    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

Ontario Ministers Series 2008 David Caplan was appointed Minister of Health and Long-Term Care in June 2008. Prior to that, he served as the first Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal, a new ministry created to lead the modernization of the province’s infrastructure and to plan for future population and economic growth. Mr. Caplan has introduced a number of ‘firsts’ for the province. They include a long-term $30 billion plus infrastructure investment strategy, which has set Ontario on the road to an infrastructure renaissance – expanding and building new hospitals, schools, colleges and universities, and transit and transportation systems. Under his leadership, the Government of Ontario won three prestigious urban planning awards recognizing the first visionary Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe – a comprehensive, 25-year strategy to maximize the benefits of growth and maintain a high quality of life for the fastest growing urban region in Canada. In 2005, Minister Caplan also assumed the oversight of key government agencies, including the Ontario Realty Corporation, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation. Mr. Caplan was first elected to the provincial legislature in a September 1997 by-election in the former riding of Oriole. After the 1999 general election, he returned to the provincial legislature for the new riding of Don Valley East. He was then re-elected in 2003 and 2007. Prior to entering provincial politics, Mr. Caplan was elected to two terms on the North York Board of Education and also served on the Metro Toronto School Board. As a school board trustee, he served as finance committee chair and budget chief where he introduced the first zero per cent tax increase budget in more than 20 years. Before his work in education, Mr. Caplan was vice-president of an international nonferrous metal recycling firm from 1989 to 1992. After attending the University of Western Ontario, he sold commercial real estate from 1985 to 1989. Mr. Caplan and his wife Leigh have two sons, Benjamin and Jacob.

Mental illness affects as many as 1 in 5 Canadians over the course of their lives. Despite its ubiquity in families across Canada, understanding and acceptance lag far behind the reality of the numbers. As well as coping with the disease itself, people with mental illness also suffer shame, stigma and discrimination. How are views and treatment of mental illness affected by biology, psychology, and modern social-cultural realities? Can efforts to combat stigma lead to improved attitudes and outcomes? Please join us on Monday, November 17th when two renowned psychiatrists from Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) – Dr. David Goldbloom and Dr. Kwame McKenzie — sit down with award-winning Globe and Mail columnist Margaret Wente to address these challenging questions. Dr. David Goldbloom is a psychiatrist and Senior Medical Advisor at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, a Professor at the University of Toronto, and Vice-Chair of the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Dr. Kwame McKenzie is a psychiatrist and Deputy Director of the Schizophrenia Program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, a Senior Scientist in CAMH’s Social Equity and Health Research Program and a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Margaret Wente, one of Canada’s leading columnists, writes for The Globe and Mail and is a two-time winner of the National Newspaper Award for column-writing — the only journalist in Canada to hold that distinction.

    Show notes

Ontario Ministers Series 2008 George Smitherman was first elected to serve the diverse communities of downtown Toronto in 1999, but his interest in politics was sown over 20 years earlier. Inspired by the life and politics of Pierre Trudeau, he gained experience at all three levels of government, working in support of several senior political leaders. From his home base in Toronto’s gay community, where he owned and operated a small business for nearly a decade, Smitherman launched his campaign for public office. He is Ontario’s first openly gay MPP and cabinet minister. He married his partner, Christopher, in the summer of 2007 north of Elliot Lake, Ontario. They live in Cabbagetown. In the community, Smitherman is well known for his advocacy in areas such as housing, heritage preservation, community economic development, protection of pension rights, efforts to combat guns and drugs, and human rights issues. Smitherman was appointed Minister of Energy and Infrastructure in June 2008. He previously served as Minister of Health and Long-Term Care since 2003. As the longest-serving Ontario Minister of Health in the last quarter century, Smitherman strongly led key McGuinty government initiatives, including the effort to reduce wait times and enhance access to nurses and doctors.
