Hi – mine name is Jim James and I’m your host. In 2019 I started this podcast to help entrepreneurs learn from one another. When I started the Entrepreneurs Organization chapter in Beijing, I realized that the best insights came from people who had already done the work.

If you’re running a business; this show is my gift to you. It’s hard enough as it is, and I hope that this podcast solves just one problem to help you on your way.

Which 8,000 companies offer free martech tools and how to use them? Aug 27, 2020

Scott Brinker explains the 2nd golden age of martech, and why freemium models mean there are close to 8,000 companies offering free software to business owners to get their companies noticed. Scott shares which 4 key capabilities all companies should adopt, and talks about how marketing apps are transitioning to platforms which are easy for business owners to use. As we know over 96% of all companies are less than 150 staff, so these apps are for SME's and level the playing field with the Fortune 500.

Scott is VP Platform Ecosystem at HubSpot; Editor at chiefmartec.com; Program Chair of MarTech. You can find the articles and directory of the 8,000 at Chiefmartec.

What are the 3 key elements of international press release distribution? Aug 27, 2020
    Show notes

    Get Noticed! Send a text.

In this episode, I share tips as my own agency prepares to send press releases from one client in America to media in China and Japan. Press release activity requires 3 main considerations: content, channels and timing.
We've issued releases for clients since 1995, and so I share our approach to press release writing, media engagement and when to send out releases; especially as in this case we are issuing across multiple timezones and multiple languages which add extra complexity. The questions I ask though, apply regardless of where the media is, or how many you intend to talk to.
Companies I mention include Visme, Cision, Statista, Prowly.

Are you scaring away 59% of your customers. This is what you can do about it. Aug 25, 2020

Good grammar is a brand ambassador. So are you taking care of your brand by ensuring that your company is writing correctly, not just in English but in any language?
Trailer for the full show here.
A UK study revealed that 59 per cent of Britons would not use a company that had obvious grammatical or spelling mistakes on its website or marketing material, and 82 per cent would not use a company that had not correctly translated its material into English. I think these numbers would be the same anywhere in the world.
It's so simple to solve this problem with services which I will detail including Grammarly, Ginger and ProWritingAid. Perhaps the best known is Grammarly founded by Alex Shevchenko and Max Lytvyn in 2009. These services are in English, so do share with me
For our French listeners, http://scribens.fr/, BonPatron.com, or for international language checkers who are human, check out Lang-8. I think that you will get the idea, these checkers are available for all languages.

Is your signage as stale as an old loaf? If so your business could be toast! Aug 24, 2020
    Show notes

One near-universal law of psychology is habituation, which means that we stop noticing things we see or hear many times. This applies to company signage too, and as we come out of COVID lockdown we need to refresh the signage which we use to promote our business and to educate staff, partners and customers.
Research by the University of Cincinnati showed tangible improvements in business due to signage upgrades by up to 10%. This means that to gain attention we need to keep our signage fresh to avoid habituation, but that the costs should pay for themselves.
