    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

On April 25th, The Canadian Club of Toronto and Equal Voice will, once again, join forces to spotlight women in politics at the Seventh Annual Women in Public Life Luncheon. For more than ten years Equal Voice has been promoting the election of more women in all levels of government. This year we are pleased to announce Andrea Horwath, Leader of Ontario’s New Democrats, as our keynote speaker and Equal Voice’s EVE award recipient. Andrea Horwath is the Leader of Ontario’s New Democrats. Elected Leader in 2009, Andrea brings energy, honesty and compassion to a party that offers sensible solutions to the challenges facing people in Ontario. Born in Stoney Creek to an autoworker’s family, Andrea earned her degree in Labour Studies from McMaster University paying her way with low-wage jobs. After university, Andrea took jobs organizing in her community – teaching and training workers in Hamilton, developing co-op housing in Welland and working as a community organizer for a local legal clinic. Her own life experience and those of the people she worked with led her to politics and Hamilton City Hall. After serving seven years as a Councillor in Hamilton municipal politics, Andrea handily won election as the MPP for Hamilton East. As MPP, and today as Leader, Andrea is focused on making life more affordable, protecting jobs, improving health and education and building a better future for all Ontarians.

Despite constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Treaty rights and decades of court cases affirming these rights, First Nations continue to face serious social and economic challenges. The way forward requires governments and all Canadians to recognize the legal imperative of reconciliation and the economic potential it represents to First Nations and Canada as a whole. Such potential is evident in the opportunity for First Nation-driven economic and resource development, partnerships with the private sector and the creation of an educated and skilled labour force. Reconciliation is not only a moral issue. It can be a key contributor to Canada’s competitiveness as well as generating justice, hope and opportunity for First Nations. National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo is a Hereditary Chief from the Ahousaht First Nation. In July 2009, A-in-chut was elected to a three-year mandate as National Chief to the Assembly of First Nations. As National Chief, Atleo has advanced priorities of education and sustainable economic development through recognition of First Nation government rights and responsibility. In June 2011, National Chief Atleo together with the National Congress of American Indians hosted the first International Indigenous Summit on Energy and Mining. This highly successful event – brought First Nations together with industry and government agencies highlighting the incredible potential of advancing First Nation economic interests. National Chief Atleo has consistently reached out to international interests in Europe, South America and Asia emphasizing the opportunity of working in partnership with First Nations. Atleo graduated in 2003 with a Masters of Education in Adult Learning and Global Change from the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia (in partnership with University of British Columbia, University of Western Cape South Africa, and University of Linkoping Sweden). In 2008, Atleo’s commitment to education was recognized in his appointment as Chancellor of Vancouver Island University, becoming BC’s first indigenous Chancellor. He received an honourary doctorate of laws degree in Education from Ontario’s Nipissing University June 2010.

This is a secular age, and secularism often makes believers wary. Similarly, those who cherish secularism are often wary of manifestations of faith in the public square. How can there be a fruitful dialog between faith and secularism? Archbishop Thomas Christopher Collins was born and raised in Guelph, Ontario, where his father was the circulation manager of the Guelph Mercury and his mother was a legal secretary. He is the only son and the youngest of three siblings. His childhood home was situated behind The Church of Our Lady, where he attended and served morning Mass. Archbishop Collins considered being a teacher or a lawyer but was profoundly inspired by his Grade 11 English teacher, Father Newstead, at Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School, who knowing him, suggested that he should consider the priesthood. In 1969 he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (English) from St. Jerome College in Waterloo. In 1973 he obtained two degrees, a M.A. (English) from the University of Western Ontario and a Bachelor of Theology from St. Peter’s Seminary in London, Ontario. That same year he was ordained to the priesthood on May 5, 1973 in the Cathedral of Christ the King, Hamilton, by Most Reverend Paul Reding. While studying in Rome, specializing in sacred scripture and the Book of Revelations, he received his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Bible Institute in 1978 and a Doctorate in Theology from the Gregorian University in 1986. After holding various academic appointments, in 1997 he was appointed as Bishop of Saint Paul, Alberta. Two years later, he was named the Archbishop of Edmonton. In 2001, while in Edmonton he was named Apostolic Administrator of Saint Paul and held these positions until he was appointed in 2007 as the Archbishop of Toronto. In 2007 Archbishop Collins became a member of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops Permanent Council, the Chancellor of the University of St. Michael’s College and the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, in Toronto. He is the Chair of the Board of Governors of St. Augustine’s Seminary, and the Chair of the Board of Directors of Redemptoris Mater Missionary Seminary, Catholic Charities and Catholic Cemeteries and is a Trustee of ShareLife’s Advisory Board. In 2008, Archbishop Collins was elected President of the Ontario Conference of Catholic Bishops. During his time thus far in Toronto, Archbishop Collins has served as a member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, as well as being involved in the Synod of Bishops at a Special Assembly for the Middle East. He has assisted the Holy Father as an Apostolic Visitor in Ireland and also as the Delegate of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith for Anglicanorum Coetibus. He is also on the committee that helps prepare translations of liturgical texts. On January 6, 2012, the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI announced the appointment of Archbishop Collins to the College of Cardinals, with the Consistory for his elevation to that position taking place in Rome on February 18, 2012. Thomas Collins will become the fourth cardinal in the history of the Archdiocese of Toronto and 16th in Canadian history.
