Episode 119: Halloween (2018) (with JT Kelly) Oct 11, 2021

Show notes

We’re (finally) on the eve of Halloween Kills, so it seems only fitting that we take a look back at one of the greatest slashers films in recent memory with David Gordon Green’s Halloween from 2018. This movie oozes with style and slick direction, and it’s truly one of the best legesequels around. But there’s so, so much to talk about (as evidenced by the nearly 3 hour runtime of our episode), so as Hawkins tells Sartain in this film: buckle up. Halloween lover-not-expert JT Kelly returns as we have the important discussions like what brand of peanut butter Michael likes best, what’s going on with Gerard Way’s toenails, and our pitch for Halloween: Knives Out starring Daniel Craig and…Daniel Craig. It’s all waiting for you!

Halloween (2018)stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Virginia Gardner, Nick Castle, Miles Robbins, Toby Huss, and Jefferson Hall. Directed by David Gordon Green.

Show notes

With his next film Dune on the horizon, Denis Villeneuve is a director that “doesn’t miss”. And Prisoners is no exception. An incredibly well-paced thriller that covers the difficult subject matter of child abduction, excruciating torture, and toxic masculinity, this is one of best directed, shot, and acted films around. Returning guest Coby Evans joins us to dissect the film and its many facets, plus we ask the big questions: is Hugh Jackman secretly Jason Voorhees? Could Jake Gyllenhaal be any hotter? Is Alex the scamp of the film? Tune in to hear the answers to those questions and more.
Prisoners stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman, Paul Dano, Maria Bello, Melissa Leo, Viola Davis, and Terrence Howard. Directed by Denis Villeneuve.

Episode 116: Under the Cherry Moon Sep 20, 2021

Show notes

Boy, where to start on this one. While Prince is undeniably a musical genius that comes along once a generation, his acting skills…not so much. Is Under the Cherry Moon even a movie? Is Prince the femme fatale of the film? Are Tricky and Christopher brothers, cousins, or lovers? There’s so many questions left unanswered, but we’ll try to figure things out the best we can. Plus, we’ll discuss the insane story behind the movie’s premiere, who should play Prince in the biopic, how James Cameron may have been influenced by the film, and much, much more in this insanely silly episode.
Under the Cherry Moon stars Prince, Jerome Benton, Steven Berkoff, Emmanuelle Sallet, Alexandra Stewart, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Francesca Annis. Directed by Prince.

Episode 115: Promising Young Woman (with Jennie Lee) Sep 13, 2021

Show notes

There are a lot of themes running throughout 2020’s Promising Young Woman; we’re just not sure what the ultimate message is. That being said, this is a film that places an uncomfortable mirror in front of the viewer and forces you to look into it. And we’ll do our best to try to look inward and address the many problems with the film and ourselves with returning guest Jennie Lee. We’ll also discuss the quintessential home decor of your typical East LA douchebag, our Bo Burnham/Freddy Krueger musical pitch, sexist golf clubs, and much more. And lastly; it’s totally okay to not like this movie.
Warning: this episode covers the topics of sexual assault and other acts of domestic abuse. If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual assault or abuse, the National Sexual Assault Hotline is 1-800-656-HOPE (4673).
Promising Young Woman stars Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, Alison Brie, Adam Brody, Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, Laverne Cox, Max Greenfield, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Sam Richardson, Molly Shannon, Clancy Brown, Chris Lowell, and Steve Monroe. Directed by Emerald Fennell.

Episode 114: Resident Evil (with Nick aka "Neptune" of The Resident Evil Podcast) Sep 06, 2021

Show notes

2002’s Resident Evil directed by Paul W. S. Anderson caused a ripple effect amongst the gaming franchise’s fanbase that divided the community seemingly in half. While some appreciate the attempt to expand the property beyond the video game consoles, others ridicule the film for what would come after it; a slew of near-lifeless, uninspired, high budget, schlocky sequels that left a bad taste in many a RE fan’s mouth. That being said, there’s still a lot of good in Anderson’s first outing that needs to be reevaluated. So as the release of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City draws ever near, we’re doing just that. Come along with us as we discuss Nathan’s love for Korn, which celebrity would most likely be the Wesker of real life, sentient blood, and a plethora of other insane topics all while joined by esteemed guest and Resident Evil guru Nick (better known as Neptune) from The Resident Evil Podcast!
Resident Evil stars Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius, James Purefoy, and Martin Crewes. Directed by Paul W. S. Anderson.

Show notes

Well, bitch, summer is coming to an end, and what better way to close it out than by discussing the massive summer blockbuster - and incredibly dreadful - Freddy vs. Jason from 2003? So much happens in this 97 minute flick that it took us almost twice as long to dissect it all, so strap in for a wild ride as we discuss everything from magician cops to pegging for feminism, from Freddy wielding the Infinity Gauntlet to objectively the worst 30 seconds in movie history and a hell of a lot more with returning guests Brandi & Jenn!
Freddy vs. Jason stars Monica Keena, Kelly Rowland, Jason Ritter, Chris Marquette, Lochlyn Munro, and Robert Englund. Directed by Ronny Yu.

Episode 112: Sleepers Aug 23, 2021

Show notes

Who doesn’t love an aptly named movie? 1996’s Sleepers is a 2 hour and 27 minute film with about 12 minutes of story - and even those 12 minutes are virtually unbearable. But that’s not to say there aren’t some wild moments to talk about. In this week’s episode, we’ll cover the movie in full plus the undeniable similarities it shares with a famous Stephen King property, the uselessness of the “based on a true story” marketing trope, and the time Dustin drank holy water. All of that and more awaits!
Warning: the film Sleepers deals with the topic of child abuse and pedophilia, and our episode covers those subjects in context with how the movie portrays them.
Sleepers stars Dustin Hoffman, Minnie Driver, Robert De Niro, Kevin Bacon, Jason Patric, and Brad Pitt. Directed by Barry Levinson.

Episode 111: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (with Michael Moss) Aug 16, 2021

Show notes

In a world filled with multiple billion dollar movies, they can’t all be The Avengers or The Lord of the Rings. Some of them are (unfortunately) Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. This one has to be in the top 5 dumbest movies of all time - and we’ll dissect every factor that makes it so. So buckle up, because there’s a lot to discuss including the wrong way to adopt a child, putting a stop to Colin Trevorrow, how much a dinosaur would feasibly cost, and so much more in this explosive episode with returning guest Michael Moss.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rafe Spall, Justice Smith, Daniella Pineda, James Cromwell, Isabella Sermon, Toby Jones, Ted Levine, B.D. Wong, Geraldine Chaplin, and Jeff Goldblum. Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona.

Episode 110: Mandy (with Michael Overby) Aug 09, 2021

Show notes

With the recent release of Sir Nicolas Cage’s Pig, it’s time we reevaluate one of the more recent prestige Cage films with the wild ride that is 2018’s Mandy. One-half a psychedelic, slow burn horror film, one-half blood-soaked revenge thriller, this one’s a ton of fun. So take some recreational drugs or pop open that vodka bottle and dive down the rabbit hole with us as we debate which Nic Cage character would win in a battle royale, the most insulting movie ending of all time, the best musical score to write to, and a hell of a lot more with returning guest Michael Overby.
Mandy’s post-credit scene
Mandy stars Nicolas Cage, Andrea Riseborough, Linus Roache, Richard Brake and Bill Duke. Directed by Panos Cosmatos.
