    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Show notes

Please join The Canadian Club of Toronto and our event partner DiverseCity on Wednesday, February 9th, when His Worship, Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of the City of Calgary speaks at our podium. Naheed Nenshi was sworn in as Calgary’s 36th mayor on October 25, 2010. He is a passionate Calgarian, an accomplished business professional, and a community leader with a solid track record of getting things done. He’s run a large nonprofit, he’s been a trusted advisor to corporate leaders in Canada and the US, and he literally wrote the book on Canadian cities. Mayor Nenshi spent many years at the international business consulting firm, McKinsey & Co., where he advised large telecommunications, banking, retail and oil and gas companies in corporate strategy. After leaving McKinsey, Mayor Nenshi formed his own business, the Ascend Group, a consultancy that assists public, private, and nonprofit organizations to grow. In this role he designed major policy for the Alberta government, helped create a Canadian strategy for The Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy and worked with the United Nations to determine how global business can help the poorest people on the planet. Mayor Nenshi was Canada’s first tenured professor in the field of nonprofit management, at Mount Royal University’s Bissett School of Business. His real passion, though, is making cities, especially Calgary, work better. He’s the lead author of Building Up: Making Canada’s Cities Engines of Growth and Magnets of Development and has long been putting his ideas to work in Calgary. He’s been the Chairman of the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts, and has lent his expertise to nonprofits across the city, including the Calgary Foundation, the United Way, the Coral Springs Community Association, and Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids. He’s also served on the leadership team of imagineCalgary, where he was a primary author of Calgary’s 100-year vision, and is a co-founder of the Better Calgary Campaign and of CivicCamp. Mayor Nenshi grew up in Calgary and has lived and worked in cities around the world before coming back to make his home here. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (with distinction) from the University of Calgary, where he was President of the Students’ Union, and a Master in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he studied as a Kennedy Fellow.

    Margaret Franklin Jan 13, 2011
    Show notes

The recent collapse of global financial markets underscored many flaws in our industry but perhaps none more so than the need to ensure investors are better protected. Please join us on January 13, 2011 when Margaret Franklin, CFA, chair of the Board of Governors of CFA Institute and President and CEO of Kinsale Private Wealth, will discuss what steps investors, regulators, government and industry participants should be taking to enhance investor protections. Ultimately, Ms. Franklin will make the case that Canada’s track record of holding rogue advisors accountable is detrimental not only to investors but Canada’s capital markets as a whole. Ms. Franklin’s perspective, as chair of one of the world’s largest association of investment professionals, will be thought-provoking and insightful, and will almost certainly get people talking. Margaret Franklin, CFA, is chair of the Board of Governors of CFA Institute, the global association for investment professionals that administers the CFA program worldwide and advocates for high standards of practice within the global investment industry. Ms. Franklin has also served as chair of the audit and risk committee of the Board of Governors of CFA Institute, and has also headed its external relations, volunteer involvement and planning committees. She is a past president of the Toronto CFA Society. In addition, Ms. Franklin is the President & CEO of Kinsale Private Wealth. Based in Toronto, she has 20 years of financial industry experience in investment management with both institutional and private clients. She worked with global institutional organizations including Barclays Global Investors, State Street Global Advisors and Mercer before moving to the private client business. Franklin was a partner in a boutique private client firm for eight years before Kinsale Private Wealth.
