    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

One year after the launch of The Next 36 – Canada’s entrepreneurial leadership initiative aimed at transforming this country’s most promising students into high impact leaders – come join Amanda Lang and the program’s Founding Chairman, Reza Satchu, as they delve into the evolution of this initiative, the people behind it, what they have achieved and how they plan on changing Canada’s entrepreneurial landscape. The Next 36 is a national entrepreneurship program for Canada’s most promising undergraduate students. Key resources are provided to extraordinarily talented young Canadians with the potential to build and lead great organizations. Promising undergraduates are selected from a variety of academic disciplines, and from across Canada, through a rigorous national selection process. The young entrepreneurs selected are placed in teams of four and tasked with building a business. They are provided mentorship from some of Canada’s top business leaders, $50,000 cash and academic instruction from some of the world’s top faculty. The program is spearheaded by a founding group of high-profile business leaders, entrepreneurs, and academics. For more information, please visit: www.thenext36.ca Reza Satchu is Managing Partner of Alignvest Capital Management, a private investment company based in Toronto and New York. He has co-founded, built and managed several successful operating businesses from inception, including SupplierMarket, a 225 person supply chain software company (investors included KKR, Sequoia and Onex) that was sold to Ariba in 2000; StorageNow Holdings which grew to be Canada’s second largest self-storage company before being sold to InStorage REIT in 2007; Greyson Asia, a market neutral hedge fund focused on China, Korea and Japan; and, KGS Alpha Capital Markets, a $160 million fixed income broker dealer focused on the US mortgage market. Technology permeates virtually every aspect of our lives; for example, it has fundamentally changed the way we learn, shop, bank, and travel. Many Canadians who encounter our health care system wonder why much of their health information remains paper-based. Ten years ago, Canada’s First Ministers agreed to collaborate on replacing paper-based filing with electronic health record systems. They recognized that moving patient health information into the 21st century is key to achieving major health care reforms, supporting a more sustainable health system and improving the patient experience through increased clinical value. While much has been accomplished since those early days, a lot of work remains before Canada’s hundreds of thousands of health care providers adopt and use electronic systems. Clinicians need to learn to use the new hardware and amend their workflows in order to yield the value. While we know health care does not look good on paper and we would all like to have these systems fully in place and adopted today, there are numerous barriers and challenges to overcome. Simply put, we cannot get there in one step. Please join us for lunch on December 2nd as Graham Scott, Board Chair of Canada Health Infoway, outlines where Canada is heading in its efforts to modernize health care systems throughout the country and the major obstacles that need to be overcome to accomplish this.
