Episode 187: Soft & Quiet (with Priscilla Hendry) Jan 06, 2025

Show notes

It’s maybe our least favorite day of the year as we’re reminded of a truly embarrassing stain on our nation’s history, so it seems only appropriate to discuss a movie that focuses on similar themes in a microcosm. 2022’s Soft & Quiet had a release that was, unfortunately, true to its name. With that being said, we’re hoping this episode will bring more people around to this fantastic (albeit incredibly triggering and uncomfortable to watch) film. So grab a big slice of pie and a glass of $300 wine as we’re discussing the logical fallacies of the characters’ ideologies, the best Blumhouse movie, not knowing what our neighbors’ names are, and much more with returning guest Priscilla Hendry.
Soft & Quiet stars Stefanie Estes, Olivia Luccardi, Eleanore Pienta, Dana Millican, Melissa Paulo, Jon Beavers, Cissy Ly, Rebekah Wiggins, and Shannon Mahoney. Directed by Beth de Araújo.
Warning: this episode covers the topics of racism, hate crimes, sexual assault, and other acts of abuse. If you or someone you know is experiencing anything related to these acts, we encourage you to seek help. The FBI Hate Crime hotline can be reached at 1-800-CALL-FBI. You can also inform your local or state police.

Episode 186: Battle Royale Dec 30, 2024

Show notes

To cap off a pretty violent year, we’re talking about a pretty violent film with the mother of all death game movies – 2000’s Battle Royale. It was The Hunger Games before The Hunger Games that cemented itself as one of the most influential films of the aughts and beyond. If you still haven’t seen it, make that correction then change into your school uniform and grab your randomly assigned weapon as we’re talking about the problem with soju (it’s too good), our strategies for beating the game, the madness of the 2023 documentary The Contestant, and so much more in this jam-packed episode.

Battle Royale stars Tatsuya Fujiwara, Aki Maeda, Tarō Yamamoto, Chiaki Kuriyama, Kou Shibasaki, Masanobu Andō, and Beat Takeshi. Directed by Kinji Fukasaku.

Episode 185: Black Christmas (1974) (with Ashley McGlothren of Southern Haunts) Dec 23, 2024

Show notes

Ho, ho, fuck: it’s our Christmas episode of 2024, and with how dour things seemed to be this year, we could think of no better movie to discuss this week than the OG Black Christmas from Bob Clark. This small hazy and eerie horror flick bridged the gap from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho to John Carpenter’s Halloween that solidified the slasher genre for decades to come – and it’s still just as good 50 years later. So put on your comfiest sweater and grab your toilet wine cause we’re discussing our favorite Christmas songs, the oddity that is Christmas caroling, and the continuing adventures of Peppermint and Jingle Jangle with returning guest Ashley McGlothren. Plus, Dustin’s truly insane Christmas parade story. Happy holidays, you creeps!

You can check out Southern Haunts and Oh, That’s a Scary Movie on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

Black Christmas (1974) stars Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, Margot Kidder, and John Saxon. Directed by Bob Clark.

Episode 184: Joker: Folie à Deux Dec 16, 2024

Show notes

If Joker: Folie à Deux is anything, it’s unconventional; jokes on you if you were expecting otherwise from a sequel to its billion-dollar grossing predecessor. This time, Arthur Fleck has gone from performing stand-up comedy (badly) to performing showtunes (badly). But what may surprise you is that we didn’t hate this one. So put on your dancing shoes and light up as Dustin (the Mayor of Movies), Nathan (the District Attorney of Movies), and JT (the Stenographer of Movies?) discuss everything about the film accompanied by more sound effects than a Looney Tunes episode – oh, it’s gonna get obnoxious.
Joker: Folie à Deux stars Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, and Harry Lawtey. Directed by Todd Phillips.

Episode 182: Oppenheimer Mar 18, 2024

Show notes

As we close up shop on Season 7, we could not leave without talking about arguably the biggest movie of 2023. With 7 Oscars and an unfathomable amount of other prestigious awards, Oppenheimer is a once in a lifetime opportunity (or Oppentunity, if you will.) Christopher Nolan has finally unleashed Cillian Murphy to his fullest potentials, and Nolan's directing capabilities and Murphy's acting powers are both truly staggering. While 2023 was an amazing year for films, there was none better than this cautionary tale about the horrors we face and the guilt we carry regarding nuclear war. So put on your wide brimmed hat and light up that cigarette as we discuss this absolute masterpiece. We'll also reminisce over Barbenheimer, deliberate on virtual international disarmament in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, break down the ad sponsored collapsible room for American schools, and a ton (20,000 tons, to be precise) more. And we'll give you the rundown on upcoming bonus episodes in our off season, our thoughts on the 2024 Oscars, and a note about when to look for Season 8.
Thank you so, so much for making this season a truly fantastic one!
Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Dane DeHaan, Dylan Arnold, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, Matthew Modine, Gary Oldman, Alex Wolff, Casey Affleck, Jack Quaid, Emma Dumont, Matthias Schweighöfer, David Dastmalchian, Christopher Denham, Josh Peck, Tony Goldwyn, Olivia Thirlby, and James Remar. Directed by Christopher Nolan.

Episode 181: Shin Godzilla (with JT Kelly and Michael Moss) Mar 11, 2024

Show notes

Before Minus One got all the love and admiration it so rightfully deserved, there was another Godzilla movie not so long ago that really stomped its way into the hearts of millions. So after 180 episodes of the show, we're finally discussing the one, the only, the King of the Monsters (but not that movie.) We're of course talking about Godzilla, but not just any Godzilla movie; it's the 2016 masterclass in satire that is Shin Godzilla. What would it look like from a bureaucratic standpoint to actually try and stop a kaiju attack? This film shows exactly how it would (probably) go down. But that's not to say it doesn't have some incredibly shocking and horrific imagery that any kaiju lover would be sure to appreciate. So prepare your uniform and make sure your ramen doesn't get soggy as we talk about that truly wild face reveal of Gojira, plus the sensual world of commemorative popcorn buckets, the United States edging with its nuclear weapons, and creating a kaiju just for America. All of that and more with returning guests Michael Moss and JT Kelly, plus we'll spin the wheel to decide which film will have the honor of being our Season 7 finale episode next week.
Shin Godzilla stars Hiroki Hasegawa, Mikako Ichikawa, Satomi Ishihara, Yutaka Takenouchi, Kengo Kora, Matsuo Satoru, Kazuo Takahashi, and Kanji Tsuda. Directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi.

Episode 180: Totally Killer Mar 04, 2024

Show notes

Like, we're totally diving into the radical '80s this week as we're talking all about the dark comedy slasher Totally Killer from last year. This one's, like, totally got it all: tubular time travel, snappy dialogue, and a rockin' soundtrack. So grab your Aqua Net and some bottom shelf booze as we kick off Women's History Month talking about how these women kick ass. Plus, Roger Ebert giving his ratings from the afterlife, the duality of short shorts and Saving Private Ryan, slander against Smarties, and hell of a lot more await you in the killer episode. God, the '80s were wild.

Totally Killer stars Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, and Julie Bowen. Directed by Nahnatchka Khan.
