Woodsongs 515: JJ Grey and The Duhks Feb 21, 2009
    Show notes

JJ GREY was born and raised just outside of Jacksonville, Florida. Grey comes from a long tradition of Southern musical storytellers. Like the best of the great Southern writers, he fills his songs with details that are at once vivid and personal, political and universal. THE DUHKS based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the band has been hailed by The New York Times as one of the artists at the forefront of the neo-folk movement. The band's spot-on fusion of traditional bluegrass, folk rock, Afro-Cuban jazz and soul have earned them a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Country Vocal Performance category as well as a Juno award in their native Canada.

Woodsongs 514: Tannahill Weavers and Lambchop Feb 21, 2009
    Show notes

THE TANNAHILL WEAVERS are one of Scotland's premier traditional bands. Named for the town's historic weaving industry and local poet laureate Robert Tannahill, the group has made an international name for its special brand of Scottish music, blending the beauty of traditional melodies with the power of modern rhythms. LAMBCHOP is an alternative band based in Nashville. The unique, unclassifiable hybrid of country, soul, and jazz is a baroque beauty held together by the surreal lyrical wit and droll vocal presence of frontman Kurt Wagner. Their latest CD "OH" (Ohio) continues their tradition of releasing challenging, mold-breaking records.

Woodsongs 476: The SteelDrivers and Carrie Newcomer Mar 29, 2008
    Show notes

THE STEELDRIVERS play what might be called bluegrass soul. Imagine a great bluegrass band playing with, say, Joe Cocker singing. You read right. The band is comprised of a group of veteran Nashville session players that have innumerable hits, cuts, and licks to their credit. They will be performing material from their self-titled debut CD on Rounder Records. CARRIE NEWCOMER returns to the WoodSongs stage to perform material from her latest release The Geography of Light, her 11th release, also on Rounder Records. A native of Bloomington, Indiana, this critically acclaimed singer/songwriter is considered one of the definitive voices of the heartland. She has been an artist, a teacher, a truck stop waitress, a single mother, an activist and writes and sings about the human condition with compassion and clarity.
