    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    In the wake of the falling revenues from Alberta oil, tough, but thoughtful decisions are required to protect Alberta’s future growth. Join Premier Alison Redford as she discusses her plan to guide Alberta confidently forward. Alison Redford was elected leader of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party on October 1, 2011 and sworn-in as Alberta’s 14th premier on October 7, 2011. Alison was born on March 7, 1965 in Kitimat, British Columbia and grew up all over Canada and overseas before settling in Calgary as a teenager. She graduated from Bishop Carroll High School in Calgary and completed her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan College of Law in 1988. Alison and her husband, Glen Jermyn, have one daughter, Sarah. Alison has been actively involved in both provincial and national politics since the 1980s. She served as Senior Policy Advisor to the Right Honourable Joe Clark when he was Secretary of State for External Affairs, and later worked in the Prime Minister’s Office. In this capacity, she organized a series of national consultations facilitating public input on federal white papers concerned with foreign affairs and defense. In Parliament, she was also the Principal Legislative Advisor to the Secretary of State for External Affairs. Returning home to Calgary from Ottawa, Alison articled at Rooney Prentice. She then worked in a small partnership before opening her own law firm, gaining practical experience as a small business owner. Throughout the 1990s, Alison worked as a technical advisor on constitutional and legal reform issues in Africa for the European Union, the Commonwealth Secretariat and both the Canadian and Australian governments. Her work in Africa focused on human rights litigation, education programs and policy reform initiatives. In 2005, Alison was appointed by the Secretary- General of the United Nations as one of four International Election Commissioners to administer Afghanistan’s first parliamentary elections. She also served as an advisor to the Privy Council Office on Canada’s future involvement in Afghanistan. Over the course of her career, Alison has also undertaken assignments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Namibia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and the Philippines. Before seeking elected office in Alberta, she managed a judicial training and legal reform project for the Ministry of Justice and the Supreme People’s Court in Vietnam. Alison Redford was elected MLA for the constituency of Calgary-Elbow on March 3, 2008 and named Minister of Justice and Attorney General on March 12, 2008. In this role, she led the Safe Communities Secretariat. In January 2010, she was also named political minister for Calgary. As Premier, Alison Redford seeks to improve quality of life for all Albertans, while working to build a province that is prosperous, fair and inclusive.

    Join the Honourable Dwight Duncan, Minister of Finance, Minister of Government Services and Deputy Premier of Ontario as he presents an update on Ontario’s economy and finances. Dwight Duncan is the MPP for Windsor – Tecumseh. He was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 1995. He was appointed as Minister of Finance and Chair of the Management Board of Cabinet in 2005, and as Deputy Premier in October 2011. Duncan has previously served as Minister of Energy and Chair of Cabinet as well as Government House Leader. As Minister of Energy, Duncan brought meaningful change to Ontario’s electricity sector, fostering a culture of conservation, while ensuring a reliable, sustainable, diverse and affordable power supply. Duncan is a lifelong resident of Windsor. From 1987 to 1995, he served as an administrator at Brentwood Recovery Centre, Canada’s largest alcohol and drug recovery centre. He sat on Windsor City Council from 1988 to 1994. A graduate of McGill University and the University of Windsor, Duncan has degrees in economics and commerce, as well as an MBA. He has one son, Sean.

    Deb Matthews was elected to the Ontario Legislature by the people of London North Centre in 2003, and re-elected in 2007 and 2011. Following her re-election, she was appointed Minister of Children and Youth Services and Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues. In October 2009, she was appointed to her current position as Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. As Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, she led a major initiative to significantly reduce the cost of prescription generic drugs for all Ontarians. As well, she spearheaded the unanimous passage of the Excellent Care for All Act (ECFA). This act is transforming our healthcare system by striving for higher quality care and ensuring better value for taxpayer investments. It has been said ECFA could be the single most important piece of health care legislation since the creation of our publicly-funded health care system. As Chair of the Cabinet Committee on Poverty Reduction, Deb led the development of Breaking the Cycle, an ambitious strategy to raise the standard of living for all children and reduce the number of children living in poverty by 25% in 5 years and is recognized as being a driving force behind the historic Ontario Child Benefit. She also introduced the Poverty Reduction Act, which legislated an ongoing commitment to poverty reduction. Deb was honoured by the Ontario Municipal Social Services Association with the first Champion of Human Services award in recognition of her work in reducing poverty. Throughout her life, Deb has been actively involved in community organizations. She served as President of Big Sisters of London, and has volunteered with organizations including the Thames Valley Children’s Centre, the Salvation Army, Orchestra London, and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Her annual community book drive has collected tens of thousands of books destined for the eager eyes of young readers. Her professional experience includes time spent in the construction industry, fundraising for the Boys and Girls Club of London, and teaching at the University of Western Ontario where she was twice honoured with a place on the University Students’ Council Teaching Honour Roll while completing her Ph.D. in Social Demography. Deb was born in London where she has lived her entire life. She has three children and four grandchildren.
