    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

Since 1992, The Canadian Club of Toronto has presented its Canadian(s) of the Year Award to distinguished Canadians whose efforts and example have improved the lives of others and benefited us as a nation. On Wednesday, November 26th, Canada’s podium of record is proud to recognize Milos Raonic, Canada’s top ranking professional tennis player, as our 2014 Canadian of the Year award recipient. Milos Raonic is the highest-ranked Canadian tennis player in the Open Era after becoming the first from his country to break the Top 10 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on 12th August 2013. Born in Podgorica, Montenegro in 1990, Milos and his family relocated to Toronto in 1994. He currently resides in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Parents are Dusan and Vesna (both engineers); sister, Jelena and brother, Momir. Milos began playing tennis at age nine and played his first tennis tournament at age 10 in Toronto. When he was 16, he grew into one of Canada’s top juniors and was invited to be one of the first to join Tennis Canada’s National Training Centre in Montreal. Milos spent three years training with Canada’s top juniors in Montreal. He became one of three Canadians to reach the fourth round at a Grand Slam championship when he reached the last 16 as a qualifier at the 2011 Australian Open (l. to Ferrer), when he was just 20 years old. He was named as Newcomer of the Year in the 2011 ATP World Tour Awards presented by Moët & Chandon after jumping from No. 156 in the Emirates ATP Rankings at the start of the season to No. 31 on 14 November 2011. Milos has won six ATP World Tour titles and became the first homegrown finalist at the Canadian Masters since Robert Bedard in 1958 when he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in August 2013. He is coached by former World No. 3 Ivan Ljubicic and Riccardo Piatti and works with trainer Dalibor Sirola and physio Claudio Zimaglia.

The Ontario healthcare system, as it currently stands, is in a state of flux. Questions such as “is patient-centered care fuelled by innovation achievable?” and “is a fragmented and unconnected healthcare system inevitable?” equally reflect today’s reality. This critical juncture represents a window of opportunity for Ontario to better serve patients, improve our healthcare system, and make it more sustainable. Developments in technology and entrepreneurial leadership have the potential to positively transform our system. And yet, we remain in danger of creating a healthcare system that is more fragmented and disconnected than ever. It’s vital to ensure that Ontario has a “one patient, one team, one care plan” policy. Getting there will take political and visionary leadership at every level. Getting there is essential to safeguarding the future of our healthcare and ensuring sustained benefits from our publically funded system are delivered to all Ontarians. Bio Dr. Brown is a founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN), one of the largest and most active integrated telemedicine networks in the world. Dr. Brown has won numerous awards for his work in Telemedicine, including most recently, a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award for his contributions to health care in Canada. In 2010, he was chosen as one of 25 Living Transformational Canadians by a national media panel sponsored by the Globe and Mail, CTV and Le Presse. He currently sits on the board of OntarioMD and is the President of the American Telemedicine Association. An emergency physician who studied mathematics and engineering before embarking on his medical career, Dr. Brown is a passionate advocate for telemedicine as a tool to improve access to care, quality of care and the sustainability of health care systems.

Canada’s Arctic region has always fascinated Canadians. Mary Simon knows this well. Throughout her almost 5 decades of leadership on Canadian Arctic issues she has witnessed the emergence of the Arctic as one of Canada’s most promising economic regions. This unprecedented economic activity has opened up new challenges for communities in the North, not the least of which is how Inuit can fully participate in the opportunities emerging at their doorstep. The answer, in Mary Simon’s view, lies not solely in training, but with a focus on closing gaps in the education systems, to enable more young people to graduate. Hear from Mary about her uniquely Canadian journey with education and how she has arrived at an understanding of reconciliation through a 21st century vision of education in Canada’s Arctic. Biography Mary Simon, OC, QC, comes from Kuujjuaq, Nunavik and was born in Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik (Arctic Quebec). She is the recent past president of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the National Inuit Organization (2006-2012). She has just completed her term as Chairperson of the National Committee on Inuit Education with a mandate to implement a comprehensive national strategy, aimed at improving Inuit educational standards and achievements (2012-2014). She has advanced critical social, economic and human rights issues for Canadian Inuit regionally, nationally and internationally. Over four decades she has held senior leadership positions including, President of Makivik Corporation (the Land Claims Organization for Inuit of Nunavik), President of the Inuit Circumpolar Council, Canadian Ambassador for Circumpolar Affairs as well as to the Kingdom of Denmark. She is the Founding Chair of the Arctic Children and Youth Foundation. Ms. Simon led Canada’s negotiations during the creation of the eight nation Arctic Council in the mid 1990’s. The Arctic Council includes the Indigenous Peoples of the Circumpolar Region as Permanent Participants. She is an Officer of the Order of Canada, Recipient of the National Order of Quebec, the Gold Order of Greenland, The National Aboriginal Achievement Award, the Gold Order of the Canadian Geographic Society, The Symons Medal, the Governor General’s Northern Award.
