    The UnNoticed Entrepreneur

Fellow entrepreneurs share their stories so that us so that we can build a better business.

Hi – mine name is Jim James and I’m your host. In 2019 I started this podcast to help entrepreneurs learn from one another. When I started the Entrepreneurs Organization chapter in Beijing, I realized that the best insights came from people who had already done the work.

If you’re running a business; this show is my gift to you. It’s hard enough as it is, and I hope that this podcast solves just one problem to help you on your way.

The 5 stages of building a tribe, and 8 elements of telling the story of the tribe. Sep 12, 2020

Communication by the leader of any tribe is the foundation for success because without everyone understanding the vision and the purpose of the tribe it is destined to fail. On this episode I share the 5 stages an organization passes through on the path from crowd to tribe, and 8 essential elements for the language of the tribe to resonate within and beyond the organization.
Seth Godin says, “A crowd is a tribe without a leader. A crowd is a tribe without communication. Most organizations spend their time marketing to the crowd. Smart organizations assemble the tribe."

The Five Stages of Workplace “Tribes,” by DAVE LOGAN AND HALEE FISCHER-WRIGHT, AUTHORS OF TRIBAL LEADERSHIP: LEVERAGING NATURAL GROUPS TO BUILD A THRIVING ORGANIZATION

    • Stage One: These tribes are distinguished by hostility and despair. Their members say things like "Life sucks."

    • Stage Two: These tribes are characterized by apathy and a sense of futility. They don't try, they don't care, they don't innovate, they don't hold one another accountable for anything, and they revel in their disengagement. Their members say things like "My life sucks."

    • Stage Three: Tribal members are selfish at this stage. They are in it for themselves, and they are extremely averse to collaboration. Their attitude is "I'm great . . . and you're not."

    • Stage Four: Tribe members have a sense of shared values; they willingly share knowledge and collaborate. Stage-four tribes are extremely competitive, but their competitive focus shifts to other tribes or companies. These tribes believe that "We're great . . . and they're not."

    • Stage Five: Tribes that attain this rare level are characterized by a sense of "innocent wonderment." They apply themselves to the creation of things no one has dreamed of and are frequently incredibly successful. These tribes say that "Life is great."

Treat customers as if they are deaf. How to solve the impact of PPE on communications. Sep 11, 2020
    Show notes

    Get Noticed! Send a text.

I think we need to change the way we deal with people when everyone is wearing PPE; treat customers as if they are impaired. Frustrations abound when we can't hear what the other person is saying due to masks and screens, and when glasses mist up stopping people being able to read text on signage or documents like menus or order forms.
In this episode, I share experiences on how Asian companies give customers instructions without anyone saying them, and the value of raised paving stones for the blind.
I am sharing some practical ideas on how companies can help staff, partners and customers to feel confident and relaxed in their establishments.

When should you trademark your brand or product when considering public relations? Sep 07, 2020
    Show notes

    Get Noticed! Send a text.

If you are building a brand, and it's not protected, you are leaving your company exposed on 2 fronts; you are ignoring a source of potential revenue but you are also in danger of building the brand for someone else to take it from you.
This is a trailer for the full show.
On this show I share about the trade mark protection process which I am undertaking for the SPEAK|pr program of masterminds, including this podcast which now is in the top 20% of all podcast shows (according to Libsyn rankings). I share considerations for any business owner to register their trade marks and the costs of doing so; along with some cautionary notes on not doing so e.g. Apple had to pay $60 million for the iPad trademark in China because another entity had registered it first.
Key point to remember: Intellectual property works on “first to file” basis (whoever protects it first gets the rights). mention these firms which can help with global IP protection: AbelImray and Rouse.

How to take the stress out of returning to school in COVID times. Sep 04, 2020
    Show notes

    Get Noticed! Send a text.

There are some simple ways that schools can keep everyone calm during COVID times, and that is by using the same techniques companies use for crisis management. In this episode, I will share best practice deployed by corporations and also from my experiences of how the schools in China handled the daily crisis of pollution impacting schools.
There is plenty of documentation online to help prepare. In the UK the Government has developed the Digital Resilience Framework and publishes guidance to schools, and schools too are sharing openly like Singapore the American School. I share the work being done by the Girls Day School Trust which is using Issu online magazine software to share information.
Crisis management is all about continuity, and I share practical guidance on how to create timed, structured and coherent plans for schools and other organizations as we head back to school and work, and show our kids that we've got this crisis under control; relax and have fun.
