    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Please join us on Tuesday, October 5th when Rahul K. Bhardwaj, President & CEO of the Toronto Community Foundation offers the first presentation of the 2010 Toronto’s Vital Signs® report. He will inform Torontonians about the pressing issues and trends facing the city leading up to the municipal election. Following the presentation, award winning Globe and Mail columnist Margaret Wente will moderate a discussion with Mr. Bhardwaj and Martin Connell, the prominent Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist, and Chair of the Toronto Community Foundation. Toronto’s Vital Signs® provides a snapshot of the trends in our city, highlighting progress we should be proud of and challenges that need to be addressed to improve Toronto’s quality of life. The report is compiled from current statistics and special studies which look at eleven different, yet interconnected, issue areas that are critical to the well-being of our city and its residents. The report aims to: inspire civic engagement, provide focus for public debate, and guide donors and stakeholders who want to direct their resources to areas of greatest need. Since the first Toronto’s Vital Signs® publication in 2001, the report has been adopted by 16 more communities across Canada and is now used as a model around the world. Mr. Bhardwaj is the President & CEO of the Toronto Community Foundation. He was formerly a corporate lawyer with a leading Canadian law firm, Vice President of the Toronto 2008 Olympic Bid and then CEO of United Way of York Region. His long history of community service includes serving as Chair of the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival; a member of Toronto Mayor David Miller’s ‘Blue Ribbon’ Fiscal Review panel; a current member of the Boards of the Stratford Festival of Canada, George Brown College and Metrolinx. Rahul is a popular presenter and speaker, particularly on issues relating to the city, community and leadership as well as Toronto’s Vital Signs®He has been featured in local Toronto media as well as national and international media including CBC Newsworld, CNN and the national Daily News in China.

    Please join us on September 30th when Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Former President of India, discusses the role of technology in India’s emergence in the world stage and opportunities for Canadian/Indian partnerships. Dr. Kalam is one of the most respected and beloved leaders of India. He is one of the most distinguished scientists in India with the unique honour of having been progressively awarded the three highest civilian awards in the nation. He displayed vision and leadership while holding the topmost scientific position in India, that of the Chief Scientific Officer for the Government of India. Subsequently, as one of the most admired Presidents of India, he also brought a touch of humanism to the position. His “Vision 2020 for India” developed during his term as President has set the tone for India’s future. Dr. Kalam was the first civil servant to be accorded India’s highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, an honour he was given even before becoming the President of India.

    Appointed as the Financial Secretary in May 2000, Antony Leung is the third most senior official of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. Working closely with the relevant policy secretaries, his primary duty is to oversee policy formulation and implementation in financial, monetary, economic and employment matters. He is also responsible for preparing and presenting the Government Budget. Before taking up the position of Financial Secretary, Mr. Leung was the Asia-Pacific Chairman of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Prior to this, Mr. Leung spent 23 years with Citicorp where he took regional management positions in investment banking, corporate and private banking in Hong Kong, New York, Singapore and Manila. Mr. Leung will share his insights into the future development of Asian economies with particular focus on how closer Canada–Hong Kong partnerships can capitalize on the unprecedented opportunities presented by the opening and growth of the huge China market.

Thanks to the Internet, new journalists are emerging and redefining the craft. Nowhere is this more evident than in ‘political journalism’ where some of the most original and informative political reporting and commentary is taking place not in the mainstream media but online. David Frum, an established mainstream author and journalist, is a leader in this new form of political journalism. He is the creator of Frum Forum, a website dedicated to the modernization and renewal of the U.S. Republican party and the conservative movement in America. Please join us on Monday, September 27th when David Frum will speak on the state of political journalism. David Frum is the editor of FrumForum.com and the author of six books, including two New York Times bestsellers. He is a regular commentator on American Public Media’s Marketplace and writes regular columns for Time magazine, CNN.com, The Week and the National Post. In 2001-2002, David Frum served as a special assistant to President George W. Bush. In October 2005, Frum founded and served as chairman of Americans for Better Justice, the lobbying group that led the opposition to the nomination of Harriet Miers to the U.S. Supreme Court. In 2007-2008, he served as senior foreign policy adviser to the Rudy Giuliani presidential campaign. Frum is a member of the board of directors of the Republican Jewish Coalition. The Daily Telegraph’s 2007 and 2009 surveys named Frum as one of America’s 50 most influential conservatives.

On July 1, 2003 he was appointed to the Board of Directors for MLSE.
