    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

In an era where societies must be more interdependent, how do we as a society renew our commitment to federalism to face the challenges of the future? Please join us on Friday, October 3rd when Mr. Benoît Pelletier, Quebec’s Minister Responsible for Canadian Intergovernmental Affairs, Aboriginal Affairs and Francophones within Canada, discusses how managing interdependency and tighter cooperation among societies are the key to making federalism relevant and attractive to Canada. Minister Pelletier will outline how Canada must use its diversity and social pluralism to face the challenges of the future. This will not only make Canada stronger and more united, but it will also enhance its reputation worldwide. He will also discuss how Quebecers are now, more than ever, ready to contribute to the evolution of Canada and, in doing so, seek greater respect for and acknowledgement of its identity within the federation. Mr. Benoît Pelletier has a Doctor of Laws from Université Paris I (Pantheon-Sorbonne) and from Université Aix-Marseille III. He specializes in constitutional law. Elected into Quebec government since 1998, he was re-elected on April 18, 2007 and appointed Minister Responsible for Canadian Intergovernmental Affairs, Aboriginal Affairs and Francophones within Canada.

A New Consensus for Building Canada's Competitiveness in the 21st Century

Dr. Chad Gaffield Sep 28, 2008
    Show notes

Canada has traditionally relied on natural resources and applied technologies for competitive advantage. But increasingly, it is our creativity, research and innovation that drive Canada’s economic prosperity. In an era when human capital is becoming priceless, how can we stimulate original thinking and new behaviours to build a successful 21st century? Please join us on September 29th when Dr. Chad Gaffield, President of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, proposes a new paradigm for competitiveness in the 21st century and takes questions from the audience. Dr. Chad Gaffield, one of Canada’s foremost historians, was appointed President of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) in September, 2006. He came to SSHRC from the University of Ottawa, where he was the founding director of the Institute of Canadian Studies. He is a former president of the Canadian Historical Association and the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. He is best known for his reinterpretation of major historical events in the making of modern Canada as expressions of micro-historical transformations – changes occurring in the lives of everyday people. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada is an independent federal government agency that funds university-based research and graduate training through national peer-review competitions. SSHRC also partners with public and private sector organizations on research and the development of better policies and practices in key areas of Canada’s social, cultural and economic life.

Research from Catalyst shows that, on average, companies with more women on corporate boards achieve higher return on shareholder equity, sales and invested capital, in comparison to companies with fewer or no women board directors. Yet women only represent 13 per cent of corporate board directors; and over 40 per cent of FP500 companies have no female representation in the boardroom. Join us on September 22nd when the Canadian Club of Toronto welcomes Deborah Gillis, Vice President of Catalyst, North America, to discuss the findings of a recent study of women directors in FP500 companies. Ms. Gillis will present and answer questions as to why and how gender balance in the boardroom leads to better performance in the global marketplace. She will also offer insights into how Canadian corporations perform relative to their global counterparts when it comes to having women in senior positions on their boards and on their executive teams. Founded in 1962, Catalyst is the leading nonprofit membership organization working globally to build inclusive workplaces and expand opportunities for women and business. With offices in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and the support of more than 370 member organizations, Catalyst is the premier resource for research and advice about women at work. Catalyst annually honors exemplary organizational initiatives that promote women’s advancement with the Catalyst Award.
