    WoodSongs 933: Glen Phillips & Mipso Oct 25, 2018
    Show notes

GLEN PHILLIPS has been making music for over two decades, starting as the 14-year-old frontman of Toad the Wet Sprocket. Since then, hes accumulated an esteemed body of work comprising eight albums with Toad (which collectively have sold close to 4 million units) and three as a solo artist. Swallowed By The New, on Compass Records, is the most intensely personal album of his career, reflecting his mastery for converting raw emotion into sound. Taking on lifes difficult transitions, Phillips delivers some of his most vulnerable songs yet. MIPSOis an acclaimed indie-Americana quartet from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Recently recognized by Rolling Stone as an Artist You Need to Know, the band ventures ever-further from its string-band pedigree to discover a broader Americana where classic folk-rock and modern alt-country sounds mingle easily with Appalachian tradition. Their fifth album, Edges Run, is lush and forward moving, with lyrics that sear and salve in turn..

WoodSongs 932: Ashley Campbell and Lillie Mae Jul 24, 2018
    Show notes

ASHLEY CAMPBELL is a triple threat songwriter, singer and banjo virtuoso. Following in the footsteps of a famous parent is never an easy path, and Ashley, the daughter of music legend Glen Campbell, initially pursued dance and acting. But when Ashley was asked to learn banjo for a part in a play, a spark was lit and her calling was found. Soon Ashley was studying with banjo luminary Carl Jackson (her godfather and longtime member of Glen's band) and mastering her technique. Ashley co-wrote all thirteen songs on her debut album 'The Lonely One', chronicling a personal journey - by turns bold, reflective and brazenly funny - of a young woman grappling with grown up choices. LILLIE MAE has been singing and playing on stages across the country since she could stand on her own two feet. ‘Forever and Then Some’, her much anticipated Third Man Records debut, sees the Nashville-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist weaving her own extraordinary experiences with the myriad strains of Americana to create a breathtaking song cycle of romance and struggle, solitude and adventure. Produced by multiple GRAMMY® Award-winner Jack White III at Third Man Studio in Nashville, the album affirms Lillie Mae as a remarkably gifted musical storyteller, a bright new star that’s been here all along. WoodSongs Kid: Kate Ward is a fifteen-year-old fiddler from Kuttawa, Kentucky. Kate is a staff fiddler at the Kentucky Opry and she has competed in numerous fiddle across the country.

WoodSongs 931: Rosie & The Riveters and Kyle Dillingham & Horseshoe Road Jul 24, 2018
    Show notes

ROSIE & THE RIVETERS vintage-inspired folk anthems paint a portrait of a woman’s voice in a man’s world. The Canadian trio’s unmistakable red lipstick and pin curls may be deceiving, but don't be fooled - this not a throwback band. Their 2015 breakout record, ‘Good Clean Fun!’, brought them sold-out tours, awards, nominations, a performance for British royalty and national airplay in Canada. Their latest album, ‘Ms. Behave’, is a collection of gritty, sultry songs that feature playfully defiant lyrics and confident talk-back harmonies that empower and challenge. KYLE DILLINGHAM is a world renowned fiddle sensation and Oklahoma Musical Ambassador. Dillingham has over 20 years of international experience with performances in 36 countries. The Enid native picked up the violin when he was nine, and eight years later, he gave two featured performances at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. On stage with his band Horseshoe Road, the group's eclectic style rooted in Bluegrass and Western Swing is full of surprises. WoodSongs Kid: Olivia Moore and Jack Lynch are both twelve-year-old and from Frankfort, Kentucky. They’ve been playing together since grade school.

WoodSongs 930: Chris Barron and Kim Richey Jul 24, 2018

CHRIS BARRON is the acclaimed Spin Doctors frontman. A four-album hot streak in the ’90s established them as a heavyweight of the era with 1991’s five-times-platinum Pocket Full of Kryptonite’ ruling the airwaves with hits “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” and “Two Princes”. Barron is now a veteran approaching 50, living in a world changed beyond recognition, compelled to write the music that chronicles the here-and-now. This two-time Grammy-nominated artist is a storyteller; a weaver of emotions and a tugger of heartstrings. Tender, poetic and aching with life’s truths, Kim’s songs transport you to her world, where words paint pictures and melodies touch the soul. After a nearly five year hiatus, Richey returns with her eighth studio album, ‘Edgeland’. The term “Edgeland” is defined as the lost zone between urban and rural environments, a concept which mimics Richey’s constant fluctuation between the rigid genre definitions of country and Americana music. WoodSongs Kid: Aisley Stuebs is an aspiring sixteen-year-old Singer/Songwriter from Lexington, Kentucky.

WoodSongs 929: Janiva Magness and The Reverend Shawn Amos Jul 24, 2018
    Show notes

JANIVA MAGNESS has one of the preeminent voices in contemporary American roots music. After Magness added a 2016 Grammy nomination to her 26 Blues Music Award nominations — with seven wins, including Entertainer of the Year — she might have taken at least a short rest on her laurels. Instead, she raised the bar for herself. Magness’ 14th album, ‘Love Is an Army’, is a brilliantly crafted bridge between the past and present, blending the echoes of classic soul and Americana music with timeless themes of love and the very contemporary sound of protest. THE REVEREND SHAWN AMOS is Los Angeles-based soul brother number one. The Rev’s distinctive blend of black roots music, R & B, and stripped down rock n’ roll brings a bracing, soul-deep musical experience to audiences starved for authenticity, for connection. His mission to preach joyful blues to the world continues on his third album ‘The Reverend Shawn Amos Breaks It Down’. He calls the album a collection of 21st century Freedom Songs. WoodSongs Kid: Emily Reed is a 15-year-old ukulele player and singer from Frankfort, Kentucky.
