    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

The Honourable Jason Kenney Oct 17, 2014
    Show notes

The speech will take place at 12:10pm with lunch service to follow at 12:55pm. In today’s increasingly competitive economy, Canadians are finding it difficult to match their skills to employment opportunities. We find ourselves in a paradox of too many Canadians without jobs in an economy of too many jobs without Canadians. Canada’s Minister of Employment and Social Development, The Honourable Jason Kenney, will discuss the Government of Canada’s efforts to ensure that Canadians have the skills needed in today’s workforce. Bio Jason Kenney was born in Ontario and raised in Saskatchewan, where he graduated from Notre Dame College. He did undergraduate studies in philosophy at the University of San Francisco. Mr Kenney served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, prior to his election to the House of Commons in 1997 as Member of Parliament for Calgary Southeast. He has been re-elected five times, most recently with 76% of the vote. He is a former Chairman of the House of Commons Subcommittee on International Human Rights, and served in several positions in Opposition, including as Finance Critic and Deputy House Leader. Mr Kenney became Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Harper in 2006, and Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity in 2007. As Canada’s longest-serving Minister of Citizenship and Immigration from 2008 to 2013, Mr. Kenney implemented comprehensive reforms to Canada’s immigration, refugee and citizenship programs, leading the National Post to call him “perhaps Canada’s best immigration minister ever.” In July, 2013 he was appointed Minister of Employment and Social Development, with a mandate to ensure that Canadians are well-prepared to participate fully in the labour market of the future. He chairs the Cabinet Committee on Operations, is the Regional Minister for Southern Alberta, and sits on the Cabinet Committees for Social Affairs and Planning and Priorities. Mr Kenney has been voted the “best overall” and “hardest working” MP by his colleagues in Maclean’s Magazine’s annual survey of parliamentarians.

Toronto may be on a roll. But unless we fix our chronic problems, all our momentum and liveability will fade. So we have to act now, act together, and act because we love our city. Join us as Rahul K. Bhardwaj, President & CEO of the Toronto Foundation, reveals the results of Toronto’s Vital Signs® Report 2014, the annual snapshot on the quality of life in our city. Described by Toronto Life as “the most reliable assessment on the state of the city in circulation”, the Toronto’s Vital Signs® Report provides a snapshot of the trends in our city, highlighting progress we should be proud of and challenges that need to be addressed to improve quality of life in Toronto. It is a powerful springboard for civic engagement and philanthropic investment used by residents, businesses, community organizations, universities and colleges, and governments. In fact, it now reaches more than one million people in the GTA and has been incorporated by local universities and colleges into courses that reach more than 10,000 students. The model of Vital Signs® has also been adopted by 35 other Community Foundations across Canada and 14 communities across four continents. Mr. Bhardwaj is also the current Chair of the Board of Directors of Community Foundations of Canada. Formerly a corporate lawyer, he was also Vice President of the Toronto 2008 Olympic Bid. More recently, Rahul was Chair of the 2012 Ontario Summer Games, the first multi-sport games to be held in Toronto and is currently the Co-Chair of TO2015 IGNITE, a program of the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games. His dedication to our communities led him to be awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and for the National Post to proclaim him one of the “Next Generation of Toronto Civic Leaders”. Rahul was twice named one of “The 50 Most Influential” people in the city by Toronto Life.

    Innovation Panel Sep 26, 2014
    Show notes

Canada’s pace of innovation has been a slow crawl for more than a decade. Our country runs the risk of being left in the wake of competing nations that are creating a tidal wave of double-digit growth in productivity and efficiency through a strong foundation of innovation. Communications solution leader Cisco Systems is stepping up to accelerate Canada’s innovation trajectory through a 5-point plan that includes leadership and investments in growing Cisco’s research and development footprint in Canada, establishing university chairs, creating a global Internet of Everything research hub, launching an investment program that will provide venture funds for Canadian startups, and the establishment of cloud and data centres.

Promoting diversity is critical to Canadian innovation and competitiveness. Many agree on the need for change, and the conversation has heated up in the last year, with proposed new disclosure requirements regarding gender diversity on boards and in senior management, requiring companies to “comply or explain” their composition and recruiting practices. While starting with gender diversity makes sense in policy terms, it’s clear that increased diversity overall in corporate leadership is not coming fast enough. Clearly, barriers remain and there isn’t agreement on the best way forward. Why is it important to have diversity in leadership? How is diversity linked to corporate values and innovative workplaces? Whose responsibility is it to drive change at the top? And what can and should be done? RBC Board Chair Kathleen (Katie) Taylor will address these questions drawing on stories and insight from her leadership journey as President and CEO of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, and as Chair of the Board of Canada’s largest bank. Biography Kathleen (Katie) Taylor is Chair of the RBC Board of Directors. She has served on the board since 2001, and has been a member of the Human Resources Committee, and member and chair of the Corporate Governance and Public Policy Committee. Ms. Taylor is the former President and Chief Executive Officer of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, where she held a number of senior leadership roles during her 24-year career with the company. Prior to becoming CEO in 2010, she served as President and Chief Operating Officer and President, Worldwide Business Operations. She was instrumental in establishing the firm’s global portfolio of luxury properties and ensuring the brand’s international success. Her many accolades for business achievements include the Schulich School of Business Award for Outstanding Executive Leadership and the inaugural Medal for Career Achievement from the Hennick Centre for Business and Law at York University, and she has been inducted into the Canadian Marketing Hall of Legends. Ms. Taylor has a Master of Business Administration degree from Schulich School of Business, a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Toronto. She is a director of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Chair of the Board of the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation. She is also Chair of the Principal’s International Advisory Board of McGill University and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the Schulich School of Business of York University. She lives in Toronto with her husband and has three grown children.

Gary Bettman and George Stroumboulopoulos Sep 22, 2014
    Show notes

With the NHL season around the corner, fans are wondering how the changes in Canadian hockey broadcasting will affect their access to the game. Please join us on September 22nd for a fireside chat with NHL Commissioner, Gary Bettman and Hockey Night in Canada Host, George Stroumboulopoulos as they discuss the launch of the upcoming season, the new frontier in hockey broadcasting, and the state of the game. Gary Bettman has served the National Hockey League as Commissioner since February 1, 1993, and has guided the world’s top professional hockey league through more than two decades of growth and advancement on and off the ice. Record revenues, record attendance and a wide variety of fan-friendly initiatives are just a few trademarks of Commissioner Bettman’s tenure, which has brought the NHL to a broader audience, through more media platforms, than any time in League history. By negotiating a long-term Collective Bargaining Agreement with the National Hockey League Players’ Association and long-term, multi-billion-dollar national broadcast rights agreements in the United States (NBC Sports Group) and Canada (Rogers Communications), Commissioner Bettman has fostered unprecedented economic stability for the League’s 30 teams. Between 1993 and 2014, League revenues increased nearly tenfold. On the ice, the NHL’s competitive balance may be unrivaled in professional sports: Through the implementation of rules designed to accentuate the speed, skill and creativity of the players, every Club has qualified for the playoffs at least once over the past nine seasons and a different team has earned the most cherished and historic trophy in professional sports – the Stanley Cup – in each of the past 15 campaigns. The combination of competitive balance, exciting play and a calendar of innovative signature events – including iconic outdoor games (the Winter Classic, the Stadium Series and the Heritage Classic) – has helped drive fan engagement and sponsor participation to unprecedented levels. These achievements were recognized with three Sports Business Awards accorded by the Sports Business Journal and Sports Business Daily in 2014, with Commissioner Bettman being named Sports Executive of the Year; the NHL being named Sports League of the Year, and the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic – which attracted a crowd of over 105,000 to the University of Michigan’s “Big House” stadium on New Year’s Day – being named Sports Event of the Year. Charitable undertakings, as well as a focus on community service and diversity, also have been at the forefront of Commissioner Bettman’s tenure. Hockey Fights Cancer has raised millions in support of cancer research and awareness. Mr. Bettman also prioritized grass-roots initiatives that bring hockey to youngsters. These programs include “Hockey is for Everyone,” a part of the NHL Foundation, the NHL’s charitable and community relations organization and a major component of the League’s youth hockey programming. In addition, the NHL in 2013 signed an historic partnership agreement with the “You Can Play Project” which is dedicated to ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation. NHL Green, another of Commissioner Bettman’s initiatives, has worked extensively to support environmental causes. NHL Green released the 2014 NHL Environmental Sustainability Report – the first of its kind by a major professional sports League – which highlights the numerous programs, benchmarks, and successes that have increased the overall sustainability of the League. In 2014, the Green Sports Alliance, a non-profit organization with a mission to help sports teams, venues and Leagues enhance their environmental performance, honored the NHL with its Environmental Leadership Award.
