    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Please join us on December 6th as The Honourable John Milloy takes the podium at the Canadian Club of Toronto to discuss Ontario’s new Open Government initiative. Governments around the world are prioritizing open data and open information to promote innovation and strengthen their relationship with the people they serve. Premier Kathleen Wynne and Minister John Milloy have recently launched Ontario’s Open Government initiative, emphasizing citizen dialogue and engagement to create informed policy and encourage participation. The Hon. John Milloy was first elected Member of Provincial Parliament for Kitchener Centre in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007 and 2011. He currently serves as Government House Leader, a particularly important role during a minority government. He was also appointed Minister of Government Services in May 2013. He served as Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, Minister of Research and Innovation and Minister of Community and Social Services. John’s political interest began at age 13 when he worked as a Queen’s Park page and continued as he worked in political offices at both the provincial and federal level. From 1997 to 2002, John served as Legislative Assistant to Prime Minister Jean Chretien. John holds a BA (Honours) in History from Carleton University, a Master’s degree from the London School of Economics and a doctorate in Modern History from the University of Oxford where he was a Commonwealth Scholar. John is past Director of Public Affairs for the Centre for International Governance Innovation and has written on both international history and governance in the information age. ***

Mr. Manley is a former Deputy Prime Minister of Canada and has served in the federal Cabinet as Minister of Industry, Minister of Finance and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

    Please join us on October 28th as Toronto Police Chief, William Blair, takes the Canadian Club podium to discuss the important topic of policing in our city. William Blair was appointed Chief of the Toronto Police Service on April 26, 2005. The City of Toronto is a vibrant city covering 636 square kilometres with a diverse population of more than 2,600,000 people. The Toronto Police Service employs over 5500 police officers and 2200 civilian employees, making it the largest municipal police service in Canada and one of the largest in North America. Chief Blair started his 35-plus year policing career as a beat officer in downtown Toronto, and continued with assignments in drug enforcement, organized crime units, and major criminal investigations. Promoted to the senior ranks of the Service, his postings included Divisional Commander, Community Policing Programs, and Detective Operations, responsible for all specialized investigative units. Chief Blair holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Toronto with dual disciplines of Economics and Criminology (1981), a Certificate in Law Enforcement Administration from the University of Toronto (1983) and a Certificate in Criminal Justice from the University of Virginia (1990). He is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy (1990), the Police Leadership Program of the University of Toronto, Rotman School of Business Management (2002) and the National Executive Institute (2006). Chief Blair is a member of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) and has previously served as the President of the OACP. He is a member of the Criminal Intelligence Service of Ontario (CISO) Governing Body Executive and a member of the Executive Committee for the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU). Chief Blair is a member of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP), and has previously served as President. He has previously served as Co-Chair of the CACP Counter-Terrorism and National Security Committee and the Organized Crime Committee. He is a member of the National Coordinating Committee for Organized Crime and a member of the Executive Committee for Criminal Intelligence Service Canada (CISC). He is also a Member At Large on the Board of Directors of the Police Executive Research Foundation (PERF). He has served as Chair of the Public Safety Emergency Preparedness Canada Audit Committee from May 2009 to April 2013. Chief Blair is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), previously serving on the Executive Committee and is a member of the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCC), currently serving as the Second Vice President on the Board of Directors.
