    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

Dalton McGuinty is putting forward a positive, responsible plan for Ontario families that will see us reach our goal of making Ontario the place where the best-educated workers make the cutting-edge products and services that the world wants to buy. He has set an agenda heavily focused on jobs and the economy. His top priority remains education. Ontario’s schools are the best in the English-speaking world. The McGuinty government is phasing in North America’s first full-day kindergarten program. We will build on this progress with new emphasis on science, after-school programs and nutritious snacks that will help encourage healthy habits. Under McGuinty’s leadership in health care, Ontarians now have the shortest surgical wait times in the country. Since 2003, over 1 million more Ontarians gained access to a family doctor. Premier McGuinty is now working to redesign our health care system so it is ready for Ontario seniors. That’s why his plan includes house calls and a new Healthy Home Renovations tax credit to help families and create jobs. The government is also renewing its commitment to postsecondary education, creating more spaces and cutting tuition by 30 per cent for low- and middle-income students. We’ve made record investments in infrastructure that creates jobs today, and strengthens the province tomorrow. And we’ve introduced tax reforms that are attracting investment and creating jobs. Ontario is now a manufacturing hub for clean energy technology and a North American leader. Dalton McGuinty is Ontario’s 24th Premier and was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 1990. He became Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party in 1996 and led his party to a majority government in 2003. He was reelected to a second majority government in October, 2007. In 2011, he led the Ontario Liberal Party to a historic third mandate — the first time a Liberal Premier has done so in 129 years. Born on July 19, 1955, Dalton McGuinty was raised in Ottawa’s Alta Vista neighbourhood. One of ten children in a close family, he credits his parents with teaching him the values and ethics that guide him as Premier. Before entering politics, Dalton McGuinty practised law in Ottawa. He met his wife, Terri when they were both high school students in Ottawa. They have been married since 1980 and have four grown children.

In December, Prime Minister Harper and President Obama announced an Action Plan on Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness. This Border Action Plan will have many benefits for job creation and economic growth – especially in Canada’s largest province and biggest city. Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird will outline the measures contained in this new agreement and its many benefits for Toronto, Ontario and Canada, and will then take questions from Canadian Club members. John Baird was first elected to the House of Commons in 2006 and re-elected in 2008 and 2011. In February 2006, Mr. Baird was sworn in as President of the Treasury Board. In this role, he introduced and successfully steered the new Federal Accountability Act through both Houses of Parliament. In January 2007, he was named Minister of the Environment and, in October 2008, he became Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, where he spearheaded the design, negotiation and delivery of some 12,000 infrastructure stimulus projects across the country. In August 2010, he was named Leader of the Government in the House of Commons. From November 2010 to January 2011, he undertook additional responsibilities as Minister of the Environment. He was named Foreign Affairs Minister in May 2011. Prior to entering federal politics, Mr. Baird was a member of Ontario’s provincial legislature, where he represented the constituency of Nepean-Carleton from 1995 to 2005. During that time, he served as Minister of Community and Social Services, Energy, Francophone Affairs, Children and Youth Services, and as Government House Leader. Mr. Baird is a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, an honorary member of the Kiwanis Club of Nepean, and a lifetime member of Canada’s largest Association for Community Living. In 2008, he was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. Maclean’s Magazine and the Historica-Dominion Institute named him 2010 Parliamentarian of the Year, after a vote by his colleagues in all parties in the House of Commons. Mr. Baird holds a Bachelor of Arts in political studies from Queen’s University.
