Using the Elimination Diet with Tom Malterre Sep 16, 2020
    Show notes

Gluten, dairy, nuts…many of us have problems with certain foods we eat. But how do you identify which foods are the issue, and how do you still get all the key nutrients you need to nourish your body? In this week’s episode of Be HEALTHistic, Dr. Drew Sinatra welcomes his friend and certified nutritionist Tom Malterre to talk about nutrient deficiencies, allergic reactions to the foods you’re consuming, and how you can use the elimination diet to help identify ANY food sensitivities you may have. First, Tom explains that while some people have frank allergies to specific foods, many of us are far more sensitive these days because our immune systems are hyper-reacting to certain things in our environment. He shares the top foods that are hardest to break down (gluten, dairy, eggs) and how undigested food proteins sneak into the immune system, creating inflammation and unpleasant symptoms. Then, Tom shares details about the elimination diet — what to eliminate and how, how long the process takes, how to re-introduce foods — and how the ultimate goal is to discover which foods make you feel like a rock star, versus the foods that hold you back. Next, Dr. Drew and Tom discuss nutrient deficiencies, and how the vast majority of us are missing vital nutrients that may be causing pain or anxiety symptoms. He discusses the importance of doing nutrient testing to determine what needs are not being met, versus introducing a synthetic compound that may exacerbate issues. Finally, Tom shares his “pearl” of wisdom about why it’s vital to trust yourself and listen to your body when it’s talking to you. Don’t miss this opportunity to Be HEALTHistic!

Eating the Rainbow with Dr. Deanna Minich Sep 09, 2020

First, Deanna and the doctors discuss the power of plant-based foods, and why getting enough fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, and even tea is vital to a healthy diet. Deanna gives our doctor duo her take on lectins, and whether a lectin-rich diet leads to different clinical conditions — as well as how we should look at our genes ancestrally to recognize certain food sensitivities. Next, Deanna explains why her main principles of plant-based nutrition are color, creativity, and variety, and why the micro-rotation of different foods is key to enriching the gut microbiome. Then, Deanna and the doctors discuss foods that can protect and boost immunity during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the best foods to eat for heart health. Finally, Deanna shares her “pearl” of wisdom about eating the rainbow, and reveals her picks for the best antioxidant-rich foods. Brain Wash: Detoxing Your Mind with Drs. David and Austin Perlmutter Aug 19, 2020
    Show notes

In this week’s episode of Be HEALTHistic, Drs. Stephen and Drew Sinatra welcome another father-son doctor duo — neurologist and author, Dr. David Perlmutter, and his son, Dr. Austin Perlmutter — who co-wrote the new book, Brain Wash: Detox Your Mind for Clearer Thinking, Deeper Relationships, and Lasting Happiness. Today, we explore their theory of how our brains have been hijacked and re-wired by our 24/7 modern culture to keep us unhappy and unhealthy, and what we can do to think more clearly, make better decisions, reconnect with others, and develop healthier habits. First, the doctors talk about the unique bond they share as father-son physicians, and how the dads paved the way for their sons as mentors in medicine. Next, they discuss our vital connection to nature, how our health is a reflection of our environment, and how that’s associated with empathy and narcissism. The doctors also examine disconnection syndrome, and how two different parts of our brain — the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex — are constantly fighting each other for control over our decision-making. Then, the Perlmutters further apply the concepts in Brain Wash to the coronavirus pandemic; how the chronic stress of the situation is not only impacting our physical health, but also our mental health and the ability to make smart choices. They talk about the senses that have been affected by the virus, give their opinion on mask-wearing, and explain how observing COVID-19 health guidelines is a display of empathy. Finally, the co-authors share their top “pearls” of advice from the new book. Don’t miss this opportunity to Be HEALTHistic, where the Doctors Perlmutter explain how Brain Wash is the key to rewiring the brain for better decision-making, and cultivating a healthy, vibrant life in the modern world.

    Show notes

In this week’s episode of Be HEALTHistic, Drs. Steve and Drew Sinatra welcome cardiologist, internist and homeopathic medical doctor Dr. Lee Cowden. He has 30-plus years of experience treating cardiovascular disease, cancer and other chronic diseases with his integrative approach, but is best known for his treatment of Lyme disease. Today, Dr. Cowden covers everything you should know about this insidious condition, and shares the best natural ways to treat it. He also talks about his new book, No Doctors Required — which Dr. Steve also contributed to — and his thoughts on how spirituality can enhance your health. First, Dr. Cowden explains how as a cardiologist he came to treat Lyme disease, and how he’s helped patients for whom standard, antibiotic treatment therapy didn’t work by using herbal solutions. He shares the details of his Cowden Support Program, the benefits of Nutramedix herbal treatments, as well as the most effective types of testing available to detect Lyme. Then, the doctors delve into the wide range of symptoms that Lyme disease sufferers experience, what can exacerbate symptoms, and why if you have a variety of odd symptoms, you should consider Lyme disease first. Dr. Cowden also provides advice about dosing, length of treatment, and surprising news about how Lyme is spread — and it’s not only from tick bites. Rites of Passage with Dr. Scott Eberle Aug 05, 2020
    Show notes

In this week’s episode of Be HEALTHistic, Dr. Drew Sinatra welcomes Dr. Scott Eberle, a rites-of-passage guide and hospice physician who offers counseling to those going through major life transitions, and end-of-life care for patients and their families. He is also a guide at the School of Lost Borders, who recently led Dr. Drew on a “wilderness fast.” Today, we explore the ways life forces us to constantly adapt, how to navigate the global crisis that we are all experiencing, and how setting intentions and embracing nature can provide clarity in these uncertain times. First, Scott defines the different phases of a rite-of-passage, and puts this concept in the context of the current coronavirus pandemic. He describes how this worldwide rite-of-passage represented the fastest social, collective death he’s ever seen, what the impact has been of being in a global “in-between” period, and how we can begin to imagine a rebirth. Scott also explains why storytelling is central to the human existence. Next, Dr. Drew focuses on the wilderness fast he went on with Scott as his guide. Scott describes the three sacrifices a person makes when they come on the 12-day outing, why it’s vital to unplug, the importance of setting intentions along the way, and how ceremony plays an essential role in the experience. Dr. Drew shares personal insights from his trip, and Scott explains how shorter “day walks” can be just as powerful in defining intention and finding answers. Finally, Scott talks about his work with individuals as a rites-of-passage guide, and why it’s key to get out in nature every single day. Don’t miss this opportunity to Be HEALTHistic, where Dr. Drew Sinatra and Dr. Scott Eberle examine the shared rites-of-passage we are all experiencing right now.
