WoodSongs 923: Mean Mary and Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards Jun 11, 2018
    Show notes

MEAN MARY isnt mean at all she is known internationally for her lightning-fast fingers, haunting vocals, and intricate story songs. She is an award-winning musician/writer and fan favorite (over 9 million views on her YouTube videos). Deering Banjos named her their Goodtime Ambassador, and Janet Deering describes her banjo playing as giving her "chills. Her latest album is titled Blazing. LAURA CORTESE & THE DANCE CARDS have a vision for their bands sound: bold and elegant, schooled in the lyrical rituals of folk music and backed by grooves that alternately inspire Cajun two-stepping and rock-n-roll hip swagger. Cellist Valerie Thompson (cello/vox), fiddler Jenna Moynihan (fiddle/vox), and bassist Natalie Bohrn (bass/vox) pair their sophisticated string arrangements and rich vocal harmonies to band leader Laura Corteses poignant and powerful singing. The new record California Calling on Compass Records has a wide emotional and sonic scope. WoodSongs Kid: Lake Carver is 8 year fiddle player and vocalist from Mocksville, North Carolina. Lake performs the bluegrass standard Ruby with her brother Brant Wimmer.

WoodSongs 922: The Dustbowl Revival and The Mammals Jun 11, 2018
    Show notes

THE DUSTBOWL REVIVAL is what you could call an American roots orchestra with eight full-time members and they play it all, mashing the sounds of traditional American music into a genre-hopping, time-bending dance party that coaxes new fire out of familiar coal. Their new eponymous album, however, finds the Los Angeles-based ensemble evolving and refining its music. Their always-joyous sound now reveals a more soulful, funky side that exudes deeper emotions and taps a more modern vibe. THE MAMMALS are a high-octane Americana quintet from New Yorks storied Hudson Valley. They carry on the work of Pete Seeger & Woody Guthrie with a deep original repertoire and signature “trad is rad sound. Founded in 2001 by Seegers grandson, Tao, second generation fiddler/singer, Ruth Ungar, and banjo/guitar songsmith, Mike Merenda, The Mammals reemerged in 2017 “stronger than ever (Folk Alley) fronted by Mike + Ruthy along with drums, bass and pedal steel. Known for their jubilant, high-energy shows, The Mammals deftly move from older-than-dirt banjo duets to sound-the-alarm topical fare thats right in line with the times, bouncing from roof raising hoe-downs to hear-a-pin-drop a cappella balladry. Their new album is titled Sunshiner. WoodSongs Kids: Eli Patrick & Dreyden Gordon are two young bluegrass musicians from Eastern Kentucky.
