    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Please join The Canadian Club of Toronto on Tuesday, December 14th, when Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan will speak at our podium and give an update on actions being taken to manage responsibly and to focus on the priorities of Ontario families. Dwight Duncan was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 1995, and was re-elected in 1999, 2003 and 2007. Duncan previously served as Minister of Energy and Chair of Cabinet, Minister of Finance and Chair of Management Board of Cabinet, as well as Government House Leader. As Minister of Energy, Duncan brought meaningful change to Ontario’s electricity sector, fostering a culture of conservation, while ensuring a reliable, sustainable, diverse and affordable power supply. Duncan is a lifelong resident of Windsor. From 1987 to 1995, Duncan served as an administrator at Brentwood Recovery Centre, Canada’s largest alcohol and drug recovery centre. He sat on Windsor City Council from 1988 to 1994. A graduate of McGill University and the University of Windsor, Duncan has degrees in economics and commerce, as well as a MBA.

    Managing Through Difficult Times

    Please join us on Wednesday, November 24th when the Honourable Bob Rae, Foreign Affairs Critic for the Liberal Party of Canada, delves into the issues surrounding emerging democracies around the world such as Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and the Middle East. He will outline the role that Canada can and should be playing in supporting the development of democracy and helping to resolve conflict around the world. The Hon. Bob Rae is the Liberal Member of Parliament in the federal riding of Toronto Centre and foreign affairs critic for the Liberal Party of Canada. Bob Rae served as Ontario’s 21st Premier, and has been elected ten times to federal and provincial parliaments. Mr. Rae has a B.A. and an LLB from the University of Toronto and was a Rhodes Scholar from Ontario in 1969. He obtained a B.Phil degree from Oxford University in 1971 and was named a Queen’s Counsel in 1984. Mr. Rae has received numerous honorary degrees and awards from Canadian and foreign universities, colleges, and organizations. Mr. Rae was appointed to Her Majesty’s Privy Council for Canada in 1998 and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000, and appointed an Officer of the Order of Ontario in 2004. From 1996 to 2007 he was a partner in the law firm, Goodmans LLP one of Canada’s leading international law firms. Mr. Rae’s clients included companies, trade unions, charitable and non-governmental organizations, and governments themselves. He has extensive experience in negotiation, mediation and arbitration, and consults widely on issues of public policy both in Canada and worldwide. He remains connected with the mediation and arbitration firm of ADR Chambers. Mr. Rae is the past president and founding Chairman, of the Forum of Federations and served as Chairman of the Institute of Research on Public Policy (IRPP). He was chair of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and is the Chairman Emeritus of the Royal Conservatory of Music, as well as National Spokesperson of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. He was the Chief Negotiator of the Canadian Red Cross Society in its restructuring, and also served as a member of the Canada Transportation Act Review and the Security and Intelligence Review Committee for Canada. He has served on the boards of a number of public companies and charities. He was Chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University from 2002 to 2007. Mr. Rae completed a review of Ontario’s Postsecondary School Education for the Ontario Provincial government, with a report entitled Ontario: A Leader in Learning, which in turn led to significant policy and budgetary change. In the spring of 2005, Mr. Rae was appointed a special advisor to the Canadian Minister of Public Safety on the Air India bombing of 1985. His report, Lessons to be Learned was published in November of 2005 and led to his further appointment as Independent Counsellor to the Prime Minister of Canada. Mr. Rae’s books From Protest to Power, The Three Questions, Canada in the Balance, and Exporting Democracy: The Risks and Rewards of Pursuing a Good Idea are published by McClelland & Stewart. Mr. Rae is Senior Fellow of Massey College in the University of Toronto.

    Please join us on Friday, November 12th when Calin Rovinescu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada discusses how a competitive framework for the aviation sector in Canada would also unleash Toronto’s potential as a global transportation hub. Calin Rovinescu was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada in April 2009. From 2004 until his re-joining Air Canada, Mr. Rovinescu was a Co-founder and Principal of Genuity Capital Markets, one of Canada’s leading independent investment banks. Mr. Rovinescu first joined Air Canada in 2000 as Executive Vice President, Corporate Development & Strategy, where he was Chairman of, and had oversight for many of the airline’s businesses including loyalty management (Aeroplan), regional carriers (Jazz) and maintenance, repair and overhaul (ACTS). He also had overall responsibility for a number of corporate functions including Legal, Information & Technology, E-Commerce, People, Labour, Government Affairs, Communications, Alliances and Corporate Secretariat. In addition, Mr. Rovinescu held the position of Chief Restructuring Officer during the airline’s 2003-2004 restructuring. Prior to 2000, he was the Managing Partner of the law firm Stikeman Elliott in Montreal, where he practiced law for over 20 years in the areas of corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions, and was a member of the firm’s Partnership Board and Executive Committee. Mr. Rovinescu received his LL.B from the University of Ottawa in 1980, his LL.L. from the University of Montreal in 1978, and his D.E.C. from McGill University in 1974. He is a member of the Quebec and Ontario Bar Associations. Mr. Rovinescu is a member of the IATA Board of Governors and also serves on the Board of Directors of several private and non-profit corporations including the McGill University Health Centre.

    Connecting the World: A New Canadian Aviation Policy

    Please join us on Wednesday, October 20th when Ambassador Gary Doer speaks at our podium in his first Toronto Speech. In October, 2009, Gary Doer assumed his responsibilities as Canada’s 23rd representative to the United States of America. Prior to taking up his current position in Washington, Ambassador Doer served as Premier of Manitoba for ten years. During that time, he worked extensively with U.S. Governors to enhance Canada-U.S. cooperation on trade, agriculture, water protection, climate change and renewable energy. Ambassador Doer won three consecutive elections as Premier of Manitoba with successive increased majorities. In 2005, he was named by Business Week magazine as one of the top 20 international leaders on climate change. His government introduced balanced budgets during each of his ten years in office while reducing many taxes, including a plan to eliminate small business tax. As Premier, he led strategic investments in health care, education, and training and infrastructure. Ambassador Doer hails from Winnipeg. He is married with two daughters.
