    Today’s Topic: Transitions in life

We're less than 30 days away from moving from this beautiful life in Italy to Southern California. Although we’re excited about the move, we also love the life we’ve created here, so it’s going to be a big transition. We love that here nobody's saying, “Would you like fries with that?” The other day Kim was at the deli and the guy said, “I want you to taste something. I've been cooking this ham for 40 hours.” It was the most amazing ham Kim had ever tasted and it wasn't an upsell, he wanted to share it because he was proud of it.

We’re at the point in the transition where it’s starting to get a bit hard. Fun fact: the cost of living in SoCal is about twice as much as in Italy. Sophia will have to go to a new school, we’ll have to make new friends, and we have to rent a house. We're doing calls with potential landlords and they're asking, “Now, what is this Work Hard Play Hard business you have? I don't need you to be having all these parties in the house.” We’re willing to spend up to 5K a month on renting a house, but that’s pretty low for an amazing house close to a beach in a good school district. Our flight from Italy was originally booked to Atlanta. We wanted to change it to land in California, and Delta was going to charge us $26,000, so we ended up buying new tickets with Air Italy.

The biggest gift we think you can give yourself with transition is to bring on the suck. In other words, acknowledge that transitions are hard, allow the shit to hit the fan and breathe through it. Know that God or the universe is conspiring in your favor to make your dreams come true.

Today’s Topic: Our life in Italy

This episode comes to you from a cafe in the middle of a street in Florence, Italy. We’re loving life here so much that we’re actually looking into coming back to live here long-term.

This is how our day goes. We wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy. And then we walk out on our balcony and we're on the top floor of this palazzo and we can see the Duomo and Santa Croce. We stroll Sophia down to school, which is about a mile away. Everybody walks here. It's a pedestrian friendly city with bicycles, scooters and people walking down the street, so one mile is nothing.

As soon as you get out on the cobblestone streets, you're hit with the sounds and the smells of Florence. The Italians are bicycling to work and they're beautifully dressed and they're ringing their little bicycle bell so they don't kill you when they come by. But there's no rush here. Italians get up and they walk to the cafe. And they stand at the counter and they chat and sip their espresso. They talk and communicate with the people around them and no-one walks around staring at their cell phone. People look you in the eye and say good morning. Parents aren't working and grinding all day and coming home exhausted.

In the US we used to get up on a Sunday and drown ourselves in mimosas, eat some sort of eggs for brunch and watch YouTube videos about Italy. We were bored. Yesterday it was Sunday and here in Florence we went to see Machiavelli, Dante and Leonardo. We walked the city and we had the best gelato ever.

Feeling inspired by our travel talk? Check out the episode to hear more about our life in Italy and why we’re loving it so much.

Pavel Stuchlik went from growing up in communist Czechoslovakia to having a career as a professional cyclist, owning Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt and Orange Theory franchises and being an international DJ. For him, the why is more important than what he’s doing. His mission with music is to unify people through the frequency of love. In business he came to realize that if his employees were unhappy, unfulfilled and weren’t making enough to meet their needs, that wasn’t making him a greater person, even if he was making great money.

    • [8:43] How he sold carbon bike parts to fulfil his dream of becoming a professional cyclist
    • [15:10] How one of the biggest lessons he has learned is to ask what is the driving force behind anything he does

    • [25:29] Why DJing for him is about alchemy, mediation and unifying people with the frequency of love

175: Fri-Date | How To Avoid Looking Like Buffalo Mozzarella Sep 06, 2019
    Show notes

    Today’s Topic: Planning Long-term Travel

A few people have asked how we specifically chose the eight or so destinations that we're traveling in over this four month journey in Europe. So today we’re looking at the process we went through to determine where we were going.

We knew that my mastermind was going to start in Monaco. And I had another one four months later that was starting in Florence, Italy. So we knew that we had that space in between.

If you’re American you can’t actually stay in European countries that are part of the Schengen zone for four months unless you have some weird visa so we had to include some places that are outside of the Schengen zone. For those we chose Croatia and Montenegro.

We literally looked at a map of the world, and we zoomed in on places then looked at YouTube videos and Airbnb reviews. As we’re travelling for a long time we check if the Airbnbs have things like a stove and somewhere to do laundry. When you’re booking Airbnbs, really think about your lifestyle. Are you going to be able to get up the stairs? Do you need a terrace? Do you need to make sure you have more than one bedroom? How is it set up in the kitchen? What we love with Airbnb is that you can reach out to the owners and ask them these questions. If you’re going to be working from the Airbnb, I would strongly recommend that you ask them if they can do a speed test on their internet.Renting a car in Europe has been kind of a pain in the ass. We pre-booked (but didn’t pay for) for a car online for when we got to Montenegro then found out they wanted to charge twice as much when we went to pick it up. So we’ve found it better to negotiate in person.

You also want to look at the ease of travel from place to place. Are there direct flights? Do we need a car at the destination? We’ve used Skyscanner.com to find cheap flights and Ryanair and easyJet are good affordable airlines for flights within Europe.Check the weather. We were going to go to Marrakech then realized it was going to be 120 degrees in August and we would have been like little ants roasting on the desert floor. We made a spreadsheet to budget for our trip and then reverse engineered a way to make that amount of money through Kim’s network marketing company and prepaid for everything. We recommend you don’t eat all your meals out when you’re traveling for a good amount of time. It's just too much to ask of yourself financially and too much to ask of your body - you'll look like buffalo mozzarella if you're not careful. Finally, dream big when you’re planning. Create a giant list (we wrote all our ideas out on big sticky notes) then look over them and visualize each step in the journey so you can work out what’s feasible.

Brendan Kane pioneered one of the first ever influencer campaigns by getting Youtubers with big audiences to interview actors in upcoming films. He’s built online platforms for A-listers including Taylor Swift and Rihanna and advised brands such as MTV, Skechers, Vice and IKEA on how to establish and grow their digital audience and engagement. Then he wondered if the digital marketing techniques he had developed would work for a non-celebrity with zero followers such as himself, so he tried it out and gained 1 million Facebook followers in 30 days.

    In This Conversation We Cover:

    • [6:40] Why Brendan wanted to work in the film industry
    • [16:26] The challenge of marketing movies (unless it’s a sequel you’re basically building a brand in three months)
    • [24:52] How Brendan saw an opportunity for big brands to use more analytics or data when making marketing decisions
    • [28:34] How it’s important to know WHY you’re generating a social following
    • [33:31] Psychedelic therapy sessions with psilocybin

    173: Fri-Date | Bidets In The Way Aug 30, 2019
    Show notes

    Today’s Topic: Self-care When Traveling

We're two months into our four month journey here in Europe. Today we’re talking about the lessons and the takeaways that we've had so far.

We’re currently in Lecce in southern Italy. The AirBnb we’re staying in has a few challenges. My feet are hanging off the end of the bed, the bathroom’s really narrow and has this huge bidet in the way so brushing my teeth is really difficult to do without knocking an elbow on the wall, everyone has to turn Wi-Fi off so one person can send an email and you have to put out a different type of trash for recycling every night. It’s also difficult to get a table at restaurants and siesta means that everything is closed from 1-5pm.

The biggest difference between vacation and travel is that vacations is usually a time that you're checking out and you're just going pure into enjoyment whereas when you’re traveling for a while, you're going to have bidets in your way.

There is a folk tale from this region about a woman being bitten by a tarantula and being put under a spell, and that’s an analogy for what happened to Kim here. She was really struggling with being out of routine and felt irritated and out of sorts for about 10 days. She was super frustrated and hadn’t been able to come up with any ideas for video content. We had a conversation about it, and she decided she’d go for a walk around town by herself the next day. After about 45 minutes of walking, her mind started to clear. And then she was able to come up with an idea to do an Instagram video and just stepped into an alleyway and recorded it.

Kim appreciates that I helped her talk things through. If you see your partner behaving in a way that is not typical of them, chances are there's something that's bubbling up inside them. And something simple like giving them an hour to just sort of disconnect and take the time will allow them to come back better.

One lesson we’ve learnt is that even if you're on vacation or traveling, you still need the things that make you human, the shock absorbers that you need to get through life, for example, journaling or meditating. If you don't take care of those self-care needs, it can bite you in the ass.

Tiffany Carter takes the mystery out of making big money while doing something you love. She uses a magnetic combination of her clear cut communication style that she developed as a TV news broadcaster for NBC and CBS, her business savvy and proven strategies as a multimillionaire entrepreneur, and her intuitive ability to connect with women on a deeper level to uncover what's blocking them from achieving their dreams. Tiffany herself went from a life of self-destruction to success after suffering devastating sexual abuse from the age of 11. She says that her mission runs deeper than helping women create wealth; her bigger purpose is to help women find their worth.

    In This Conversation We Cover:

    • [8:03] How what kept Tiffany truly alive when she was healing from sexual abuse was knowing she was going to help others heals
    • [10:11] How Tiffany came from a very wealthy home but would have swapped all of that for a loving environment
    • [13:13] How Tiffany never wanted to be an entrepreneur because her Harvard-school mom was one and she worked seven days a week, 12 to 14 hours a day.
    • [25:54] How Tiffany had to stop seeking external validation and look at spirituality and inside herself
    • [29:30] How catty and nasty the competition in newsrooms can be
    • [31:56] Why she started her personal brand, Project Me
    • [34:06] How Tiffany is working less and making more money

    171: Fri-Date | We Are Not Relationship Counselors But... Aug 23, 2019
    Show notes

    Today’s Topic: Our Marriage

Kim and I are not relationship counselors, but people ask us relationship questions all the time. We came together after failed marriages so we do a lot of work on ours and there are a lot of people that we learn from, including Tony Robbins, Cloé Madanes and John and Julie Gottman.

In this episode we answer a few questions, and the first one is, how do you manage your expectations of each other? The answer is that we have a conversation about how we like to live and assign a numerical value to each of our needs. And whoever has a higher need in that particular area wins. For example, my need for neat, organized clean spaces wins out in our living spaces because Kim really doesn’t care.

If you have expectations of your significant other, write them down and ask, is it in their zone of genius? Is it something they naturally do? If it's not their expectation, then the buck is going to have to stop with you. For example, if having dirty dishes in the sink drives you crazy, then go do the dishes yourself.

If you have all these expectations and your partner's not meeting the expectations, and you guys are fighting about these things, my guess says there's a bigger underlying issue and these little things are the straw that broke the camel's back because in reality they're not that big of a deal.

Couples also sometimes get into a lot of horse trading. I did this for you, why don't you do this for me? And that is a recipe for freaking disaster.

The way we approach it is really try and listen to what each other is saying. So if I hear Kim saying something two or three times, then I know it's important to her. I want to do things because I love her. And I want her to feel taken care of and loved. And even beyond all of that, I want to do it just because I love her. We’re playing at a high level relationship where Kim’s dream is my dream and what lights her up lights me up so we’re constantly trying to anticipate each other’s needs.

If you have a significant other and you feel they don’t do anything for you, dig deep and say, for the next month or whatever I am going to continue to give 100% without any expectations of anything coming back to me. If nothing changes possibly you are with the wrong person or you need to have a conversation with that person about how unfair that is.

The next question is, how can you give your spouse or significant other negative feedback without damaging the relationship? Knowing what makes your spouse tick and their love language is really important. So reconnecting with what lights that person up, what makes them feel loved and secure and taken care of and happy, and what makes them feel like they're contributing. When giving feedback, an idea is to start with yourself and what you wish you were doing better and then possibly they will want to reciprocate where they feel like they're falling short.

Kim and I don't have big blow-ups because our communication is so open and we’re interacting on a micro level all day. The other thing is that our natures are very much in alignment with each other. We like to do similar things.

A lot of people try to change their spouse. But who did you marry? Or who are you with? Why did you choose to be with them? And what did you know about them at that time? When Kim and I got married she knew that I need to have a really clean house and I knew that she loves to travel to weird places, so we don’t try to change each other. If your boyfriend is lazy and his shit is all around his apartment, that’s not going to change when you walk down the aisle.

The other side of that coin is be careful not to freeze somebody in time because people do change and grow. Something that comes up a lot is that one partner will be getting into personal development and they're starting to look inside and seeing their flaws and their limiting beliefs. But their spouse is still over there on the couch eating Cheetos. Instead of trying to change them, try to expand their mind. Introduce new concepts slowly by telling your personal story versus pointing the finger and trying to change them.
