    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

The Canadian economy has come through the financial crisis. We are now in a crucial period of economic recovery. The global economic situation is presenting a challenge for governments all over the world. Here in Canada, the Government of Canada has received a mandate from Canadians to eliminate the deficit and return to a balanced budget in three years. To achieve this, and as outlined in Budget 2011, the Government will review government spending to achieve savings of at least $4 billion by 2014-15. This review focuses on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of government operations and programs to ensure value for taxpayer money. Please join us on for breakfast on October 31st as Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for FedNor, outlines what the Government of Canada is doing to promote and strengthen the Canadian economy.

With more baby boomers entering their senior years, Canadians need to be concerned about their ability to provide high quality end-of-life care for loved ones. Today, less than 35 per cent of Canadians have access to palliative care and many are forced to shoulder a significant portion of the cost themselves. Paul Lucas, President & CEO of GlaxoSmithKline Inc. (GSK) and proud member of the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association’s (CHPCA) Champions Council believes that Canada urgently needs a systems approach to end-of-life care: one that ensures that high quality care is available for Canadian families including information, resources and support. Please join us on Monday, October 24th, as Mr. Lucas challenges corporate Canada to increase support for hospice palliative care by providing compassionate care benefits for employees. By taking a leadership role and helping employees in their time of need, Canadian employers benefit as well through a healthier and more engaged workforce. CHPCA CHPCA is the national voice for Hospice Palliative Care in Canada. Advancing and advocating for quality end-of-life/hospice palliative care in Canada, its work includes public policy, public education and awareness. Established in 1991, its volunteer Board of Directors is composed of hospice palliative care workers and volunteers from Canadian provinces and territories as well as members-at-large. In the Fall of 2010, the CHPCA launched it’s Champion’s Council, a group of key business and community leaders in Canada, including Mr. Lucas, who have offered to advance the profile of hospice palliative care, providing a wider range of expertise, leadership and support to the CHPCA.

Please join The Canadian Club of Toronto and The Empire Club of Canada on Friday, September 30th, when Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak outlines the important choice families face in the October 6th provincial election and the change he is committed to delivering. Change that brings tax relief for families after eight years of unexpected tax hikes. Change that guarantees important services like health care will be there when families need it. Change that ends the fraud, waste and secret deals that divert too many tax dollars from frontline services. And change that puts faith in the private sector to create jobs and restores Ontario as Canada’s engine of job creation. Meet Tim Hudak I was born and raised in Fort Erie, a small town in Ontario. My younger sister, Tricia, and I were lucky to have the love, support and guidance of our parents, Pat and Anne Marie, both of whom were teachers. After graduating from university, I was a Customs Officer at the Peace Bridge. Then I traveled across the country as part of a management team helping a major international retailer grow its operations throughout Canada. In the early 1990′s, I became motivated to enter politics. Like most of Ontario, my town was having a tough time. My friends were leaving Fort Erie and heading to other places to find opportunities that were not available at home. I wanted to stand up for families like mine, and restore the jobs and the sense of community that were under such serious pressure where I lived, and across Ontario. I was first elected as the MPP for Niagara South in 1995. I served as a Cabinet Minister for five years. I was elected the 23rd Leader of the Ontario PC Party in June 2009. But the most important dates in my life are October 5, 2002, when I married my wife Debbie, and October 3, 2007, when the light of my life – my daughter Miller – was born. I want to be Premier to stand up for families – to restore Ontario as the economic engine that drives this great country, to ensure Miller has every opportunity to succeed like I’ve had and more, and to deliver the change and relief Ontario desperately needs.
