    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Please join the Canadian Club of Toronto on May 13th when Frank Stronach, Founder and Chairman of Magna International Inc. discusses proposed reforms in four key areas necessary to boost national productivity, including: Parliamentary Reform; Education Reform; Tax Reform; and Health Care Reform. Frank Stronach is the founder and Chairman of Magna International Inc., one of the world’s largest and most diversified suppliers of automotive components, systems and modules. Magna employs over 96,000 people in 256 manufacturing operations and 82 product development and engineering centres in 26 countries. The Company manufactures a wide range of vehicle systems, including: automotive interior systems; seating systems; closure systems; body and chassis systems; vision systems; electronic systems; exterior systems; powertrain systems; roof systems; hybrid and electric vehicles/systems; as well as complete vehicle engineering and assembly. Magna had sales in 2010 of US $24.1 billion and is listed and traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange in Canada (MG) and the New York Stock Exchange in the US (MGA). Mr. Stronach was born in Weiz, Austria and immigrated to Canada in 1954 with a working background in tool and machine engineering. In 1957 he formed a tool and die company, Multimatic Investments Limited, which subsequently expanded into the production of automotive components. In 1969, Multimatic Investments Limited merged with the Magna Electronics Corporation Limited, and subsequently became Magna International Inc. In 1971 Mr. Stronach introduced his management philosophy, known as Fair Enterprise, to Magna. Fair Enterprise is based on a business Charter of Rights that predetermines the annual percentage of profits shared between employees, management, investors and society. These rights are enshrined in a governing Corporate Constitution. Mr. Stronach has served on numerous corporate, government and university boards and has provided assistance to a wide range of charitable and community service organizations. He is the recipient of a Doctor of Philosophy, Honoris Causa from Haifa University in Israel; a Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa LL.D. from the University College of Cape Breton; a Doctor of Commerce, Honoris Causa from St. Mary’s University in Halifax; and an Honorary Professorship from the Graz University of Technology. In 1996, Mr. Stronach was inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame. He won the 1997 “Business Leader of the Year Award” from the Richard Ivey School of Business and the 1998 “Entrepreneur of the Year Award” from the University of Michigan. In 1999 he was named a recipient of the Order of Canada and in 2000 he won the Ernst & Young “Entrepreneur of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award.” In 2002, the Canadian Council for International Business named Mr. Stronach the 2001 “Canadian International Executive of the Year”, and in that same year he received the Gold Medal for meritorious service from Austria. In 2004 he received the Yves Landry Foundation “Person of the Year” Award for his achievement in promoting technological education and technical skills training. In 2005 he received the B’nai Brith Canada Award of Merit for distinguished humanitarian service. He was inducted into the Canadian Manufacturing Hall of Fame in 2006, and in 2010 he received the Joseph Schumpeter Award for innovative achievements in economics, politics or business, and the Gold Star Award, the highest civilian honour given by the Republic of Austria.

    General Motors of Canada sets it sights on the road ahead as it builds a new future. Please join us on May 9th when Kevin Williams, President and Managing Director of GM Canada, will discuss the transformation under way at the new GM, including the innovations required to face tomorrow’s challenges. Kevin W. Williams was appointed President and Managing Director of GM Canada Limited on April 1, 2010, and has overall responsibility for all General Motors operations in Canada.Prior to his current assignment, Williams served as GM Vice President and General Manager, Service and Parts Operations, effective December 1, 2008. In this position, he oversaw all GM Global Aftersales business, and served as Chairman and Global Process Leader for the GM Automotive Aftermarket Strategy Board (AASB). Previously Williams was appointed President and Managing Director of GM de Mexico, effective August 1, 2006. He served as Assistant Managing Director and Manufacturing Director, GM de Mexico from June 2005, and GM North America Vice President of Quality from May 2003. Williams also served as a member of the GM North America Strategy Board from May 2003 through June 2009. Prior assignments included positions as Global Executive Director, Supplier Quality, Development and Supplier Diversity for Worldwide Purchasing (since 2000); and Executive Director, Supplier Quality and Development for GM Europe, based in Russelsheim, Germany, with responsibilities spanning 22 countries and 1,500 employees (since 1997). Williams began his GM career in 1983 as a reliability analyst at Buick City in Flint, Michigan. In 1989, he became the General Supervisor of Production at the Lansing Craft Centre in Lansing, Michigan; and, in 1991 was appointed Program Readiness Manager for GM’s EV1 electric vehicle program. In 1993, he became a Reliability Engineer with the former North America Truck Group. In 1995, he became the Assistant Production Superintendent at the Janesville Assembly Plant in Janesville, Wisconsin; and, in 1996 was promoted to Area Manager of General Assembly.

    On April 27th, The Canadian Club of Toronto and Equal Voice, will once again, join forces to spotlight women in politics at the Sixth Annual Women in Public Life Luncheon. For ten years Equal Voice has been promoting the election of more women in all levels of government. This year we are pleased to announce Isabel Bassett, Former Minster of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation, Government of Ontario, as our keynote speaker and Equal Voice’s EVE award recipient. Isabel Bassett is the past Chair and CEO of TVO. She was MPP for the Toronto riding of St Paul’s and was Minister of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation in the Ontario Government. Prior to that she spent 12 years as a host and producer of award-winning documentaries on CFTO TV, part of the CTV network. She currently writes free-lance articles, speaks, lobbies and campaigns on behalf of women’s issues. Isabel is devoting her time mostly to the following organizations: Dalhousie Advisory Council, Honourary Co-Chair ­– Huntsville Hospital Foundation Capital Campaign, Member – International Women’s Federation, Member York University Library Advisory Council YWCA Toronto, Campaign Cabinet for the new downtown Toronto Elm Street Centre for Affordable Housing for Women Board Member – Moving Beyond Prejudice, (Paul Saltzman’s anti-discrimination education initiative). Isabel is also a past president of the Canadian Club of Toronto.

    Please join us on Monday, April 18th when Hon. Kathleen Wynne, Minister of Transportation speaks at our podium. Kathleen Wynne was first elected as the MPP for Don Valley West in October 2003, and was re-elected to a second term in October 2007. Kathleen was sworn in as Minister of Education on September 18, 2006. In January 2010 she became Minister of Transportation. Before the Premier asked her to serve as Minister, she was appointed as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Training, Colleges, and Universities, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Education, Chair of the Cabinet Committee on Community Affairs Policy, and Chair of the Liberal Women’s Caucus. Kathleen holds a Masters degree in Linguistics from the University of Toronto and a Masters degree in Adult Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). She also completed mediation training at Harvard University. Building on a lifetime of political activity and a career of public service, Ms. Wynne is a knowledgeable and passionate advocate for her local community of Don Valley West. She has led citizens groups in a number of grassroots community projects and has played a major role as an organizer and facilitator. All of which has led to a results-based approach to life, government and community. Kathleen has three children, Chris, Jessie and Maggie and last May, she became the proud grandmother of Olivia Jane. Kathleen and her partner Jane have lived in North Toronto for more than twenty years.

    Please join The Canadian Club of Toronto on Friday April 15th, when the Hon. Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario, speaks at our podium. Dalton McGuinty is Ontario’s 24th Premier. In the provincial election of 2003, he led the Liberal party to a majority government. He and his party earned a second consecutive majority on October 10, 2007. He has represented the riding of Ottawa South as its MPP since 1990. During his first term, Premier McGuinty’s government reduced class sizes and hospital wait times, improved Ontario’s infrastructure, and attracted billions in new investment to Ontario. Now in his second term, Premier McGuinty remains committed to building an even stronger economy for Ontario families. New tax reforms will mean more money in the pockets of Ontarians while making our province an even more attractive place for businesses to invest. The government has laid out a plan for Ontario that includes training for our workers; increasing the Ontario child benefit; building more affordable-housing; and increasing funding for health care, education and post-secondary education.
