108 – Introduction to the inner critic and its types Nov 20, 2016
    Show notes

(duration 19:27) This is the beginning of our series about the “inner critic,” wherein we delve into the various facets of this internal dialogue, which essentially lacks self-acceptance, self-compassion, and self-love. Different kinds of inner critic have been distinguished based on their patterns. Understanding their nature in relation to the nature of the self assists in gaining a healthy perspective. We explore those categorized by therapist Jay Early, who noted seven types: perfectionist; guilt-tripper; underminer; destroyer; molder; taskmaster; and, inner controller. Of course, there are developmental reasons for these critics, even though they come with sizable costs, which we’ll comprehend in upcoming episodes.

    107 – Unconditional self-love Oct 23, 2016
    Show notes

(duration 23:33) We return from an extended summer hiatus to discuss the nature of unconditional love and unconditional self-love. The internal dialogue with ourselves needs explicit attention and understanding, in order to become more integrated and loving. What does it mean to put conditions on love, and what does forgiveness mean—and how does this relate to self-love? Imagine a world in which children’s self-worth is unconditionally accepted, which means that their persons are honored for who they truly are, without judgment of good or bad, or right or wrong. Now, imagine having your child-self treated with unconditional love. This is a process you can cultivate within yourself, so that you learn to treat yourself with kindness and compassion.

Here’s a sentence stem to complete with 6-10 endings for more insight, especially more subconscious understanding…

    106 – The importance of taking time-in for yourself Jul 25, 2016
    Show notes

(duration 21:53) In this episode we discuss the nature of intrinsic motivation to heal and grow, which entails focusing on one’s developmental history and practicing the mental essentials of self-acceptance, self-empathy, and self-compassion. We need to cultivate a loving relationship with ourselves, so our needs don’t often get sacrificed. A life filled with meaning and happiness is within your reach.

    100 – HMFB takeaways Feb 01, 2013
    Show notes

    (duration 55:52)

hmfbpostpicIn this final episode (yes, we’re ending at the century mark), we share some of our stories abroad, such as coconuts and natural pedestrian movement in Vietnam. ;) We cover some of the highlights over the past few years, as well as some typical flawed messages from the mainstream, such as the DASH diet. Salt is not really the demon that we’ve been advised to avoid, but a rather important mineral for healthy functioning–same goes for fat; the widespread fat phobia (or phat fobia;) is terribly unfortunate. Self-knowledge via self-esteem principles and the process of connecting with feelings and needs (nonviolent communication) will enable you to really improve your health and enrich your life. Thanks for listening and for being part of our journey. Best wishes to you all, and make sure to follow your bliss. =)

99 – Interview with Eat by Choice, Not by Habit author Sylvia Haskvitz Dec 19, 2012
    Show notes

(duration 36:57)itunes_podcast_iconSylviaEBCIn this show we talk with nonviolent communication (NVC) trainer Sylvia about her book and experiences helping individuals relate to themselves and others in life-enriching ways. Instead of playing the blame game (which can become never-ending), NVC focuses on the quality of the connection in order to empathize and get needs met. Sometimes food can be used as a strategy to try to fulfill some other need (yet to be discovered). Mindfulness brings choice, a vital need. It’s helpful to connect compassionately with your inner voice(s) (especially your “inner critic”), so you can overcome costly strategies. In the face of demands (both inner- and outer-), we sometimes try to meet our need for autonomy in tragic ways. This presents an opportunity to bring more awareness to your inner dialogue, be best friends with yourself, and embrace better strategies.
