    Show notes

In this episode of Be HEALTHistic, we discuss the vital process of detoxification and how it’s an integral part of maintaining optimal health in our highly toxic world. There are many different ways to detoxify, and our doctor duo hosting team of Drs. Steve and Drew Sinatra share safe, natural and effective ways to rid your body of toxins. They also explain the best preventative measures you can take to limit your exposure to the pollutants in the air you breathe, the water you drink and the overall environment you live in. First, the doctors talk about the confusion that arises with the term “detox,” why detoxification is one of Dr. Steve’s “pillars of health” and the main sources of heavy metals that are impacting our health. Next, wonder what’s in the air you breathe? The doctors break down the most common outdoor and indoor pollutants, how to avoid them and some tools that can help. And how about the water you and your family drinks? The Doctors Sinatra address this cause for concern and offer solutions for filtering out the most dangerous chemicals. They also touch upon the toxic amount of medications we are taking, and why we need to trade plastic for glass. Heart Sense for Women Feb 26, 2020
    Show notes

We all know the classic signs of a heart issue — pain in your chest, shortness of breath, numbness in the left arm. But those are mainly warning signs for men; heart disease presents differently in women. In this episode of Be HEALTHistic, Dr. Drew Sinatra welcomes his wife and fellow naturopathic physician, Dr. Briana Sinatra, to discuss the top cardiovascular risk factors women should be aware of, how to best protect your heart, and all the questions you need to ask your doctor. First, the doctors share the lifestyle and biomarker information they gather from patients to get an overall picture of each individual’s cardiovascular health, and suggest the most pertinent screenings you should ask your doctor for. Then, our doctor duo examines some of the red flags that are more common to women, which may be subtle and harder to spot, and why it’s vital to see your doctor when something just doesn’t feel right. Next, the practicing NDs discuss the toll emotions can take as women enter into new life stages, how menopause and hormonal changes also impact the body, and the importance of having the proper self-care tools to reduce stress — including exercise, reading, meditation, massage or a bath. Lifestyle factors can have a tremendous impact on cardiovascular health, and the Doctors Sinatra share strategies and anecdotes that can help. Finally, they recommend the best nutraceuticals to support a healthy heart, explain why intermittent fasting may be key for some women, and why it’s crucial to “know your numbers.” Don’t miss this Heart Awareness Month episode of Be HEALTHistic, where Drs. Drew and Briana Sinatra shine a light on the importance of cardiovascular health in women.

Better Health Takes Guts Feb 19, 2020
    Show notes

In this episode of Be HEALTHistic, our father-and-son doctor hosts, Drs. Steve and Drew Sinatra, explain why better health is directly connected to the gut. The wellness of your digestive and gastrointestinal system has a tremendous impact on your overall health — from how you think and feel, to the performance of your heart, brain, skin, joints and more. First, the doctors define the term “microbiome” and discuss why GI issues are on the rise today. Next, they talk about the gut’s connection to the heart, brain and other systems in the body, and why diet is such a key factor. The doctors then return to the topic of medications and how they impact your gut, especially the use of antibiotics. Overuse can lead to antibiotic resistance, which is a growing (and frightening) trend. The Sinatras break it down, explain what you need to know, and offer more natural solutions to build up your immunity. And how about those uncomfortable symptoms of GI upset we all experience? Drs. Steve and Drew talk about the signs to look for, what foods have the greatest impact on our gut and what natural treatment options you can try. Finally the doctors talk about probiotics, prebiotics and digestive enzymes — what you need to know to support your gut health, and your child’s gut. And did you know that your state of mind can impact your digestion? Join us in learning new ways to Be HEALTHistic!

    Show notes

In this episode of Be HEALTHistic, we introduce a new series called Ask Dr. Mom and Dr. Dad — which will feature one of our regular hosts, naturopathic physician Dr. Drew Sinatra, and his wife, fellow naturopathic doctor and Healthy Directions expert, Dr. Briana Sinatra. First, the doctors dive into common childhood health concerns, including the myth about feeding a cold vs. starving a fever. The couple then shares advice about fostering fevers, when it’s time to call the doctor, when to turn to OTC meds to reduce fevers, what natural remedies you can also use — and they share their concerns about the gross overuse of antibiotics. Next, they address ear infections and which foods could be making them worse, as well as safe supplements for boosting immunity in kids. The doctors share their favorite home remedy recipes, discuss the benefits of vitamin C, and explain how to do their special warming socks treatment. From there, Drs. Drew and Briana shift gears and examine the “hygiene hypothesis.” In an era of highly-sanitized homes and antibacterial everything, are our kids too clean? They discuss the importance of “proper” handwashing, good bugs (outdoor dirt) vs. bad bugs (indoor germs from airplanes/play centers/school) and the 5-second rule. Finally, the hosts talk about the health benefits of getting our kids to eat fermented foods, and why a diet rich in pro- and prebiotic foods is so important for building a healthy gut. We’re always giving you new ways to Be HEALTHistic!
