    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

Hon. Tom Mulcair was elected leader of the Official Opposition and Leader of Canada’s New Democrats on March 24th, 2012 with 57.2 % of the vote. He was born in Ottawa, but was raised in Laval, North of Montreal. He is the second oldest of ten children. A lawyer by trade, Tom Mulcair worked at the Legislative Affairs branch of the Justice Ministry, and later in the Legal Affairs Directorate of the Conseil de la langue française. At the end of 1987, Tom was named President of the Quebec Professions Board (Office des professions du Québec), a position he held until 1993. He was first elected to Quebec National Assembly in 1994, as MNA for Chomedey. He was reelected three times. During his career in provincial politics, Tom Mulcair served as critic for Justice and for Industry, as well as Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks. In 2007 Tom Mulcair accepted Jack Layton’s invitation to become his Quebec lieutenant. They were both convinced that the NDP represented the values of Quebec. Tom Mulcair went on to become the first NDP MP in the province of Quebec to be elected in a general election. He was first elected as the MP for Outremont in the 2007 by-election, and re-elected in 2008 and 2011. Along with the strong NDP team, Jack Layton and Tom Mulcair worked tirelessly and helped to create a spectacular breakthrough in Quebec on May 2, 2011 – making Canada’s New Democrats the Official Opposition for the first time in history.

As the most multicultural city in Canada, diversity in Toronto is a given. The world lives here – you can see that on our subways, hear it in our music, taste it in our food. How well are we doing in seizing on that diversity, and using all the varied talents and perspectives at our fingertips? June 5, Metro Morning host Matt Galloway moderates Diversity 2.0, a discussion with business, arts and civic leaders on inclusion and why, for Toronto to remain a leader, we need to look, sound and think as broadly as the city we are today.
