    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

The Changing Face of Leadership in the GTA May 22, 2013
    Show notes

On Wednesday, May 22nd, please join us at a special anniversary celebration of DiverseCity as the leading Canadian pollster Nik Nanos shares the findings of the first public opinion survey on leadership diversity, followed by a panel discussion with DiverseCity Co-Chairs Ratna Omidvar and John Tory hosted by CBC Radio’s Matt Galloway. It’s been five years since the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance (CivicAction) and Maytree came together to shine the spotlight on leadership diversity. DiverseCity’s early research exposed a critical gap: our leaders – the decision-makers, influence shapers and role models – did not look like the rest of the city region. The first Counts report showed that in a place where close to half the population is made up of visible minorities, only 13% of those who had succeeded in rising to the top were diverse. Since then, hundreds of organizations and thousands of leaders have come together to change the face of leadership. Collectively, DiverseCity’s efforts are paving the way to accelerate prosperity across the GTA. Diversity in leadership has been linked with powerful social and economic outcomes – undeniable opportunities for a metropolis defined by the diversity of its population. Now it’s time to find out what residents think about this issue. Does the gap at the top matter to people on the street? What do they think are the benefits of a leadership that reflects the population? And what can we expect for the Toronto of tomorrow? Please join the growing community of leaders and champions for the release of DiverseCity’s latest insights at this special anniversary celebration.

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston Apr 26, 2013
    Show notes

When the Right Honourable David Johnston was installed as the 28th governor general of Canada on October 1, 2010, his remarks focused on ‘A Smart and Caring Nation: A Call to Service.’ He has since travelled widely across Canada, speaking with Canadians about the importance of giving, learning, innovation and family, and asking them what they will contribute to Canada as we approach our country’s 150th birthday, in 2017. His Excellency was born and raised in northern Ontario. His twin passions for learning and sport led to an undergraduate degree at Harvard as well as his induction, as a hockey player, into Harvard’s Athletic Hall of Fame; to law degrees at the universities of Cambridge and Queen’s; and to a lifelong dedication to higher education. During his 44-year academic career, he served as dean of the Law School at the University of Western Ontario, in London; as principal of McGill University, in Montréal; and as president of the University of Waterloo. He served on many provincial and federal task forces and committees, as well as on the boards of a number of companies. He married his high school sweetheart, Mrs. Sharon Johnston, who trained as a physical and occupational therapist, and ran a successful horse training centre for 12 years. Together, they have five daughters and nine grandchildren.

    Show notes

Please join us on April 17th when we welcome Mr. B. Muthuraman, Chairman, Tata International Ltd and Vice Chairman, Tata Steel Ltd, to our podium to discuss India’s economy and how Indian companies such as Tata look at Canada. According to a recent Canada-India joint study group report, Canada is one of the world’s most dynamic economies and a destination of choice for foreign investment. Furthermore, Canada’s stable and well-capitalized financial system, which was ranked by the World Economic Forum as the soundest in the world, is supported by one of the world’s most effective national regulatory frameworks. These characteristics make Canada a prime destination for foreign direct investment, especially for Indian companies. In fact, India’s foreign direct investment into Canada is on a sharp upward trend and there will continue to be unique opportunities for Indian companies to lead the way in forging a stronger relationship with Canada. Drawing on Tata Steel’s $5 billion investment in Quebec-Labrador, which is expected to provide more than 5,000 construction jobs and 1,200 permanent jobs to the region, Mr. Muthuraman will discuss the considerable opportunity for Indian companies to invest in Canada in the years ahead. Mr. Muthuraman B Muthuraman is vice chairman of Tata Steel and chairman of Tata International. He serves on the boards of Bosch, Tata Industries and Strategic Energy Technology Systems. He is also president of the Confederation of Indian Industry, chairman of the board of governors of the National Institute of Technology (Jamshedpur), and a member of the Business Advisory Council of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). Mr Muthuraman began his career at Tata Steel in 1966 and has held various positions at the company including vice president of marketing and sales and vice president of cold rolling mill projects. He was appointed executive director in 2000, managing director in 2001 and non-executive vice chairman in 2009. Mr Muthuraman has a bachelor’s degree in technology in metallurgical engineering from IIT Madras and a master’s degree in business administration from XLRI Jamshedpur. He also completed the advanced management programme at the European Centre for Executive Development, France, and the leadership programme at INSEAD, France. He has been bestowed with an honorary doctorate from Loyola University, Chicago.
