This episode is brought to you by New Chapter. As a women's health dietitian and educator, I have been on the search for my official recommendation for a prenatal vitamin for quite some time, and I am thrilled to say I finally found the one, and actually a prenatal AND postnatal vitamin- that checks all my boxes.

What's so cool about New Chapter's perfect prenatal vitamin is that it is fermented for better absorption with beneficial probiotics and whole foods, which also makes it easy to digest and gentle on the stomach- which if you've ever taken a prenatal vitamin you know that's not always the case. Plus their new improved formula contains ginger to help combat morning sickness. It contains all the key nutrients your body needs for a growing baby, including methylfolate- which is the active form of folate I personally always recommend to my clients when they are looking for a prenatal.

And they also have a Perfect postnatal vitamin, which is what I am personally taking now. Its formulated specifically for new moms and our needs, to help us replenish nutrient stores from having a baby meaning its going to contain key nutrients like iodine, vitamin D, fermented iron as well as fermented B vitamins to support energy needs. What I think is so helpful is that it also contains herbs and plants that have been used traditionally for lactation like oats, kelp, chamomile and turmeric.

As with all New Chapter supplements and products, these prenatal and postnatal vitamins are nonGMO certified, made with organic whole foods and herbs and responsibly sourced. I mean I could it get any better, I don't think so!

You can purchase New Chapter prenatal and postnatal vitamins on New Chapter's website, Whole Foods, CVS, Amazon and local health food stores. Thank you so much for sponsoring today's episode NC!

159: Q&A on Eating, Exercise and Anxiety During the COVID-19 Pandemic Mar 24, 2020
    Show notes

I am pausing another week on the content I had planned out to more specifically address what is going on right now with the COVID-10 Pandemic. Many of you have told me that this quick change in routine, the lack of unknown, these out of control times are bringing on a lot of food, exercise and anxiety challenges. I am going to answer questions I received from Instagram to help you with this.

These answers are catered towards the anxious mind and disordered patterns popping up as a way to cope. I do want to acknowledge some listening with actually be experiencing food insecurity because of loss of job, etc and that would of course add to the scarcity mindset around food. If you have been affected by a job loss and are food insecure, please let us know so we can spread the word to support our community.

Questions answered in today's podcast episode:

    Question:

I am finding that i"m struggling with taking a "rest day" from working out and getting close to my normal amount of steps. I usually workout 5-6 days in the gym but am now doing at home live workouts and I just don't want to take a "rest day". I think partially because i like the group fitness online but also because i'm afraid of losing strength/gaining weight.

    Question:

How do you deal with exercise addiction in a time like this? I was so active at school, and being more sedentary messes with my head and makes me anxious. It makes me want to restrict, but I'm continuing to eat enough because my body needs to eat! I wanted to ask this because I know I'm not the only one.

    Question:

I'd love if you could talk how to challenge the scarcity mindset when there is so much scarcity of food at the stores. Definitely triggering my ED thoughts!

    Question:

Would love for you to explain on anxiety! Feels like my chest is clenched up so tight and I have trouble concentrating on anything even when watching TV, without feeling anxious.

158: The Power of Healing Trauma Through Breathwork and Meditation with Victoria Albina NP, MPH Mar 20, 2020
    Show notes

Sending so much love to all of you affected by the Coronavirus Crisis. To help with keeping things normal in your daily routines, to give you things to do during this extra time we have and most importantly- tools to help with the anxiety of these uncertain times, I wanted to share today's episode with you. One of probably the most important conversations we have had on the show, in today's episode we explore how trauma shows up in our lives and in our bodies, and how to use healing modalities such as breathwork and meditation to help heal. Today's guest on the show, Victoria Albina, will blow you away with her likeability yet nerdy, research driven vibes.

Victoria Albina, NP, MPH is a Certified Life Coach, Certified Breathwork Journey Meditation Facilitator and Holistic Nurse Practitioner who is on a mission to help women raised by alcoholics and codependents to heal their relationship with themselves: mind, body and spirit so they can live confident, healthy lives free from anxiety, stress and overwhelm.

As a Feminist Confidence Coach and host of the Feminist Wellness Podcast, Victoria teaches women how to live with confidence and radical, unapologetic self-love. With 20 years in health & wellness, Victoria brings cognitive psychology, somatic healing, neuroscience and feminist theory to her work, providing both a unique framework for understanding the effects of the patriarchy and capitalism on women's mental and physical health, and an effective yet simple protocol for rewriting harmful old thought patterns to release anxiety and insecurity and to feel confident instead.

A former primary care provider and Functional Medicine expert, Victoria came to understand that the deepest root-cause healing work her patients were seeking was not found in lab work, supplements, prescriptions and restrictive nutrition plans. While all of that is an important part of the healing process, sustainable, long-lasting healing comes when we attend to mind, body and spirit, by healing our nervous systems and learning to manage the thought-patterns that keep us stuck and sick. By learning to look at our childhood wounds, our adult thought patterns, our somatic experience of challenging emotions and our energetics, Victoria guides women to a deeper place of health and healing – healing that lasts a lifetime.

    In this episode we discuss:

    • Victoria's journey to becoming a certified life coach, certified breathwork journey meditation facilitator and holistic nurse practitioner.
    • How trauma impacts our health and wellness and how it shows up physically and mentally
    • How microtraumas still impact your health
    • How to heal trauma so that you can heal your health issues
    • The scientific benefits to breathwork and meditation

157: Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos Mar 17, 2020
    Show notes

I had planned a different episode for today, but when I tried to record it just didn't feel right. I instead wanted to speak to what's going on with the Coronavirus epidemic. Over the past week so much has shifted and changed in the US. I am sure I am not the only person out there who went from informed yet not worried to informed and started to feel like there is a brick on my chest at all times.

The purpose of today's episode is to not educate or tell you anything you don't already know (distance yourself, wash your hands and let's listen to the scientists, not quack advice okay?). The purpose of today's episode is to check in on you and send a compassionate reminder to all of this that it serves each and every one of us to stay calm in the midst of chaos.

Your feelings and emotions are 100% valid and I know many of us, myself included, are starting to feel the anxiety pick up. But the best thing we can do in hard times like this, is take care of mental health and take care of our collective whole as best we can. Here are some ideas for both.

Taking care of ourselves and staying calm:

    1. Be mindful of your social media intake, especially if work or school has been cancelled or staying at home. I also find getting dressed daily and keeping structure to the daily super helpful.
    2. When you feel anxious or spiraling thoughts happen, you are allowed to take care of yourself. Deep breathing, meditation and light yoga at home can be really helpful. If you can get outside for a few minutes that can help, too.
    3. Often when things in our lives feel out of control, it can be comforting to our minds to grip control onto things it perceives it can control: our body, food choices or exercise to name a few. Be thoughtful about recognizing these patterns if they come back or pick up right now, and reach out for support if needed.
    4. Keep your home and where your living clean and decluttered as best as possible.

Taking care of our collective whole:

    1. Social distancing. Even if you feel like you are not at risk, this and washing hands is one of the best things we can do to slow down the spread and reduce overwhelm on our healthcare system.
    2. While I want you to make sure you are feeding yourself and not restricting as a coping mechanism for the anxiety, I also know we all have a lot of concern for those that may not have access to food as much. You can always donate to your local food bank as well as help students that depend on school lunches. You can find out about each of these at @feedingamerica and @nokidhungry. Plus if you are part of a moms group and you know of a mom who is short on formula or breastmilk, sharing what you can or spreading the word online so we can each help each other out.
    3. As best as possible, support small businesses and workers who's wages depend on service to others. Tipping extra for the service industry or shopping locally when can are some ideas to support.
    4. Be kind to others, its easy to lash out when we all feel anxiety. Let's support and uplift each other up.

I know that there are listeners across the globe listening too, so while I live in the US and am speaking from that experience, I want to send a massive virtual hug to all of us, across the globe, who are dealing with this crisis.

If you are in need of emotional support or you know would like to ask for support for someone in need, come over to our Facebook group, Nourishing Women Community, for a safe haven to collect your thoughts.

I also want to send a big thank you to our new Tuesday podcast sponsors, Better Help. Better Help is a professional counseling service platform done through a secure online platform. Better Help is affordable, available worldwide, and you can get started within 24 hours.

153: How Eating Disorders Impact the Gut Microbiome Mar 03, 2020
    Show notes

The purpose of today's episode is to share the digestive response our bodies have to an eating disorder and how this impacts our gut microbiome.

For the context of this episode, I'm going to refer to eating disorders to include the entire spectrum: chronic dieting, disordered eating, orthorexia, anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. Since I specialize in orthorexia, I'll really be touching on this quite a bit in this episode, yet all eating disorders (ED) have an effect so this really is an episode to say all forms of ED impact digestion.

According to Marci Evans, 98% of those affected by ED have digestive issues. Specifically functional gut disorders (meaning no structural damage), although structural disorders can absolutely impact those with ED, too. In today's episode we share why this may be that so many with ED struggle with digestive issues, as well as why those with digestive issues are more prone to develop ED.

There are so many mechanisms at play for how the digestive process is affected when we have an eating disorder, in this episode we will review how an eating disorder impacts digestion via:

    • The gut brain axis
    • The stress response of the body
    • Inflammation
    • Decreased variety of the microbiome
    • Decreased intake of prebiotics (food for bacteria)
    • As well as next steps to take as a patient and health care provider

You can purchase their muffin mixes at Simple Mills website, on Amazon and you can find Simple Mills at most health food stores and grocery stores too. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

151: Honoring Your Hunger and Fullness Cues Feb 25, 2020
    Show notes

One of the most common complaints I hear from you is feeling annoyed with your hunger and your body's cues to eat.

I first encourage you to begin my questioning why you feel that way.

Why is it that we find a body's signal to us annoying? Desire to question it? Or straight up don't listen to it?

Diet culture is the culprit. So let's choose otherwise.

Honoring hunger isn't "giving in", it's body respect! It's self care! It's listening to your body and one of the first steps to that mind body connection.

Learn more in this episode about primal hunger, hunger and fullness interoceptive cues, the hunger fullness scale, not turning these principles into a diet and the benefits of honoring your hunger and fullness.
