    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Please join us on December 3, 2012 when the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador will be at our podium to share the vision behind the Muskrat Falls Hydro Project. In less than a decade, Newfoundland and Labrador has undergone a transformation that is unparalleled. With a comprehensive Energy Plan that charts a path to use the financial benefits of non-renewable resources to lay the foundation for a sustainable economy, Newfoundland and Labrador is using its vast resources in offshore oil and mining to take this once “have not” province and propel it forward as one of the fastest growing economies in North America. The Muskrat Falls Hydro Project will secure the power needed to capitalize on its energy warehouse and develop its unyielding potential. Kathy Dunderdale Kathy Dunderdale was sworn in as the 10th Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador on December 3, 2010, and on October 11, 2011, became the first female ever elected premier of the province, and the second woman elected to a premiership in Canada. Premier Dunderdale grew up in the town of Burin, Newfoundland and Labrador. She attended Memorial University and worked throughout the province in the fields of community development, communications, fisheries and social work. Premier Dunderdale’s legislative career rests on a solid background in municipal government. She started her public service as town councillor and eventually Deputy Mayor of Burin, leading into a multitude of leadership roles as, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities and Director of the Canadian Federation of Municipalities. Premier Dunderdale has also served as President of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador. Following her election to the House of Assembly as Member for Virginia Waters in 2003, Premier Dunderdale’s first Cabinet appointment was as Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and Minister Responsible for the Rural Secretariat. In October 2008 she was appointed as Deputy Premier, as well as Minister of Natural Resources, Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency, and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.

    Powering a Sustainable Economy

    Please join us on November 23 when Rob MacIsaac, President of Mohawk College and Chair of the Council of Presidents, outlines the leadership role that Ontario’s 24 publically funded colleges must play in helping to build a highly skilled 21st century workforce. Rob will offer his perspective on why a new framework for postsecondary education is urgently needed to meet the fast-changing needs and rising expectations of students, employers and taxpayers. Rob became the seventh President of Mohawk College in February 2009. Under Rob’s leadership, Mohawk has launched the largest campus renewal project in the college’s history, initiated the first environmental plan among Ontario colleges, established Mohawk as a leader in applied research in health and technology and forged a first-of-its-kind partnership with Sheridan College to co-locate programs. Rob currently serves as Chair of the Committee of Presidents – Colleges Ontario. Prior to joining Mohawk, Rob served as the first Chair of Metrolinx, the transportation authority responsible for planning and governing transportation in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA). Rob joined Metrolinx after serving as Mayor of the City of Burlington from 1997 to 2006. During his time in office, Rob became well-known for his regional approach and progressive growth management ideas for the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Rob completed his undergraduate degree in Economics at the University of Waterloo in 1984 and received a Law degree at the University of Western Ontario in 1987. He was called to the Bar in 1989.

    Unleashing the Potential of Ontario’s Colleges

    In celebration of the 100 year anniversary of the Grey Cup, we are delighted to host CFL Commissioner, Mark Cohon in conversation with Stephen Brunt, leading columnist and broadcaster at Rogers Sportsnet and author of 100 Grey Cups-This Is Our Game, during the week long festival of the Grey Cup in Toronto. Mark Cohon leads the Canadian Football League as it celebrates a storied history and builds a bright future. Since becoming the league’s twelfth commissioner in 2007, he has worked with the league’s Board of Governors and member teams to deliver strong attendance, expanding corporate partnerships, and tremendous television audiences. His tenure has been marked by a strong relationship with the league’s broadcast partner, TSN, and an emphasis on putting the fans at the centre of the league’s activities. Cohon was the first Commissioner in major sports to host an annual State of the League accountability session with fans, now a regular part of Grey Cup Week. Cohon, who recently signed a three-year extension of his contract as Commissioner of Canada’s league, is routinely listed among the most influential people in Canadian sport. He is a former executive with Major League Baseball International (MLB), where was Director of Corporate and Game Development, and the National Basketball Association, where he was recruited by Commissioner David Stern to serve as Director and Group Manager of International Marketing, Managing Director of NBA Europe, and Vice-President of Business Development. Former Chief Development Officer for Petopia, a multi-channel retailer in the United States, Cohon was the President and CEO of AudienceView, an event ticketing firm that grew under his leadership to claim such prominent international clients as the Toronto Blue Jays, the new Wembley Stadium, Churchill Downs and MGM Inc. Cohon is Chair of the Ontario Science Centre, one of the world’s largest centres devoted to science and its impact on our lives. He serves on the Board of World Wildlife Fund Canada and is a fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. A member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), and a graduate of Northwestern University in Chicago, Mark lives in Toronto with his wife Suzanne and their daughter.

    We are a nation with an abundance of resources in almost every energy sector possible but we have no national strategy to develop them in a sustainable way, or in a way that would ensure a deeply shared prosperity. Please join us on November 15th as Liberal Leader Bob Rae discusses the clear need for national leadership. He will also address a number of questions that federal leaders of all parties have to ask themselves when dealing with one of the largest priorities facing our nation today. A lifetime of public service Over a career that has spanned three decades, including serving as Ontario’s 21st Premier from 1990 to 1995, Bob Rae has worked at the highest levels of government in Canada, and has been elected eleven times to federal and provincial parliaments. From 1996 to 2007, he worked as a partner in the law firm, Goodmans LLP, one of Canada’s leading international law firms. His clients included companies, trade unions, charitable and non-governmental organizations, and governments themselves. During this period, Bob Rae was appointed a special advisor to the Canadian Minister of Public Safety on the Air India bombing of 1985. His report, Lessons to be Learned was published in November of 2005. He also completed a review of Ontario’s Postsecondary School Education for the Ontario Provincial government. The resulting 2005 report entitled Ontario: A Leader in Learning led to significant policy and budgetary changes. Bob Rae has proudly served the people of Toronto Centre in Ottawa as their Member of Parliament since March 2008, and was twice named “Best Orator” by Macleans Magazine in its annual survey of parliamentarians. Until recently, he served as Foreign Affairs Critic for the Liberal Party of Canada. In June 2011, he became interim Liberal Leader. Throughout his political career Bob Rae has put the interests of people first, and he carries that guiding principle with him today. A family man, author and fisherman Born and raised in Ottawa, Bob Rae has a B.A. and an LLB from the University of Toronto and was a Rhodes Scholar from Ontario in 1969. He obtained a B.Phil degree from Oxford University in 1971 and was named a Queen’s Counsel in 1984. Bob Rae lives in Toronto with his wife Arlene Perly Rae. He and Arlene have three daughters, Judith, Lisa and Eleanor. He has written four books, published by McClelland & Stewart: From Protest to Power: Reflections on a Life in Politics (1997) The Three Questions: Prosperity and the Public Good (1999) Canada in the Balance (2006) Exporting Democracy: The Risks and Rewards of Pursuing a Good Idea (2010) A former chairman of the Royal Conservatory and Toronto Symphony, Bob Rae is an avid music lover. He enjoys playing tennis and golfing, and is happiest when out fishing on the lake at his cottage near Portland, Ontario. Bob Rae was appointed to Her Majesty’s Privy Council for Canada in 1998, was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Ontario in 2004. He has received numerous honorary degrees and awards from Canadian and foreign universities, colleges, and organizations.
