    Show notes

    Today’s Topic: Network marketing

Since we’re traveling around Europe for four months, we’re getting a lot of ‘it must be nice’ comments. But five years ago we were working twice as hard for half the money. We were living in a dark apartment and we were struggling to figure out what our future was. As Kim says, it’s not ‘must be nice’. It’s ‘we created this bitch’.

A big portion of the income that is allowing us to travel is income that we’ve created in the world of network marketing. We're not trying to sell anybody on network marketing. If it's not for you, it's not for you. But this subject has come up a lot because of our travels so we thought we would dedicate this show to answering some commonly asked questions about network marketing.

How did we get started in network marketing? After we had our daughter, Sophia, Kim had planned to take six weeks off, then hire a nanny and go back to managing my chiropractic clinic. But as soon as I put Sophia in her arms she realized she didn’t want to do that. A lot of our friends had networking marketing businesses and were using it to create financial freedom or just extra income so Kim decided to try it for herself.

Kim just had somebody reach out and ask her, how could they really make sure they were successful in network marketing? And the answer is super simple. If you go half in, you're going to get a half result. If you go all in, you're going to get the total result. But you have to know that this is not a quick fix or an overnight success.

Some of the beliefs and practices that have helped Kim be successful with network marketing are:

    • Understanding It can be done - we had seen our friends be successful
    • Understanding that your ego is not your amigo - Kim knew she was starting at ground zero so she had to shut her pie hole and learn from the people that were successful
    • Consistently showing up, even when you’re not making sales
    • Understanding that it was going to take a long time to make a decent income

If you have more questions about network marketing, DM Kim on Instagram. She loves to brainstorm and reverse engineer people’s goals.

Chris Goodman was at law school and working a job in corporate litigation when he found himself yelling at two squirrels in his backyard. He was sitting at home trying to study contract law when the squirrels started doing what squirrels do, running around and making a lot of noise. Chris screamed at them then had one of those reckoning moments - how did he get so stressed that he was yelling at squirrels? He started paying attention to how much stress he was experiencing and realized that the reasons he was staying in law school were not good reasons. So ultimately he decided to quit and find more fulfilment in his life. Real estate looked fun so he picked up a license and quickly became one of the top buyers’ agents in the country, earned Rookie of the Year, help build a million-dollar team and coached three more agents to become Rookie of the Year. In 2017 Chris took his passion for coaching into his own business and today he’s an entrepreneur, consultant and coach for business owners who want to become their best. He specializes in leadership, sales, training, team building, mindset coaching and creating a life and business that offers true freedom.

    • [5:58] What Chris loved and didn’t love about growing up in southern Indiana
    • [8:01] Why Chris became a lawyer
    • [11:31] What advice Chris would give to people at the beginning of their working lives

    167: Fri-Date | The Bucket System Aug 09, 2019
    Show notes

Today’s Topic: Mapping out financial goals

As we record, Kim’s eating grapes from the grapevine at the back of our Airbnb in Montenegro. After our 4-month Europe trip we’re moving to California, which is way more expensive than Georgia, where we used to live, so in this episode, Kim and I talk about our financial goals and how we plan to achieve them. We just started using a system we learnt from one of our mentors.

The system is super simple. You have three financial buckets. Bucket 1 is about safety and security, bucket 2 is about comfort and pleasure and bucket 3 is called the baller bucket and it’s about your wild and audacious financial goals.

The idea is that you fill the buckets in order. First you do the safety and security bucket. And that means you're ridding yourself of any debt, you're saving for any emergencies. Then, once that bucket is full, then you move into your comfort and pleasure bucket. And that's when you get to pay off your house and you can buy the car that you want and do those things that are all about building comfort and pleasure. And then you move to the baller bucket.Let's say you've got $10,000 a month that you're paying in debt. Well, once that debt is paid off, then you’ve freed up 10,000 bucks a month to be able to put towards the comfort and pleasure bucket. So as you're accomplishing different goals, it has a snowball effect and, before you know it, you’ve got an avalanche.

In thinking about our buckets, we've mapped out what we want to do and how we have to fund those buckets. Part of the strategy is that we have multiple income streams. This kind of clarity around our goals has really helped us and we’ve discovered that by focusing on one goal, we actually accomplish all kinds of other goals. For example, we used to have individual vision boards but then we decided to make one together and focus on one goal, moving our family to the South Bay Hermosa Beach area by August 2019. To do that we had to sell my clinic. What ended up happening is we did that and then things that were on Kim’s vision board, living in Italy and traveling in Europe, became possible too.

165: Fri-Date | Are You Stepping Out of Your Bubble? Aug 02, 2019
    Show notes

    Today’s Topic: Montenegro

Kim and I are currently in Montenegro. If you don’t know where Montenegro is, it was part of the former Yugoslavia and is south of Croatia, Russia and Bosnia. I was nervous about coming to Montenegro and at first it was a total shock to the system. First I got into a little trouble at the border for Instagramming photos of the police. Then we drove around without any phone signal trying to find our Airbnb only to discover it was at the top of a very steep hill. 155 steps, one broken flip-flop and many misadventures with luggage later, I got up to the Airbnb to realize it came with a cat. I’m so allergic to cats I get hives on the palm of my hands. Then there were the bugs, the flies and the mosquitoes.

I woke up the next morning with my eyes swollen shut from the cat allergy and suffering the shits because of the dinner we’d had the night before.

At this point I was pretty annoyed. Then Kim revealed that when she’d said we were staying for “like, 14 days”, she really meant 18.

You know what, though? I went to do my morning routine and came back a lot happier. Kim booked us this Airbnb because she knew we needed time away from everything to rest and reset. So we’re looking out at the mountains, our Airbnb has a rooftop yoga studio, we got some medication for my allergies and I’ve been hanging out with the cat.

Kim and I have been using this time to focus and work on our goals. Instead of sitting in a coffee shop somewhere or sitting home and executing a to do list, I'm dreaming and visualizing because my state of mind is completely different here.

My takeaways from this experience are:

    • The brain learns from mistakes and surprises.
    • We become inspired by putting ourselves in environments that cause us to grow.
    • I have a tendency to go, go, go and to achieve, achieve, achieve. And sometimes in doing that, you don't take the time to be thoughtful about your life, to be thoughtful about the why behind what you're doing. And you certainly don't take the time to execute on those ideas that you're trying to create.

    163: Fri-Date | Don’t be a leg-humper Jul 26, 2019
    Show notes

    Today’s Topic: Leg-humping

Today’s episode is inspired by a post from our friend, Chris Harder. He coined the term ‘leg-humping’ to describe people who are trying to climb the social marketing online business ladder. You can apply it to anything. When someone comes into a business or some sort of group or environment, you can always tell the person that's trying to find out who there can help them the most, the person who is going to make them look better. They’re thinking, If I just get that person to do an IG takeover, then I'll skyrocket, or, if I can just get that person to take a picture with me and I can post it, it's going to catapult me into the universe. if you really want to up level your tribe, you have to do it in an authentic way, provide value and create real relationships. Practice what we call sensory acuity, using your senses to see if what you're saying or doing with someone is landing. And don’t gossip because we can't connect with somebody that we can't trust.

    161: Fri-Date | Making your dream your reality Jul 19, 2019
    Show notes

Today’s Topic: The 15-Year Overnight Success

This podcast, our business, the incredible tribe of people around us: it all started as a dream.

Not last night. Not last year. Over a decade ago.

Then, we created a plan – and after some time, a few stumbles, and a whole lot of action, we started seeing our dreams come true. Some may look at our posts on social media and call it an overnight success, but it took 15 years.

And we know that a lot of you are dreamers, too... but we also know that bridging that gap from dream to reality can feel impossible at times! So, today, we’re going to share the four things that helped shifted everything for us over the course of 15 years:

    • Getting really, really honest with yourself (and your partner, if you have one) – dig deep to find out who you really are and what you really want, without the fear of judgement.
    • Learning to manage your mindset. You will – not might – run into physical, mental, and emotional obstacles, so you have to be prepared for that.
    • Be willing to take action and get uncomfortable. Manifesting is great, but you can’t manifest anything if you aren’t willing to make it happen.
    • Celebrate your small wins along the way!
