    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is the centrepiece of Canada’s honours system and recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. In celebration of their achievements and contributions to our nation, we invite you join one of Canada’s most respected opinion leaders, Rex Murphy, as he delves into the stories of three oustanding Canadians – Ratna Omidvar, Bruce Kuwabara and Charles Pachter. Rex Murphy was born and raised near St. John’s, Newfoundland, where he graduated from Memorial University. In l968, he went to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Afterwards, returning to Newfoundland, he soon established himself as a quick-witted and accomplished writer, broadcaster and teacher. Rex Murphy’s primary interest is in language and English literature, but he also has a strong link with politics. He was noted throughout Newfoundland for his biting comments on the political scene, and his nightly television tussles on the supper hour show Here and Now with prominent politicians, including Premier Joey Smallwood, became required viewing for a huge audience. Rex Murphy gained an insider’s view of the political scene when he worked as executive assistant to the leader of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland. To get an even closer taste of politics, he ran twice for office in provincial elections — once as a Liberal, once as a Tory — and lost both times. As well as host of Cross Country Checkup, Rex Murphy contributes weekly TV essays on diverse topics to CBC TV’s The National. At The National’s website there are videos of Rex’s TV commentaries. Rex Murphy has won several national and provincial broadcasting awards and has been awarded honorary doctorates in letters by Memorial University, St. Thomas University, and Nipissing University, and an honorary doctorate in laws by the University of Waterloo.

With only one market for crude oil, our most valuable export, Canada’s economic prospects are seriously constrained. Please join us on Monday, May 14th when Janet Holder, Enbridge’s Executive Vice President of Western Access, will discuss how the proposed Northern Gateway Pipelines project will safely move Canadian crude oil beyond North America and onto world energy markets. Royal Mail is the oldest post in the world, founded in 1517. It has continued its proud tradition of delivering the “universal service obligation” with respect to mail and parcels in spite of significant challenges. While several challenges are internal, the company’s future has been put at risk by largely external factors. Key issues have been the timing of liberalisation of the UK mail market vis a vis the company’s modernisation, as well as the regulatory framework. For countries who wish to sustain a strong universal service provider, lessons from the UK are critical to heed. Moya Greene joined Royal Mail as Chief Executive Officer in July 2010. Prior to joining Royal Mail, Moya was President and Chief Executive Officer of Canada Post Corporation. She sat on the Board of Directors of Canada Post, of Purolator Courier Ltd, a subsidiary of Canada Post and still sits on the board of Tim Hortons. Moya has been a senior officer of three of Canada’s largest multinational companies, first in banking and financial services at TD Securities Inc., at CIBC, and at Bombardier Inc. Moya has acquired a strong track record in strategic planning, complex negotiations and relationship building. Moya also has a strong public sector background. She spent the first part of her career in Ottawa where, over a 17-year period, assumed progressively senior roles in seven different Ministries of the federal public service. Moya is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School and Memorial University of Newfoundland. Moya has been named one of Canada’s top 40 female corporate executives and was recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 influential women in both private and public sectors.
