    Today’s Topic: Leadership

If you’re going to lead other people – in your job, in your home, or in your community – you have to learn how to lead yourself.

At the same time, if you’re anything like me, you have to be able to recognize whether or not leading is something you excel at. Over the years, I’ve realized that I’m not the best person for leading a team of employees, so I’ve had to put systems and people in place to help me. Kim, on the other hand, is a natural!

So, today, Kim and I are going to get a little introspective before she shares three things you need to know and embody if you want to be a great leader:

    1. A leader’s job is to hold other people’s vision
    2. A leader empowers. A leader doesn’t enable
    3. Your ego will inhibit your ability to grow as a leader, and you can only lead as far as you can grow

Steve Valentine isn’t just one of the most successful real estate investors I know – he’s also a collaborator who helps others in the real estate community learn, invest, and grow. So the Valentine family are knocking it out of the park right now, and they’re teaching others what to do when they’re at bat, but Steve definitely struck out a few times before he found his niche.

    In This Conversation We Cover:

    • [4:45] How theft pushed Steve to, reluctantly at first, join the real estate game
    • [5:45] The most important lesson that Steve learned from his dad
    • [7:15] What Steve learned from the real estate bubble bursting

157: Fri-Date | Is your dream bigger than your excuse? Jul 05, 2019
    Show notes

Today’s Topic: Is your dream bigger than your excuse?

Today Kim and I talk dreams and achieving goals. No matter how big your dream, the question is still valid. The reality is we could have quit so many times in our 15 years of “overnight” success. We could have found so many excuses, but our dream was always so much bigger!

Sometimes people confuse freedom with options but having that dream is so important to success. It was always a big challenge building the business. The question I have is: Why was it that we didn’t quit where others do so?

Kim’s theory is that everything happens for a reason and it’s important to keep following the path you’ve chosen. Other people would watch our travel videos and dream. We were selling that dream of freedom and travel. All of the groundwork in our early work, niche areas has led us to where we are today. It’s all about learning lessons and building understanding.

    It’s also vital to

    • Know what you want.
    • Know whether it’s working or not.
    • If not, change your approach until it works.

Sometimes though the distance in your brain between your goal and belief is too far apart. Ask yourself if your dream is going to happen. Check your gut feeling — is this dream a realistic one? Check your goals. Are they too far out of your belief?

The next step is setting up an action plan to accomplish your dream and getting honest feedback from a group of trusted people.

We discuss my “message from Mars” which is the following: What’s the one thing that you can do, such that by doing it makes everything else on your to-do list easier or unnecessary?

    155: Fri-Date | Taking the long view of success Jun 28, 2019
    Show notes

Today’s Topic: Building success, often over a long time, is the key to achievement.

If you climb a mountain you begin at the bottom, right? Then when you reach the peak, you know you’ve earned it. You can reap the rewards. However, that can take time. Today Kim and I talk about the effort you need to make to start any entrepreneurial journey and to understand that you need to gradually build your platform for success.

As Kim says, you need to pick the lane, the niche, that you want to be known for to start. Then branch out as necessary, move into associated areas. Kim says this isn’t always the case with people she sees, they tend to be scattered rather than focused.

I talk about listening to your intuition. The story about the fire chief understanding when an evacuation is needed immediately is a case in point. It’s when something doesn’t feel right. We all have this and need to listen to it. It’s a survival mechanism.

People often look at successful entrepreneurs and think if they copy them, they too will have success. What they don’t see is the often years of intuition built up through experience that someone needs to have to make those right decisions.

It’s about the hard work that goes into building the success, climbing the mountain. Over time we developed deep relationships with people. I talk about the importance of not judging every moment, of letting it be. As Kim says, look at the wider view, the foundations that have been laid in a project for a successful future.

So, don’t judge the moment, she adds. Trust your thought, trust your intuition. Keep going, don’t let fear stop you.

Sometimes the bigger the success, the longer the journey. Good luck!

Today Kim and I talk about being married with a young child. We have an angel of a child who seems to take more of our time as she grows. The things we talk about in this episode can be applied to anyone who has kids, or are planning having children or, as Kim says, even those without children can learn from our experiences.

My challenge is as follows, every morning I am woken by my daughter and we create a story on what we dreamed about and we need to follow this morning routine. Every evening she demands more of my time. As Kim points out, she and I are peas in a pod. I pass on my love of a routine to her. Listen up and you’ll hear the psychological to and fros that occur in our household and learn as Kim points to it being a time management problem.

In today’s episode you will learn…

    • How my daughter and I both survive on routines.
    • Learn how I play “double dutch” with my daughter for Kim’s attention.
    • I have to have a flow when I talk. Interrupted, I’m in trouble!
    • How this podcast is therapy for me!
    • How Kim settles everything with her sage views on it being a time quality problem.
    • Sophia now wants to spend as much time with her Dad as her Mom, which wasn’t always the case. Sophia loves games, loves people.
    • How I deal with the fact that my mornings and evenings aren’t my time/our time any longer. It’s family time.
    • How the difficulty as an entrepreneur to not be able to use this time to flesh out ideas. This is difficult when there’s a child who demands attention.
    • Switching from entrepreneur mode to Dad mode is, for me, difficult.
    • Being female means doing this all day, says Kim. Making time for everything is the priority.
    • Kim says it’s important to be intentional about making time together.

    151: Fri-Date | Use a growth mindset to overcome life upheavals Jun 14, 2019
    Show notes

Today’s Topic: Today Kim and I talk about the break of ritual that occurs when traveling and how that can sometimes be a problem for a family. We’re planning a four-month holiday in Europe and you’ll hear in this episode that I fully admit to being a ritual-based guy. As Kim says though, when that outside pressure of the holiday pushes us into new, untested routines, we need to be prepared for change, particularly when as we juggle the needs of a growing child.

In this episode you’ll learn …

    • How stepping outside of your comfort zone is an opportunity for growth.
    • How Kim and I will be leveraging our “holiday” to grow our respective businesses — and ourselves.
    • That circumstances — such as a holiday — will often determine a change in ritual.
    • How the change that surrounds the growing up of a child will change our routine and how we cope with this.
    • How to negotiate the time needs for all the family.
    • That the needs of every family member are equal.
    • That changes such as Kim and I are doing — selling everything and moving for four months — isn’t easy and requires a growth mindset.
