So put on your $2,000 suit and grab your fun coupons cause this week on the show, we're talking all things Wolfie, as well as that $59 million wedding you heard so much about recently, David Zaslav's ultimate plot for HBO's downfall, Bane's one weakness, and KoЯn - LOTS of KoЯn. Episode 168: The Flash (with Michael Moss) Dec 11, 2023

Show notes

If you thought one Ezra Miller on screen was annoying, wait until you see two of them. That's right, this week we're talking about the absolute abomination that is this year's The Flash. A fitting end to the DCEU, this movie is stunning - and not in a good way. Horrible CGI, completely dropped plot threads, and jokes that would have killed twenty years ago plague the entirety of this two and half hour train wreck. So crack open that can of "8 Hot Dogs" you've got in your fridge y tu mamá también as we speed through this episode (not really) discussing this putrid flick, including all of those terrible multiverse cameos, the worst Father's Day gift, the debate regarding the cover of The Dark Knight Returns, Spongebob's odd impact on this movie, and plenty more with returning guest Michael Moss. Rest in piss, DCEU!
The Flash stars Ezra Miller, Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue, Michael Keaton, Ian Loh, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, and Rudy Mancuso. Directed by Andy Muschietti.

Episode 167: Blue Is the Warmest Colour Dec 04, 2023

Show notes

There's never been a Palme d'Or given to not only the director but also the two leads of a film before 2013's Blue is the Warmest Colour, but there's rarely been a movie with as much power behind it like this one. Over the past decade, several articles detailing a mired production and testimonies of the troubling circumstances surrounding Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux's experiences making the movie seemed to have cast this one into a dark light, but there's so much good in this film that deserves to be celebrated - and we're here to do just that. So pour yourself an ice cold glass of strawberry milk and grab a hefty serving of spaghetti Bolognese cause we're talking everything Blue this week, as well as discussions about restaurants dropping their remixed versions of the Happy Birthday song, the subjective taste of La Croix, how much betters bars are than clubs, our Mount Rushmore of Neapolitan milk drinkers, and much, much more. And remember: love has no gender. Take whoever loves you.
Blue Is the Warmest Colour stars Adèle Exarchopoulos, Léa Seydoux, Catherine Salée, Jeremie Laheurte, Aurélien Recoing, Sandor Funtek, Salim Kechiouche, and Mona Walravens. Directed by Abdellatif Kechiche.

Episode 166: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance Nov 27, 2023

Show notes

After a (way) too long hiatus from discussing Korean cinema, we're back talking about the great Park Chan-wook and the first in the Vengeance Trilogy with 2002's Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. The tonal shifts in this movie are gracefully done, the performances otherworldly, and the message troubling; all what you come to expect watching a Park film. Is there really anything positive we can gleam from this absolutely bleak film? Grab your baseball bat & 10,000,000 won and tune in to find out. We'll cover every aspect of this movie, plus Dustin's shocking revelation about his blood type, Lily Gladstone's performance in Killers of the Flower Moon, some suggestions for other great Korean and Japanese films, and of course, more Tubi talk. By the way, we heard that this happened in Australia.
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance stars Song Kang-ho, Shin Ha-kyun, and Bae Doona. Directed by Park Chan-wook.

Episode 165: Fast X Nov 20, 2023

Show notes

We're thinking about starting a new tradition around here for our Thanksgiving episode where each time we'll cover another Fast and Furious movie. We test this little experiment out this week by talking about this year's latest entry into this dumb-as-hell-yet-equally-entertaining franchise with Fast X. Jason Momoa seems to be the only one here that understood the assignment, and for that we salute him. This movie is somehow overstuffed and yet feels like it's continually spinning its wheels - but is it bad? We'll let you know as we discuss the film in this explosive episode, as well as topics like how much the Toretto’s neighbors must hate them, the secret about Han's dating profile, naming the most delicious pizza as seen in a movie, and much. much more. Here we go!
Fast X stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jason Momoa, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, John Cena, Jason Statham, Sung Kang, Alan Ritchson, Daniela Melchior, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, Brie Larson, and Rita Moreno. Directed by Louis Leterrier.

Episode 164: Quantum of Solace Nov 13, 2023

Show notes

It took 148 days this summer for the studios to give the WGA fair wages and protection against AI, but if you need an example of what can happen to a film during a writers' strike, look no further than 2008's Quantum of Solace. It's often cited as the most maligned James Bond film, but let us take you back for a proper revaluation as this one may be better than you remember. Great stunts, amazing visuals, and creative editing often times outweigh clunky screenwriting and odd performances in this one. We'll discuss it all, plus casting Natasha Lyonne (and maybe Natasha Leggero) as a Bond girl, Barack Obama's thoughts Mission: Impossible II, Dustin discovering with "P" in Life of P stands for, and much, much more.
Quantum of Solace stars Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Judi Dench, Giancarlo Giannini, Gemma Arterton, Jeffrey Wright, and David Harbour. Directed by Marc Forster.

Episode 163: Alien³ Nov 06, 2023

Show notes

Rumor control! Here are the facts: even though Spooky Linings is officially behind us now, we couldn't let go of horror just yet. Alien³ is, unfortunately, not up to director David Fincher's standard, but we think there's a great movie in here that's begging to burst out. And given the possibilities of what this movie could have been, we got the best possible version. So shave your head and get off the morphine cause we're dissecting this one to tell you all of the parts we love and the parts we don't. Plus, we'll talk about getting cholera from a Xenomorph, the incredibly lazy way studios are naming their television shows these days, Shirley Temple's impressive longevity, John Carpenter's Dead Space movie (let him do it!), and a ton more.
Alien³ stars Sigourney Weaver, Charles S. Dutton, Charles Dance, and Lance Henriksen. Directed by David Fincher.

Episode 162: Candyman (2021) Oct 30, 2023

Show notes

It's no coincidence that we had five Spooky Linings episodes this season, and the titular character of our final outing this month loves the number 5. That's right: we're discussing the fantastic 2021 Candyman requel from Nia DaCosta. Is Candyman a malicious boogeyman or a ghostly Black Batman? This movie aims to get to the bottom of it - sort of. Fantastic performances, amazing visuals, and incredibly music mostly make up for a (at times) muddled script. So bandage up your hand and chain yourself to our belts as we slice open this film to talk about the legacy of Candyman, the horror of needing to use a public restroom, the secret Chicago catacombs, getting annoyed by the first song in your phone's library, and much, much more. Tell...everyone (about our show!)
Candyman (2021) stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Tony Todd, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, and Vanessa Williams. Directed by Nia DaCosta.

Episode 161: A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (with Josh Browning of The VHS Files) Oct 23, 2023

Show notes

Somehow, with over 160 episodes already in our back catalog, we still haven't covered a proper Nightmare on Elm Street movie. Well that serious infraction ends today as we're talking about none other than A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Nancy's back and so is Freddy in this classic slasher sequel that gifted us some great moments for this franchise (and some not-so-great ones too.) Does it hold up, or is this yet another objectively bad '80s slasher flick? We'll let you know as we tear into this movie and kick its ass all over dreamland. Plus, discussions on "boy math", Freddy being an LGBTQ+ ally, our My Chemical Romance inspired nun names, reaching the Saxon Peak (of being drunk), and a hell of a lot more with returning guest and The VHS Files host Josh Browning await you on the other side. What a rush!
You can check out The VHS Files on YouTube and Apple Podcasts.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors stars Craig Wasson, Heather Langenkamp, Patricia Arquette, Larry Fishburne, Priscilla Pointer, and Robert Englund. Directed by Chuck Russell.

Episode 160: Society Oct 16, 2023

Show notes

You know the schedule: first we dine, then we talk about 1989's Society! If you've never heard of "the Shunting" before, there's not much we can do to prepare you for it. And for those that have witnessed it for themselves, it's impossible to forget. Plain and simple, this is an odd movie, but in all the best ways - part Chopping Mall levels of weirdness combined with an ending that would make Cronenberg blush. So grab your pee tea and your suntan lotion cause we're conjoining with this film to discuss some of the bests and worsts: the worst line of dialogue in all of cinema, the best thing to ever come out of pornography (it's not what you think), the best candidate to remake this movie, and plenty more.
Society stars Billy Warlock, Devin DeVasquez, Evan Richards, and Ben Meyerson. Directed by Brian Yuzna.
