    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Join us on November 13, 2012 as Rod Phillips discusses OLG’s plan to modernize lottery and gaming in Ontario. The plan’s proposal of a new integrated gaming entertainment centre in the GTA has generated a lot of interest and discussion in the media recently – particularly around potential downtown Toronto locations. If the facility is built in downtown Toronto, it could mean 12,000 new permanent jobs, 6,000 constructions jobs, and more than $2 billion in capital investments. Rod Phillips is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG). In his role, working closely with the Board of Directors, Rod recently launched a modernization initiative, which will transform the way lottery and gaming are delivered in Ontario, creating thousands of jobs and increasing OLG’s financial contribution to the province. Prior to joining OLG, Rod was President and CEO of Shepell.fgi, one of North America’s leading providers of health and productivity solutions for employers and organizations. Under his leadership, Shepell·fgi offered integrated services, which have improved the health and productivity of eight million employees and their families from over 7,000 organizations in Canada, and 54 other countries. From 1997 to 2000, Rod was Chief of Staff to Mayor Mel Lastman during his first term as the leader of the newly amalgamated City of Toronto. Rod was once named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 by the Caldwell Partners and the Globe and Mail’s Report on Business and is the Founding Chair of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s Transforming Lives Gala. Rod is a graduate of the MBA program at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, and holds an Honours BA in Political Science and Literature from the University of Western Ontario in London.

    In celebration of Jamaica’s 50th year of independence, we are honoured to welcome to our podium the Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller, Prime Minister of Jamaica. The Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller was sworn in as Prime Minister of Jamaica on January 5, 2012. Previously she had been Prime Minister from March 2006 to September 2007, after having served for 17 years as a Cabinet Minister with portfolio responsibility for Labour and Social Security, Tourism and Local Government, Community Development and Sport. She was conferred with the Order of the Nation in May 2006. Mrs. Simpson Miller has a distinguished record of service at the regional and international levels: she is a member of the Council of Women World Leaders; vice president of the Organization of American States’ High‐level Inter‐American Network on Decentralization, Local Government and Citizen Participation; Chairperson of the Caribbean Forum of Ministers responsible for decentralization, local government, community development and citizen participation, and board member of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum. She has also been a member of the Board of Trustees of CIFAL in Atlanta, Georgia. In March 2007, Mrs. Simpson Miller was awarded the International Olympic Committee’s World Women and Sport Trophy for her outstanding dedication to women in Jamaican Sports – both athletes and administrators. The leading architect of Jamaica’s Master Plan for Sustainable Tourism Development, Mrs Simpson Miller has been tireless in promoting and strengthening urban renewal and community development, leading to fundamental reforms in local government. As Minister of Labour and Welfare, she presided over a significant expansion of Jamaica’s Overseas Work Programme and under her watch; the National Insurance Scheme was transformed into a major component of the government’s social protection system. She was also instrumental in establishing a Labour Chair in the University of the West Indies, Department of Government. In 2009, she received the Distinguished Award for her dedication and commitment to urban renewal and community development from the Mayor, City of Miami and also the Bureau of Women’s Affairs Award for outstanding contribution to the advancement of women’s affairs in Jamaica. Mrs. Simpson Miller was also invited to sit on the board of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), and is presently a member of that board. The Honourable Prime Minister holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Administration, and an Honorary Doctorate from the Union Institute and University of Cincinnati, Ohio and has participated in the Leaders in Development Executive Programme at the JFK School of Government, Harvard University.

    On Friday, October 19th, we are pleased to recognize Lloyd Robertson with the Canadian Club of Toronto’s Lifetime Achievement Award – an award that celebrates the lifelong efforts and leadership of distinguished Canadians. Joined by colleague and long time friend Brian Williams, the longest-running national television news anchor in North America will take your questions in a candid conversation about his life, career and how he got to where he is today. Lloyd Robertson For sixty years, Lloyd Robertson appeared on Canadian television screens as a journalist and an anchor, bringing us the major events of his day. The longest-serving TV news anchor in Canadian history, first on CBC and then on CTV, Robertson remains one of the most accomplished journalists of our time. His career is truly the story of Canada over the past half century, as he told us about key events like the moon landing, JFK’s assassination, Trudeaumania, Terry Fox’s run, the Montreal Massacre, 9/11 and the royal weddings. The Kind of Life It’s Been In The Kind of Life It’s Been, Robertson shares the inside story and the insights he has gained over his long career, from breaking into the business in his hometown of Stratford, Ontario, to joining the CBC, to his highly public departure for CTV to his career as senior editor of CTV News.     Canadians have been clear that their top priority for the federal government is economic growth and job creation. They also demand a pristine Canadian environment for future generations. Please join us and Canada’s Environment Minister, the Honourable Peter Kent, as he lays out his government’s priorities, and details some new environmental initiatives for Canadians. Peter Kent, Member of Parliament for Thornhill (Ontario), was first elected to the House of Commons in 2008. Prior to his election to the House of Commons, Mr. Kent was a broadcast journalist having spent more than 40 years working as a writer, reporter, producer, anchor and senior executive in Canada, the United States and around the world. Internationally, he covered stories that shaped the 20th century, including momentous events such as the Yom Kippur War, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. Mr. Kent has a long record of community service. He was a member of the board of ParticipACTION, the Ontario Cabinet of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Honest Reporting Canada, and The Accessible Channel. Mr. Kent has also served as a mentor with the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council and remains an active supporter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Toronto Conservatory of Music, the Canadian Opera Company, Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Mr. Kent was named Minister of the Environment in January 2011. Mr. Kent is married to Cilla and they have a daughter.
