The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

Immigration and economic growth are linked. The vast majority of newcomers come here to pursue economic opportunities. If immigrants are working, they are able to support themselves and their families, integrate into their communities, and pay taxes towards Canada’s generous social programs. But how is this best achieved? How do we ensure the solid economic performance of immigrants and equality between newcomers and those born in Canada? The good news is that, in the past several years, we’ve begun to turn the corner. Please join us on March 19th as The Honourable Jason Kenney, Canada’s Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, discusses ways to ensure the success of immigrants in the new economy. Jason Kenney was appointed Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism on October 30, 2008. He was reappointed to the portfolio on May 18, 2011 and given the added responsibility of Chair of the Cabinet Committee on Operations. The committee provides day-to-day coordination of the government’s agenda, including issues management, legislation and house planning, and communications. Jason Kenney was first elected to the House of Commons in 1997 and has been re-elected five times. He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister in 2006, and Secretary of State (Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity) in 2007. Mr. Kenney was born in Ontario and raised in Saskatchewan, where he graduated from Notre Dame College. He did undergraduate studies in philosophy at the St. Ignatius Institute of the University of San Francisco. Mr. Kenney is a former Chair of the House of Commons Subcommittee on International Human Rights. He served in a variety of positions in Opposition, including Finance Critic and Deputy House Leader. Prior to seeking election, Mr. Kenney served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

Please join us on Friday, March 9th, as the Honourable Glen Murray, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, joins us to discuss innovation and productivity in the Ontario Post Secondary Education (PSE) landscape. He will outline the steps needed to take a leadership role in the globalized knowledge economy while providing real choice to Ontario students. Glen Murray is the Member of Provincial Parliament for Toronto Centre. First elected in 2010 by-election, he was re-elected in October 2011 and appointed Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities. He previously served as Minister of Research and Innovation. As Minister of Research and Innovation, Murray supported Premier McGuinty’s leadership in Ontario’s Innovation Agenda and leverage gains made by his predecessors into new initiatives and enhanced programs. Drawing on his experience in developing strong regional economies, Murray brought a strong regional economic perspective to the ministry and his efforts have delivered results. For example, 14 new Regional Innovation Centres were created across the province to identify talent and unleash entrepreneurial energy across Ontario. Murray has a lifetime of activism in urban planning, sustainable development and community health. He served as President and CEO of the Canadian Urban Institute and on several university, hospital and community boards, including the Toronto District School Board’s Reference Group for Improving Services for Marginalized Students. In that role he led the successful campaign to transfer the equivalent of 5 cents a litre of the federal gas tax to municipalities for infrastructure renewal and construction. He also served as Senior Resident at Massey College and was a Visiting Fellow at the Faculty of Architecture and Landscape Design at the University of Toronto.

Hon. Jean Charest Mar 05, 2012
    Show notes

Elected Premier of Québec since 2003, Jean Charest is putting forward a series of political initiatives that focus primarily on energy development, approaches to climate change, and the implementation of sustainable development policies. In the economic arena, his government’s action is geared towards development and the creation of wealth, with a view to raising Québec’s international profile and ensuring the continuance of the province’s social programs. The Premier wants to empower Quebecers to be more prosperous, notably by developing and enhancing Québec’s energy resources, making significant investments in public infrastructure and establishing a new economic space that will improve Québec’s position on the world scene. He has also announced the Plan Nord, the work of a generation that brings together the imperatives of environmental, social and economic growth and sustainability. During his speech, Mr. Charest will address the economy and Québec’s new economic space. Jean Charest was born in Sherbrooke on June 24, 1958. He is married to Michèle Dionne and they have three children, Amélie, Antoine and Alexandra. Within a few years of finishing his law degree, Jean Charest leaped into the political arena, beginning his career at the federal level with his election in the riding of Sherbrooke at age 26 for the Progressive-Conservative Party of Canada. Re-elected three times, he was given a number of ministerial positions in the House of Commons. At age 28, he was made Minister of State for Youth, the youngest Cabinet member in the history of Canada. At the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, in his capacity as federal Environment Minister, Jean Charest headed the Canadian delegation that signed the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. He entered Québec politics in 1998 as Leader of the Liberal Party of Québec. With the general elections of 1998, he won the Sherbrooke seat and made his National Assembly debut as Leader of the Official Opposition. He became Premier of Québec further to the 2003 general elections. His party was returned to power in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, he formed Québec’s first gender-equal Cabinet. As soon as he came to power in 2003, the Premier made health a priority. Numerous measures were deployed across Québec to reduce wait times for surgery, turn the tide in the shortage of physicians and nurses, and facilitate access to front-line services in every region of Québec. Families are at the heart of the initiatives undertaken by Jean Charest’s government. To enable families to reap the benefits of direct government action, his government established Child Assistance and the Québec Parental Insurance Plan, North America’s most extensive and generous parental leave system. His government also furthered access to reduced-contribution childcare and strengthened measures for successfully blending work and family life. The environment is another issue of paramount importance for Jean Charest. Through, among other things, his government’s ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets, petroleum royalties, and the Sustainable Development Act, which adds to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms the right for every person to live in a healthful environment in which biodiversity is preserved, Jean Charest has made Québec a leader in the field of the environment and sustainable development in North America and globally. The action of Jean Charest’s government’s action is geared towards economic development and the creation of wealth, with a view to Québec’s international reach and the continuance of Québec’s social programs. The Premier wants to empower Quebecers to be more prosperous, notably by developing and enhancing Québec’s energy resources and by establishing a new economic space that will improve Québec’s position on the world scene. With Jean Charest at the helm, Québec withstood one of the worst financial crises the world has ever known.
