Episode 109: Life (2017) Aug 02, 2021

Show notes

Life’s a funny thing; not this one, though. Despite all the rumors, Life (2017) wasn’t a Venom prequel, nor a secret Cloverfield sequel. It was just…fine. That being said, we have a lot to talk about with this one. Is Joseph Gordon-Levitt a good actor? Does Kim Kardashian have a bathroom secret? What would Jurassic Park look like without the dinosaurs? All of that and more - plus, ya know, some of this movie - is discussed in this out of this world episode.
Life (2017) stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ariyon Bakare, Olga Dihovichnaya, Camiel Warren-Taylor, and Naoko Mori. Directed by Daniel Espinosa.

Episode 108: Planet of the Apes (1968) Jul 26, 2021

Show notes

It’s been 20 years since the remake and 10 since the reboot, so what better time to dive back into the Apes franchise than now? We already covered the remake way back in episode 2, but now we’re finally taking on the original. It’s 1968’s Planet of the Apes - a movie that seems to be ironically making a statement that’s the complete opposite of its intentions. Does this classic sci-fi adventure film hold up? Tune in to find out. Other topics of discussion include Nathan’s immaculate recounting of the sequels, the concept of a “dad movie”, lower jaw acting, and much much more. So get your stinkin’ paws on this episode, you damn dirty listener!
Planet of the Apes (1968) stars Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans, Charlton Heston, Linda Harrison, and Kim Hunter. Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner.

Episode 107: Casino Royale (with John Hoffler Jr.) Jul 19, 2021

Show notes

Finally, after years apart, we’re back in the universe of Jimmy - no, wait - James Bond. And with No Time to Die (hopefully) on the horizon, we thought now would be a great time to break open the massive blockbuster that is Casino Royale and see what it’s all about with a special crossover featuring the host of the ohsix/ohseven podcast and returning guest Johnny “Utah” Hoffler Jr. If you play your cards right, you may just hear us discuss the power of Fernet Branca, what M’s real name is, how Pierce Brosnan pronounces “mojito”, the ultimate Fast Saga crossover pitch, and so much more in this epically long episode. You asked for it, so we delivered.
Casino Royale stars Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Judi Dench, Jeffrey Wright, Giancarlo Giannini, and Mads Mikkelsen. Directed by Martin Campbell.

Episode 106: Angel Heart Jul 12, 2021

Show notes

If you thought last week’s movie was an odd one, wait until you feast your eyes on 1987’s Angel Heart. Somehow simultaneously boring as sin and yet fascinatingly weird, this one’s got plenty to talk about - and we’ll do just that. So hop on the elevator that’s only going down as we discuss Dustin’s Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa stories, Chekov’s gumbo, the best part of every diner, and a hell (pun intended) of a lot more.
Angel Heart stars Mickey Rourke, Stocker Fontelieu, Lisa Bonet, Robert De Niro, Brownie McGhee, and Charlotte Rampling. Directed by Alan Parker.

Episode 105: Pi Jul 05, 2021

Show notes

We’re back in the saddle with the premiere of Season 5, and in keeping with our Aronofsky tradition, we kick off the season by doing some long division to try to find the end result of Pi. Did this film indirectly influence The Matrix? What’s going on with those ants? And why did so many metal bands from the early 2000s sample this movie? We’ll get to the bottom of all of that, plus we’ll discuss the theory that Mark Margolis is a vampire, the laws regarding wearing a hat in your dreams, the strange distribution rights to Phantasm II, and so much more. And to top it all off, we’ll introduce our new permanent co-host (and fantastic past guest) Nathan Simmons. It’s about to get weird, y’all.
Pi stars Ben Shenkman, Sean Gullette, Stephen Pearlman, Mark Margolis, and Pamela Hart. Directed by Darren Aronofsky.
