Episode 139: The Fast and the Furious Nov 21, 2022

Show notes

It's Thanksgiving week, so you know we gotta talk about family. And what better franchise to do so with than the one that is now synonymous with family. That's right, we're of course talking about the one that started it all: The Fast and the Furious from 2001. A Point Break remake that has it all: girls, guns, and a glistening Vin Diesel. So buckle up and injest this episode right into your veins like Nos in a cheap Mitsubishi as Nathan and Dustin discuss everything from the outrageous price for a 6 pack of Corona nowadays, the insane subtitles used on Amazon for the film, the poor decision of naming this drag racing competition "Race Wars", and much much more.
The Fast and the Furious stars Jordana Brewster, Rick Yune, Michelle Rodriguez, Paul Walker, and Vin Diesel. Directed by Rob Cohen.

Episode 138: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story Nov 14, 2022

Show notes

There's two things you need to know about our show; we're the king of podcasts, and number two is LOOK OUT, man! This week's episode is none other than the great Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story! No biopic since has been able to shake the comparison to this absolute classic; and for good reason - this movie is perfect and nails the formula in the best possible way. While we try our best to avoid falling into the trap of just quoting and retelling the funniest parts of the movie, buckle up for some insufferable Beatles and Elvis impressions. Much like Dewey reflecting on his entire life throughout the film, we'll reflect on all of the aspects that make this one of the best comedies of all time, as well as fascinating stories about Magic Alex, the worst prank to play with Christmas gifts, Dustin's absolute contempt for musicals, and much, much more.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story stars John C. Reilly, Jenna Fischer, Raymond J. Barry, Kristen Wiig, Tim Meadows, Harold Ramis, and Chris Parnell. Directed by Jake Kasdan.

Episode 137: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (with John Houzer) Nov 07, 2022

Show notes

Our Spooky Linings month has sadly come to an end, but that doesn't mean the chills and thrills need to as well! So let's discuss a movie with some of our spooky residuals left over: it's 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (also known as Doctor Strange and the American Macguffin.) Kevin Feige lets Sam Raimi shine (for about 7 minutes) in his return to the MCU in this somewhat uneven sequel. Why is Doctor Strange regulated to being a supporting character to every other superhero, even in his own movie? We'll try our best to get to the bottom of it with returning guest John "Houzer" Smith. Plus, getting Michael Stuhlbarg's agent a raise, putting the screenwriter for Saw 3D on blast, Murder, Inc. Strange and the Book of Ashanta, and much, much more await you on the other side of this incursion.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Julian Hilliard, and Jett Klyne. Directed by Sam Raimi.

Episode 136: Halloween Ends (with JT Kelly) Oct 31, 2022

Show notes

We were lucky this year gave us an extra Monday in October so we could have one final Spooky Linings for the season. And while it's not a film that meets our criteria per se, we couldn't help but squeeze Halloween Ends into the mold. It's the final chapter in the Laurie Strode timeline, and we need to talk about it. So strap in for a huge episode on this very polarizing movie as we discuss a lot of love, including Corey's strange love of milk, Mallie's love for children dying on screen, step-dads that love Step Up, and plenty more with returning guest/Michael Myers protégé JT Kelly. And remember: if you ask for no salt on your fries at McDonalds, they have to make them fresh.
Halloween Ends stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Kyle Richards, James Jude Courtney, Rohan Campbell, and Omar J. Dorsey. Directed by David Gordon Green.

Episode 135: Final Destination 2 (with Brandi Dewberry and Jenn Paulemon) Oct 24, 2022

Show notes

Psycho ruined showers, Jaws ruined the beach, and this one ruined logging trucks. That's right; we're keeping the 2 train rolling with another sequel to a beloved (maybe?) franchise: it's 2003's Final Destination 2! The hijinks are cranked up to 11, there's plenty of gore, and this one has some of the best laugh-out-loud moments in any horror movie this side of the highway. We'll cover it all, in addition to discussions on being horny for your friend's dad on main, getting rolled back at the Walmart Mortuary, the new scent from Febreze (Pine Trees and Flesh), and a ton of other great stuff, including the return of Mark! All of that and more with returning guests Brandi and Jenn.
Final Destination 2 stars Keegan Connor, Jonathan Cherry, A.J. Cook, Ali Larter, David Paetkau, James Kirk, Michael Landes, and Lynda Boyd. Directed by David R. Ellis.

Episode 134: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 Oct 17, 2022

Show notes

Oh, my kid banana! We're onto the next Spooky Lining entry with 1986's very polarizing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. While the original is a masterpiece in filmmaking, especially for low budget horror, the sequel is...different. Dennis Hopper phoning it in, Cannon Films taking a chainsaw to the runtime, and Tobe Hooper amping up the black comedy to 11 all mixed together like a cosmic gumbo (or in this case chili) to create one of the most bizarre entries in the Leatherface franchise. Dustin and Nathan dissect the film, plus they discuss Dustin's X-Men powers, our lord and savior Tubi, Mike Ehermantraut as Lefty, and a lot, lot more. This movie is...well, nobody knows, but the pod...the pod is family.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 stars Bill Moseley, Bill Johnson, Joe Bob Briggs, Jim Siedow, Kinky Friedman, Dennis Hopper, and Lou Perry. Directed by Tobe Hooper.

Episode 133: Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (with JT Kelly) Oct 10, 2022

Show notes

The Spooky Linings keep on rolling, and wouldn't you know it: we're back in familiar territory. It just wouldn't be right if we didn't cover another entry in the Halloween franchise this season, so before Halloween Ends arrives this Thursday, let's go back to when The Boogeyman returned to his throne with 1988's Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers. We've got plenty to talk about in this one, including Jamie's addiction to Mountain Dew, Priests Lives Matter, a leather clad Michael Myers cruising the streets of Chicago, and even Dr. Loomis...but with a hat! All of that and more with our guest guy-who-might-have-heard-of-Michael-Myers-before JT Kelly.
You can find the legend Bucky the Power Plant Worker on Twitter here.
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers stars Donald Pleasence, Ellie Cornell, Danielle Harris, and Michael Pataki. Directed by Dwight H. Little.

Episode 132: Hellraiser (1987) (with JT Kelly) Oct 03, 2022

Show notes

Now that we've gotten the season premiere out of the way, it's time for the best time of the year: the Spooking Linings month! So with the eleventh film (and the first remake) in the franchise on the horizon, let's look back to where it all started with the 1987 original Hellraiser. This movie is a lot, and not in a good way. We're baffled that this franchise has managed to have this much longevity. That being said, we've got plenty to talk about like Julia's incredible sense of fashion, Frank's insatiable appetite for chins, and how the United Kingdom isn't a real place. And of course we play F@#%, Marry, Kill with the Cenobites. All of that and a ton more in our first Spooking Linings episode of 2022 with returning guest JT Kelly.
Hellraiser (1987) stars Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, and Sean Chapman. Directed by Clive Barker.

Episode 131: The Wrestler Sep 26, 2022

Show notes

Season 6 has finally arrived! And while our Aronofsky tradition is starting to come to a close, we've still got (at least) one more to discuss: 2008's The Wrestler. A rough and grimey tale of a past-his-prime wrestler trying to reclaim his former fame is just as a depressing as it sounds, but there's a lot of great topics to discuss, including Colin Duty, bathroom hand soap cologne, New Jersey's inescapability, Mickey Björk, and of course David Arquette: Renaissance Man (this will all make sense once you check out the episode.)

The Wrestler stars Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, and Judah Friedlander. Directed by Darren Aronofsky.

Episode 130: The Thing (1982) Dec 27, 2021

Show notes

We've hinted at it all season long, but in our Season 5 finale, we're going out strong with a film that is absolutely perfect; it's John Carpenter's The Thing from 1982. A tale of paranoia, toxic masculinity, and great facial hair that just feels timeless. Is it Carpenter's best movie? Was Childs assimilated? What happened to Nauls? How many times can we say the words "the Thing" in one episode? We have answers to all of these questions and more in this jam packed episode. Plus, our pitch for a Saturday morning cartoon based on The Thing, remaking this film with the cast of Mean Girls, the wild life of Wilford Brimley, and more are all points of discussion in our final send off of the year before our long hibernation in the arctic.
Happy holidays! See you in Season 6.
The Thing (1982) stars Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, Richard Dysart, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, David Clennon, and Keith David. Directed by John Carpenter.
