    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

A Conversation on the State of Hockey in Canada

What is the national conversation on Asia? How do Canadian businesses stay competitive in a more Asia-centred world? Please join us on June 11th as President and CEO of the Asian Pacific Foundation of Canada, Yuen Pau Woo, presents the results of APF Canada’s 2014 National Opinion Poll: Canadian Views on Asia and speaks on the progress made by APF in building stronger relations with Asian countries over the last six years. With the growing recognition across the country that Asia is, in the words of Foreign Minister John Baird, “not an option, but an imperative”, Woo will also provide a reflection on the Foundation’s “National Conversation on Asia” and the mixed messages of optimism, fear, and puzzlement that many Canadians have expressed about trans-Pacific relations. The easy phase of building stronger ties with Asia is over. If Asia is to be an imperative for Canada, a national effort will be needed for Canadians to invest in Asian knowledge and skills. As Woo completes his final term as CEO he is also calling for forward-looking, non-partisan leadership to come from the business community, civil society, and the political class to ensure these investments do not stand idle. Mr. Yuen Pau Woo is President and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. He is a thought leader on contemporary Asian affairs and trans-Pacific relations. He has served on the Standing Committee of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council, and as an advisor/consultant to the World Bank, APEC, the OECD, Asian Development Bank, the Shanghai WTO Affairs Consultation Centre, and the Canadian Ditchley Foundation. He is also on the Global Council of the Asia Society, a member of the Greater Vancouver Advisory Board for the Salvation Army, and a board member of the Public Policy Forum, the Vancouver Academy of Music, and the Mosaic Institute. Mr. Woo has previously worked for the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation. He is on the editorial board of Pacific Affairs. As one of Canada’s most respected analysts on Asia, Mr. Woo is frequently consulted by senior officials, business leaders, and civil society organizations. Mr. Woo is a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award, in recognition of his contribution to Canada-Asia relations. The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada is a not-for-profit think-tank based in Vancouver and has been a leader in research and analysis on Canada’s relations with Asia since its foundation in 1984. Olivia Chow, running to be our new mayor, has run a campaign rich in specific proposals. Already, she’s released clear, costed policy ideas to get people moving right now; support children and families; and create jobs. Olivia will speak about the imperative of now in addressing the City of Toronto’s biggest challenges. Olivia Chow has been a Member of Parliament, city councillor and school trustee. She’s a grandmother and daughter. And she has a proven track record engaging people to build stronger families and better neighbourhoods. She moved to Toronto from Hong Kong in 1970 when she was 13, working two jobs to help her family make ends meet. After graduating university, Olivia taught English as a second language and worked to help newcomers settle in the city. In 1985, she was elected to the school board and earned a reputation as a champion for children. She married Jack Layton in 1988, and helped raise Mike and Sarah Layton. She was elected to the former Metro Council in 1991 and 1994, and to the new city of Toronto’s council in 1997, 2000 and 2003. Former Mayor Mel Lastman appointed her to the budget committee, where she helped deliver five straight balanced budgets. Mayor Lastman also named her the city’s first child and youth advocate, where she delivered better kids’ dental services, student nutrition programs and youth safety initiatives. She was key in getting the 911 service to work in 140 languages. In 2006, Olivia was elected as an MP. A strong voice for federal investment in our infrastructure, she earned a reputation for working with MPs from all parties. She was re-elected in 2008 and 2011. Olivia lives with her mother, Ho Sze, and helps care for her father, Wilson Wai Sun. She has two granddaughters, Beatrice and Solace. In 2014, her best-selling memoir, My Journey, was published. Recognition for being one of our city’s most effective leaders include a Toronto Sun readers’ choice gold award for being a Top Torontonian, being named Canada’s Woman of the Year by Consumer Choice and best City Councillor nine times by Now Magazine.
