Episode 148: Men Jan 23, 2023

Show notes

Alex Garland is known for very cerebral, thought-provoking screenplays, and while 2022's Men are both of those things, the film (frustratingly) doesn't seem to commit to anything in particular. That being said, this one has a lot to offer; beautifully haunting atmosphere, a powerhouse performance from Jessie Buckley, and a score that's out of this world. We'll discuss all of that and more, including wine moms drunk at the movies, the horrors of staying at an Airbnb, poor TV placement on furniture, and other seemingly benign topics.
Men stars Jessie Buckley, Rory Kinnear, Paapa Essiedu, and Gayle Rankin. Directed by Alex Garland.

Good luck; the movie has been lost to time, it seems. But don't worry, dear listener; we're here to tell you all about it, and this is one you probably don't need to see. So put on your reversible jackets and grab your Jones Cream Soda because we've got a lot to discuss, including Neil LaBute's apparent issues with women, the problem with art students, and the return of the Dorito's discussion. All of this and more with your hosts Dustin, Mallie, and Jathan, plus returning guest Ashley McGlothren!

Episode 146: Wishmaster Jan 09, 2023

Show notes

This week on the program, we're granting the wishes for those of you who want more schlocky horror movies covered on the show. This time it's none other than 1997's Wishmaster. Candyman, Jason, and Freddy all starring in the same flick? Well...sort of. Tune in as Dustin and Nathan choose their words carefully while they discuss the movie, plus the worst name to yell when you're panicking, what defines a "wish", the struggles with becoming a GMILF, and more callbacks than you can shake a stick at. If you can't beat them, burn them, bay-beeee!
Wishmaster stars Tammy Lauren, Andrew Divoff, Kane Hodder, Tony Todd, and Robert Englund. Directed by Robert Kurtzman.

Show notes

Even though we're officially beyond Christmas, you've still got one last present to open from your friends at The Silver Linings Playlist. What better time than now to discuss the "forbidden" Batman movie? That's right, we're diving into 1992's Batman Returns from Tim Burton. Let us fill your void as we discuss all the great moments in this jam-packed episode. Plus, topics on how a certain former president modeled his entire persona after Max Shreck, Mr. Freeze's secret cameo, the McDonalds Happy Meal tie-in fiasco, and much more are all waiting for you.

Episode 143: 365 Days Dec 19, 2022

Show notes

We've covered some bad movies on this show during our 6-year run, but nothing has even come close to this. For the first time ever, we are asking - nay, imploring - you all not to watch this movie before hearing our episode (or even afterwards.) 365 Days is pure, unadulterated garbage, and not just in its poor direction and performances; it sets a dangerous precedent. With all that being said, we do our best to bring you the same energetic, fun, and silly podcast for your listening pleasure. So strap in as we discuss the paper-thin plot, plus why you can't make the beach sexy, AI generated music, getting Zapruder'd with a magic bullet, and a ton more. Again, please don't watch this movie.
Warning: this episode covers the topics of sexual assault, Stockholm Syndrome, and other acts of domestic abuse. If you or someone you know is experiencing anything related to these acts, we encourage you to seek help. The National Sexual Assault Hotline can be reached 24/7 at 1-800-656-4673 and the National Domestic Violence Hotline can also be reached 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233.
365 Days stars Anna-Maria Sieklucka, Michele Morrone, Bronisław Wrocławski, Otar Saralidze, Magdalena Lamparska, and Natasza Urbańska. Directed by Barbara Bialowas and Tomasz Mandes.

Episode 142: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Dec 12, 2022

Show notes

If you can believe it, this week marks the 20th anniversary of the release of one of the greatest films of all time. We're of course talking about The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers from the great Peter Jackson. What more can be said about this movie that hasn't been said a thousand times over already? Well, apparently, we've got 2 hours’ worth of things to say. So grab your pipe-weed, mount your warg, and ride out with us as we tear into the movie along with discussions about where to put the one F-bomb in each film of the trilogy, Nancy Reagan's role in the film, our thoughts on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1, and a ton more.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers stars Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Liv Tyler, Christopher Lee, Brad Dourif, and Cate Blanchett. Directed by Peter Jackson.

Episode 141: A History of Violence (with Josh Browning of The VHS Files) Dec 05, 2022

Show notes

The violence continues in our episode this week, but in a much less glorified way. That's right, we're back in Cronenberg Town as we crack open 2005's A History of Violence. While there's much less body horror to be found in this one as opposed to David Cronenberg's other works, there's still a ton of gruesome acts of...well, violence. So grab a cup of COFFEE! and settle in as returning guest Josh Browning from The VHS Files sits down with Nathan and Dustin to discuss the film, as well as our love for lemon meringue pie (as well as which one of us has never tried it), the pros and cons of 69ing, the Academy Award Winning Suicide Squad (it hurts to even type those words), and a ton more.
You can check out The VHS Files on YouTube and Apple Podcasts.

A History of Violence stars Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, William Hurt, Ed Harris, Ashton Holmes, Heidi Hayes, Peter MacNeill, Stephen McHattie, and Greg Bryk. Directed by David Cronenberg.

Episode 140: The Invisible Man (2020) Nov 28, 2022

Show notes

How do you make over $140 million at the box office with only $7 million in your budget? You cast Elisabeth Moss against...well, nobody, and you put Leigh Whannell simultaneously in the writer & director's chairs and watch the magic happen - or not happen. This week on the show we're taking a look (or at least trying to) at the 2020 masterpiece that is The Invisible Man. This is the quintessential example for remaking a classic with modern sensibilities. How big can Aldis Hodge's muscles get? What if The Invisible Man has to sneeze? Did they really leave Zeus the dog in this abandoned house for weeks? All of those questions and more are answered here, so slip into something comfortable while Mallie and Dustin talk about their favorite parts of the film, as well as what a $120,000 ladder would look like, the poor man's gourmet buffet, why west facing windows are terrible for your home, and much more. By the way, has anyone seen Nathan?
The Invisible Man (2020) stars Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Elisabeth Moss, Storm Reid, Aldis Hodge, Harriet Dyer, and Michael Dorman. Directed by Leigh Whannell.
