    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

Toronto is Canada’s economic hub, as well as is home to over 5 millionpeople. But due to our growth, and dated transportation infrastructure, we are now faced with the challenge of a generation. Our transit infrastructure is decades behind. Congestion and traffic is paralyzing our city. Torontonians cannot get home to their families, businesses are being impacted by their employees not being able to get to and from work, and companies just can’t get their goods to their destinations in a timely period. We need to get our city moving – to make Toronto more liveable, affordable and functional. On the first day of his campaign, John Tory announced he will bring transit relief. It will be his first priority as Mayor. On May 27th, John Tory will outline his plan to get Toronto moving. Tory will talk about his transit plan, and how as Mayor he will build the much needed infrastructure needed to catch up with our growing population.

In 2013, Canadians mailed more than one billion fewer pieces of mail than they did in 2006. Digital alternatives are rapidly replacing traditional mail and that trend will accelerate. As a result, people are using Canada Post differently than they have in the past. Canadians will continue to rely on their national postal system, but the content and makeup of what they receive will differ from what it is today. Canada Post President and CEO Deepak Chopra will discuss what the postal service of the future will look like, and how the company is boldly transforming to meet the changing needs of Canadians.

    Philanthropy 3.0 Apr 24, 2014
    Show notes

In the last few decades, and in this increasing complex world, we have seen a seismic shift in the traditional definition of “philanthropy”. New challenges call for new solutions and new ways of thinking and acting. This shift has pushed us beyond traditional “charity” models to a more “evolved philanthropy” that seeks to address social problems at their root causes with sustainable impact. For funders, this means new models for Not-for-Profit engagement and partnership. It means a move from programs to collaboration; from “donation” to “investment”; from short term “fix” to sustainable change. And, importantly, to a broader view of community with a focus in outcomes that align to social and economic development, and environmental responsibility. For the Not-for-Profit sector, the ground is shifting. NFPs are engaging in new ways with funding partners – through partnerships, ecosystems and networks that focus the collective on a clear goal. With traditional sources of funding on the decline, and increasing pressure on the sector to provide solutions, new models are emerging – Social Innovation, Social Entrepreneurship and Social Finance. Resource strapped NFPs have unique challenges in adapting to this new world order – but must change to thrive. Our panelists will examine the new world order of Philanthropy 3.0 and, through case histories, cite examples of breakthrough collaborations that define the models for success. They will examine the opportunities for the NFP sector with a view to the significant and real challenges in extending reach, scale and impact.
