too. Some people will love it and find it so helpful, and do it all the time. Where other intuitive eaters won't enjoy or find it helpful at all, and that's 100% okay too. Intuitive Eating is all about individuality and doing what is best for you.

Here are some Intuitive Eating aligned reasons to meal plan and food prep:

    • Saves time, you cook once and eat many times. And save time not having to battle over what's for dinner nightly.
    • Saves money from eating out or getting take out.
    • Aligns with your values, like eating as a family..
    • Reduces stress on mental decision fatigue
    • Gives you more space to do other things that bring you joy (I always look for recipes that are under thirty minutes to cook).
    • Encourages you to try new foods and recipes.
    • Challenges you to try new foods and recipes.
    • Environmental factors, reducing waste (eating more at home and also less plastic wrapped items).

147: How to Go From Hating Your Body to Accepting It with Alissa Rumsey RD/N Feb 07, 2020
    Show notes

A few episodes ago (in episode 144 on allowing yourself to grieve your here and now body) we discussed one of the first, critical stages of body acceptance. You have to grieve your here and now body and understand how your body image is so directly tied to your self worth and self esteem. Yet, how do you go from hating your body to then accepting it?

Today's podcast episode explores how to move from hating your body and grieving it, to then feel tolerant and neutral towards it and work towards body (and more importantly, self) acceptance. Our guest on today's show, Alissa Rumsey, is one of my favorite non-diet dietitians in the intuitive eating space and she's amazing at chatting about body image work. In this episode, you'll get tangible tips for how to work to accept your body (in time!) and we also discuss in detail what it actually means to develop and have a healthy body image.

In this episode we discuss in detail:

    • Alissa's journey to becoming a non-diet dietitian and making the shift in her career to educating and counseling through an intuitive eating and health at every size lens
    • Her advice for RDs-to-be and anyone out there building an online health and nutrition business
    • The importance of SEO, strategy and intention for your website and your business
    • Navigating body acceptance, how to move from body grief and hating your body to acceptance
    • Where body image work comes in at during the intuitive eating journey
    • What body respect means and how to practice it
    • Making peace with potential weight gain in the intuitive eating journey
    • What does a healthy body image look like and Alissa's #1 piece of advice for developing it
    • Alissa's current favorite tools for practicing wellness without obsession

    More on Alissa:

Alissa Rumsey MS, RD, CDN, CSCS is a New York City-based registered dietitian and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor who is passionate about empowering women to reclaim the space to eat and live unapologetically. She is the founder of Alissa Rumsey Nutrition and Wellness, a weight-inclusive private practice that specializes in intuitive eating, body acceptance and disordered eating recovery. Her philosophy is rooted in the anti-diet and Health at Every Size (HAES®) framework, as she believes true health comes from nurturing behaviors to enhance physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Through her virtual one-on-one coaching and online programs, she helps people break the dieting cycle and cultivate a healthy and peaceful relationship with food and their bodies.

Alissa's expertise is regularly featured on television, online, and in print. She is a monthly contributor to US News and World Report and has appeared in over 100 media outlets including NBC Nightly News, CNN, SELF and Women's Health. While I have a love affair with many of their products, don't even get me started on the crunchy chocolate chip cookies, today I want to share with you my newest obsession: the soft baked almond flour bars.

While these bars are delicious on their own, I love to personally eat them as part of my afternoon snack with slices of cheese and apple. I also think they taste great on top of smoothies, oatmeal and yogurt. I've been throwing these in my diaper bags and purse lately too so I always have a snack on hand when I'm out and about with Maddy and need something!

If you want to see me taste testing these delicious bars and talking about them more, head over to my IGTV channel today where I am sharing a video on these bars in partnership with Simple Mills.

This episode is a super special one. I invite my past client, Maddy, on the show to share her personal journey to freedom in food and life. In this episode, Maddy shares her relationship with food growing up, when being the "healthy one" became her identity, realizing she had a problem- orthorexia, and seeking help to recover with a therapist and working with me at Nourishing Minds Nutrition.

Maddy shares what it was like to heal her disordered eating and get her period back, where she is at now and some amazing takeaways she has from her personal journey.

Maddy is a wonderful example of someone who was dedicated to her healing and becoming an intuitive eater, and recognizing when it was time to ask for assistance in that process. Value based living means you are living your life according to what is important to you. How you believe you should live your life, not what others expect, or want of you.
