    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

Right after presenting the Grey Cup to the winning team at this year’s big game in Montreal, Toronto’s Mark Cohon returns home for what promises to be one of our most entertaining luncheons of the year. Cohon, the Canadian Football League’s dynamic young commissioner, is joined by colourful TSN Personality Michael Landsberg for an upbeat discussion of “our league”, its unique place in Canadian culture, and the debate that’s raging about its future. Cohon is an entrepreneur, an experienced sports executive, and a passionate Canadian, who has worked for Major League Baseball and the NBA, as well as being the current chair of the Ontario Science Centre. Landsberg has been host of the highly acclaimed sports debate show Off The Record since its debut in 1997. Together, they’ll tackle the subject “Why the CFL Matters.”

Rt. Hon. Paul Martin Nov 24, 2008
    Show notes

In partnership with the Couchiching Institute. Please join us on Monday, November 24th when Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, Former Prime Minister of Canada, discusses and takes questions from the audience regarding his new prime ministerial memoir, Hell or High Water, My Life in and out of Politics. Paul Martin was the Prime Minister we never really knew – in this memoir he emerges as a fascinating flesh and blood man, still working hard to make a better world. Great events and world figures stud this book, which is firm but polite as it sets the record straight, and is full of wry humour and self-deprecating stories. Far from ending with his defeat in 2006, the book deals with his continuing passions, such as the plight of Canada’s aboriginal peoples and the protection of the vital Congo Basin rainforest. The book also acknowledges Paul Martin as a visionary of G8 reform and a leading mind of global financial architecture. In fact, the policies and concepts he initiated in these areas continue to be acknowledged both as necessary and ahead of their time. This is an idealistic, interesting book that reveals the Paul Martin we never knew. It’s a pleasure to meet him. Paul Martin was born in Windsor in 1938 and educated at the University of Ottawa and the University of Toronto. In 1965, he earned his LL.B and married Sheila, with whom he had three sons. After a successful business career as Chairman and CEO of Canada Steamship Lines he entered politics as a Liberal M.P. in 1988. After running for the leadership of the party he became minister of finance from 1993 till 2001, becoming prime minister in 2003. He resigned as party leader after the 2006 election, but continues to work in the public sphere.
