Episode 159: Bodies Bodies Bodies Oct 09, 2023

Show notes

Spooky Linings continues this week on the show as we're exploring our Bodies Bodies Bodies. Is this Gen Z's very own Scream or just another try-hard horror flick? It's tough to say what this movie's longevity will be, but all we can say right now is that it's, at the very least, enjoyable. So grab your Xanax and put on your glow stick bracelets cause we're covering every inch of this one. We also get into the discourse of sex scenes in movies, Zaxby's creepily named menu items, Mallie's "slap bet" reign of terror, Maria Bakalova almost singlehandedly bringing down Rudy Giuliani, and plenty more. Slay, queen.
Bodies Bodies Bodies stars Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Myha'la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders, Rachel Sennott, Lee Pace, Pete Davidson, and Conner O'Malley. Directed by Halina Reijn.

Episode 158: The Exorcist III Oct 02, 2023

Show notes

With a new Exorcist movie getting a theatrical release this week, we thought there was no better way to kick off our Spooky Linings month than with a retrospective look at the only good sequel to the original. It's of course 1990's The Exorcist III. A slow burn, pseudo neo-noir film with a truly dreadful tone that is only hindered by its insistence at telling instead of showing. That being said, this one is definitely worth your time. Put on your straight jacket, climb around on the ceiling, and shut your goddamn mouth! (respectfully) as we crack open this wild ride of a movie, along with all those insane cameos in the Heaven scene, why William Friedkin (R.I.P.) was one of the greatest haters of all time, using Imagine Dragons songs as mnemonic devices for movie titles, and a hell of a lot more.
The Exorcist III stars George C. Scott, Ed Flanders, Jason Miller, Scott Wilson, Nicol Williamson, and Brad Dourif. Directed by William Peter Blatty.

Episode 157: The Whale Sep 25, 2023

Show notes

After a much needed break, we're rejuvenated, refreshed, and ready to kick off Season 7. And what better movie to be energized to discuss than one where the protagonist sits on a couch the whole time? In keeping with tradition, we're discussing yet another Aronofsky movie for our season premiere, and this time it's 2022's The Whale. A powerful yet divisive film from Aronofsky, so there's certainly a lot to talk about. So grab some KFC and kick up your feet as we discuss the movie, plus the incredible return of the great Brendan Fraser, the fallacy in logic with Jehovah's Witnesses, recasting this movie with the leads of Succession, and much, much more. It's good to be back!
The Whale stars Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, Samantha Morton, and Sathya Sridharan. Directed by Darren Aronofsky.

Episode 156: Malignant Mar 20, 2023

Show notes

We're closing up shop for the season, but not before talking about one of our favorite movies from the last few years. It's the "sometimes maligned, sometimes adored" Malignant from James Wan. A very divisive film that some audiences either didn't get, didn't have the time for, or simply didn't approve, but for those who embraced it, they found an absolute gem. And we've got an episode so good it'll make you want to tear your hair out. So slip on your giallo gloves and crawl into bed with us as we crack open this incredible movie to discuss all things Gabriel, plus the stigma of Mountain Dew, the "horror goatse", doctors with catch phrases, Malignant vs. M3gan, and much, much more!
And, as always, thanks for another great season of TSLP. See you on the other side for Season 7!
Malignant stars Annabelle Wallis, George Young, Jake Abel, Maddie Hasson, Michole Briana White, Jacqueline McKenzie, Ingrid Bisu, Jon Lee Brody, Paula Marshall, Patrick Cox, Rachel Winfree, and Paul Mabon. Directed by James Wan.

Episode 155: The Menu Mar 13, 2023

Show notes

In our penultimate episode of the season, we're pulling up a chair to the table as we devour 2022’s The Menu. This sleek, stylish, and sophisticated tale of the elites getting what's coming to them has a rich layer of humor and terror that's worthy of your attention. So tuck that napkin into your shirt and grab your utensils as we crack open this great movie to talk about it all, as well as the magic of eating fast food as a kid, Elon Musk's secret plan to kill us all (allegedly), why Steven Segal was the worst SNL host ever, and other great discussions. Plus, Mallie plays the banjo! All of that and more, but we have to beg of you one thing. It's just one. Do not listen. Hear. Savor. Relish. Consider every word that you place inside your ears. Be mindful. But do not listen. Our episode is too precious for that.
The Menu stars Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, Judith Light, John Leguizamo, Rob Yang, Mark St. Cyr, Reed Birney, Aimee Carrero, and Arturo Castro. Directed by Mark Mylod.

Episode 154: Paranormal Activity 2 (with Ashley McGlothren of Southern Haunts) Mar 06, 2023

Show notes

Somehow Paranormal Activity 2 was a huge success (at least in terms of box office revenue) despite being a dreadfully boring movie. That being said, this may be one of the funniest movies of 2010 - unintentionally, of course. We welcome returning guest Ashley McGlothren as we crack open this film to discuss it all: which fast food chain has the worst french fries, creepy kids toys, swingers with pineapples, and of course: the Cheez-It casserole. So grab a bag of your favorite Dorito's and maybe some Burger King (man, lots of food talk in this episode) and listen now!

Paranormal Activity 2 stars Micah Sloat, Katie Featherston, Sprague Grayden, Brian Boland, Molly Ephraim, and Vivis. Directed by Tod Williams.

Episode 153: No Time to Die Feb 27, 2023

Show notes

This week on the program, grab your Dou Dou and pour yourself a martini cause we're once again saddling up next to Daniel Craig in his Aston Martin DB5 as we discuss James Bond's ultimate swan song with 2021's No Time to Die. With a troubled production and constant delays, this one has no right to be as good as it is. And while we acknowledge that sometimes things don't necessarily work, the film still manages to resonate with just the right amount of melancholy and hope. We'll cover every nook and cranny of this movie, plus discuss jungle showers and bidets, filing your taxes as a henchman, the TSLP kimono (merch design pending), and much more. And while we hope you enjoy this episode while it's still hot, there's no need to hurry; you have all the time in the world.

No Time to Die stars Daniel Craig, Léa Seydoux, Lashana Lynch, Ralph Fiennes, Christoph Waltz, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Rami Malek, Jeffrey Wright, Ana de Armas, Billy Magnussen, Rory Kinnear, and David Dencik. Directed by Cari Fukunaga.

Episode 152: The Banshees of Inisherin Feb 20, 2023

Show notes

With the Academy Awards less than a month away, we're taking a look at one of the most interesting feckin' films of last year that has a lot to say about grief, friendship, and legacy; it's The Banshees of Inisherin from director Martin McDonagh. While we haven't discussed one of his movies since all the way back in Season 1 with In Bruges, we're back in familiar territory, and McDonagh has only gotten better as a storyteller. Grab a pint and kick your feet up with your favorite furry friend as we discuss the film, plus the troubles with tandem parking, how we - as a nation - allowed Larry the Cable Guy to happen, the acceptable cash limit for concert tickets, and so much more!
The Banshees of Inisherin stars Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan. Directed by Martin McDonagh.

Episode 151: Basic Instinct (with Ashley McGlothren of Southern Haunts) Feb 13, 2023

Show notes

We're finally diving into the insane world of Paul Verhoeven with a steamy erotic thriller from the '90s. Of course we're talking about none other than 1992's Basic Instinct! A greasy Michael Douglas tripping over himself to try and bed a young Sharon Stone; what's not to love? Well, a lot, actually. So uncross your legs and get comfortable cause we're spreading this one open to talk about it all, including the movie's striking similarities to Gone Girl, the ultimate tip for douchebag interior decorating, being stuck in a room alone with Steven Spielberg, and plenty more with returning guest Ashley McGlothren!

Episode 150: The Terminator (with Josh Browning of The VHS Files) Feb 06, 2023

Show notes

We told you we'd be back, and we weren't lying. That's right; this week we're revisiting the one that started it all: 1984's The Terminator from director James Cameron. If you can even believe it, before he committed himself to the Pandorian dirt, Cameron was a pioneer of auteurism with his incredible ability to make a dollar out of pennies. Does this one stand the test of time? We'll find out. So get yourself a couple cans short of a six pack and put on your dark sunglasses cause we're dissecting the film and talking all about accepting fake city geography, Terminator iguanas, the '90s Doctor Strange movie, and a ton of other great topics with returning guest Josh Browning. Listen now if you want to live.
You can check out The VHS Files on YouTube and Apple Podcasts.
The Terminator stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, Linda Hamilton, and Paul Winfield. Directed by James Cameron.
