Ep 055: How to Start the Year Strong Dec 31, 2021
    Show notes

In the last episode, we talked about the value of looking back on the year that was so we can harvest all the lessons you learned this past year.

What you learned from your successes, your failures, your wins, your losses.

Because all of it has something valuable to teach us, right? And this is the ideal time of year to do that.

So, if you haven’t listened to last week’s episode called “My Learnings List”, I invite you to go back and do that.

In it, I share some thoughts on how to think about those lessons and I walk you through a super helpful exercise. This is a great way to make sure that you capture all that hard-earned wisdom and bring it with you going forward.

But today, I want to shift your focus to the future.

Because it’s New Year’s Eve. The last day of 2021!

And that means that we’re just a few short hours from a bright shiny new year.

I just love the whole clean slate thing. The idea that there’s 365 blank pages in the book of 2022. And YOU get to decide what you want to fill those pages with.

What you’ll invest your time in.

    Who you want to be.

    What you want to learn.

    What you want to experience.

But today we’re not going to talk setting goals. We’ll do that on Sunday (in the next episode).

TODAY we’re going to talk about how to get yourself READY to set big life changing goals. Because that’s what I want to invite you to do this year.

    Allow yourself to dream big.

Allow yourself to imagine that 2022 is the year you don’t just make small steps forward, but you make a giant leap forward. Maybe a leap that even scares you a little because it feels so big and impossible.

And if that’s the kind of life changing year we want to have, it’s not as simple as jotting down some goals in like 15 minutes.

Big dreams require big mindset preparation. You need to be very purposeful in how you’re thinking about the goals you select. I think of these as filters or the lens that you view the goal through. And there are three of them.

    They are:

    #1. Be future focused

    #2. No limits or boundaries

#3. Believe it is possible for you

So, let’s explore each of these filters in a bit more depth.

Ep 054: How to Harvest the Lessons Learned This Year (and Every Year) Dec 26, 2021
    Show notes

    Well hello Friends!

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas celebration filled with everything and everyone you love.

I visited family earlier this month, so this year I stayed in Dallas. And my day was super relaxing. Filled with a little football, a little Netflix-ing and some good food.

It was a sunny 80-degree day here in Dallas and for a Midwest girl, it’s kinda hard to get used to that at the end of December. Even after 7 years, it just feels…not right. I think next year, I’m gonna have to spend it somewhere wintry. Just so I can have the fireplace going and the snow outside and get to wear all the sweaters and the outerwear. You know?

BTW if you would’ve told me in the winter of 2014 that I would miss snowy weather, I never would’ve believed you. That year in Chicago it snowed 100 inches from November to April. I thought I’d never be warm again. And when I got the job in Dallas, I gave away all my sweaters and coats and got here as fast as I could.

So…just goes to show what a little distance and perspective will do for you, right? lol

And that’s what we’re going to talk about today.

Perspective on your 2021. Because it’s the last week of the year. Can you even believe it? Crazy.

And when we get to this point in the year, most of us naturally spend a little time looking back and reflecting on the year that was. At all the experiences, the achievements, the failures, the losses, the disappointments.

    All of it.

But the question is, what do we do with that information?

Are we just reflecting on our experiences in a passive way?

Or, are we taking everything we learned from those experiences and using that to make 2022 even better?

In my experience, most of us just reflect and move on.

We kind of summarize the year into a big generalization that captures our experience overall – the combination of all the good, the bad, the challenging – as either being ‘a good year’ or ‘a bad year’ or ‘a challenging year’ or whatever.

If you doubt this, just go back to 2020.

Looking back. How do you think about that year?

Most of us would say it was tough. Transitional. Isolating. Worrying. Uncertain. And that was true for most of us around the world.

But those who look deeper, who took the time to mine their experiences for lessons learned might say it was transformational. Life changing. Clarifying. Because they took the time to look at the experiences – the good and the bad – to identify the lessons.

Because the truth is, the value of the experiences we have is not just the having of them. It’s what they can teach us if we take the time to look at them.

The point I want to make is that, as humans, most of us tend to reflect on our year in a more general way or maybe not at all.

And as part of that, we lump all the experiences of the year together and come away with a generalization, a vibe or mood, that we then label as either good or bad.

By labeling the year, we give ourselves a way to think about the year that’s now in the rear-view mirror and what it meant in our lives.

Ep 053: Five Lessons I Learned From My First Year of Podcasting Dec 24, 2021
    Show notes

Well hello Friends. I hope you had an amazing week!

In Episode 51, I promised to share a bonus episode with you on the Five Lessons I Learned from My First Year of Podcasting.

I’m ten days late in releasing it so I appreciate your patience and understanding.

While I had the outline ready to record, I actually got a debilitating tooth issue the next day and it took a good week, a round of amoxicillin and an incredibly painful trip to the dentist for me to start feeling good enough to record it. But that’s all a story for another time.

The important thing is that I wanted to share these lessons because I think they will help you. I know they have me.

This podcasting journey began for me on January 1st of 2021. That’s when I had the idea. I knew it was the right next step in my business but I gotta be honest. I wasn’t 100% sure I would a)., actually do it and b). keep doing it once I started.

The whole idea of putting out content into the podcasting universe with my name on it seemed scary and dangerous.

And as a coach, I knew that uncertainty, self-doubt, and fear was coming from my primitive brain. The part of our brain that tries to keep us safe from danger.

But still, it felt like something important. Something I needed to at least try.

So, I had the idea on January 1st and then actually published the first episode on January 3rd. AND, I was going to do it all myself. Research, write, record, edit, and produce.

And on January 1st, I didn’t know how to do any of that.

I decided not to overthink it like I typically would do. Instead, I just made a promise to myself.

I promised myself that I would commit to at least one year and that I would publish a new episode every Sunday.

I chose Sunday even though it’s the lightest listening day for podcasts because most people who are unhappy in their career DREAD Sunday. I know there were many periods in my life when I felt the same. So, I wanted to do something that would give people encouraging, motivational or insightful approaches that they could use to hopefully have a better, happier, more productive work (and life) week ahead.

So, I knew this would be a growth journey for myself. Just learning how to produce a podcast and to do it consistently with quality content was going to be a challenge and I knew I’d learn a lot. But as I began mining my podcasting journey for lessons, I realized it did so much more for myself than I realized.

And I think that’s the beautiful thing about goals.

We make the goal or set the intention because it’s something we care about or want for ourselves. And when we fully commit to doing what it takes to have that new goal, to master it, it always does so much more for ourselves than we expect it to.

And this journey for me is no different. So, I hope you get some insights from these five lessons that you can apply to your own life.

Ep 052: How to Leave the Comfort Zone and Why You'd Want To (#2 of 2) Dec 19, 2021
    Show notes

In last week’s episode, we talked about the four zones of growth. And for that, I referred to a super helpful infographic that shows how the four zones relate to each other. It’s posted on my Instagram, and we’ll be referring to that again in today’s episode, so be sure to go check that out @thepurposefulcareer.

Last episode, we also talked about the things we think and feel in each zone, how the zones relate to the other and how, over the course of our lives, we go through these four zones again and again. Basically, whenever we pursue a big new goal or go after something new and big, we go through these four zones of growth. And each time we try something new, go through these four zones, we become more confident in our ability to try and master new things. The fear zone basically becomes less of a ‘thing’ for us because as we get comfortable working our way through the uncertainty and awkwardness of trying something new, most of us find a way to reframe the fear.

Which is mostly a fear of failure, right? We’ve never done the thing before so that fear zone is all about what we’re making failure mean. We’ll talk more about this in a minute, but it’s important to remember.

We also talked a lot about the Comfort Zone. It’s the great seducer. Because the truth is, this is where most people stay.

It’s why we quit on our new year’s resolutions. It’s why we don’t stick with the diet or workout routine. It’s why we stay in that job or career path we hate or the relationship we don’t want instead of going after something new.

The comfort zone seduces us because it’s the warm and cozy place where we feel safe and in control. Where we know what to expect. Where we know how to do all the things. And it’s the place where we never have to feel the discomfort or awkwardness we inevitably feel when we attempt something new.

We don’t have to deal with failure in the comfort zone. So many times, we can make the mistake of believing that this means we “should” stay in the comfort zone. And most people do.

But as I shared last week, the comfort zone is the place where passion goes to die. Stay too long in a job you hate and see where that gets you. You might be comfortable but you’re probably miserable too. Because somewhere inside, you know you really want to do something different or next level.

The comfort zone holds us back because it keeps us from trying new things. Which prevents us from growing and learning. Our world stays small and familiar which in a way can be soothing. But at the same time, we also know that it’s preventing us from living up to our full potential.

So today we’re going to talk about Leaving the Comfort Zone. Because leaving the comfort zone and heading into the fear zone takes a strong and compelling reason that’ll make the effort worth it. And it’ll take even more personal commitment to stay in the fear zone until you get through it into learning and growth.

I’m also going to give you a super helpful exercise that’ll give you the perspective you need to get going. And with the first of the year rapidly approaching, it’s the perfect time to be thinking about this as you consider what new big things you might want to tackle for next year.

Ep 051: From the Comfort Zone to the Growth Zone (#1 of 2) Dec 12, 2021
    Show notes

In January, most of us will set a bunch of goals. And when we do, a lot of us go all in. We allow ourselves to get super excited about what it will mean to have the goal. How it can change our life. All the things.

But soon after, many of us will quit. Research says it’s like 27% quit by end of week one. 31% by end of week two. And finally, by the end of the first month, more than 50% of us have quit.

Not just quit on our goals but quit on ourselves.

I don’t know if you can relate to this, but I certainly can.

I’ve quit on a lot of my goals over the years. A LOT. But not all of them.

Take this podcast for example. I started it on January 3rd, 2021, and when I started, I promised myself I’d do a new episode every Sunday.

And I’ve done it. In just two weeks, I’ll have achieved that goal.

But it wasn’t easy. I wanted to quit. So. Many. Times.

I kept telling myself I didn’t have the time.

    That it was too hard.

That it was taking too long to build my audience.

That there were other things I “should” be doing with the time I spend on the business.

And there’s a lot more excuses where that came from. Believe me.

I could fill this podcast with my excuses.

But I didn’t quit. I kept going. Every week.

And what I learned is that – no matter what the goal is – the biggest hurdle is mindset. It’s about not letting yourself talk yourself out of the goal, out of doing the work, just because it feels a little uncomfortable on occasion.

If we want to achieve a new goal, we must overcome the urge to quit.

To keep going when we feel scared or uncertain or uncomfortable.

To practice the self-command that it takes to stay consistent. Even when it’s not fun. Even when you don’t have time. Even when there’s an unplanned emergency or whatever else is going on.

And now, we’ll get into today’s topic which is The Four Zones of Growth.

This series was inspired by an infographic I as I was doing some study on positive psychology, which is one of the key methodologies I use in my coaching practice.

This infographic illustrates that the path to growth is divided into four zones.

    First is the Comfort Zone.

    Next is the Fear Zone.

Following Fear is the Learning Zone.

And last is the destination, the Growth Zone.

And if you want to see the graphic visual, check out my Instagram or Facebook page today. And by the way, if you’re not already doing so, please follow me over there. In all honesty, my social presence has left a lot to be desired this year but THAT just means that it’s at the top of the list on my big goals for 2022. So, let’s connect because there will be a lot of new goodness coming.

Anyway, the Four Zones of Growth is a cool infographic. It instantly changed how I thought about fear and the very real struggle most of us feel when we try new things.

And when I viewed growth in this new way – as four zones that we continually move in and out of – it gave me a sense of hope. And it made the fear associated with change seem less permanent. Less scary. Because this new graphic shows it as more a phase we move through and that just past that is the reward which is the excitement and passion that comes with learning new things and growing in ways that are important to you.

The graphic is amazing. Head over the Instagram and check it out. I think you’ll love it the way I do. Makes change and growth seem so much less scary.

Ep 050: From Inner Critic to Inner Coach Dec 05, 2021
    Show notes

Now that we’re into December, most of us are racing to wrap up the year at work.

And this is the time of year when most companies ask us to start capturing our accomplishments as part of the annual performance review most companies follow.

It usually begins – at least in the U.S. – with entering your accomplishments into the system to see how you tracked against the goals you set earlier in the year. This then becomes the basis for a performance discussion, usually in the very early part of the following year.

So, this was the topic of one of my sessions with a newer private coaching client earlier this week.

My client was promoted into an executive role this past Spring and since then, in her words, she’s struggled a bit. In fact, that’s why she came to me in the first place.

In the early days of her new role, she felt like she had stumbled – both in her relationships with some of her new colleagues and on one of her first big assignments. So, she wasn’t happy, and she’d spent a lot of time beating herself up. And when she got tired of that, she reached out and we started a coaching series aimed at quieting her Inner Critic.

And while she feels she’s recovered a bit and worked her way into some recent wins, this end of the year accomplishment exercise brought up all the memories of her earlier struggles. All she could think about was her struggles and stumbles and that, in her mind, she wasn’t performing as perfectly as she would’ve liked. And she was worried about what the new boss was going to say.

Now this is one of my clients who’s a super high achiever but who also has a super active inner critic. And so, as she recollected all the earlier struggles, her Inner Critic kicked into high gear, telling her things like “you’re not up to the task” and “you’re going to fail” and her general feelings of “not being good enough.”

For her, this thought pattern is deeply entrenched.

And at earlier stages of her career, she found that her Inner Critic kind of spurred her on. It generated feelings of anxiety and self-doubt, but she found it easier to push past those and keep going when she had a more junior or less visible role.

Now that she’s an executive, that same inner critic is still there, alive, and well. But NOW, the feelings of anxiety and self-doubt it produces are much more disruptive.

    She’s not sleeping.

    She’s over thinking and obsessing.

    She’s isolating from friends.

    She’s procrastinating on important initiatives.

All so she can stew about those earlier-in-the-year mistakes which she is making mean that she’s already been exposed as the fraud her Inner Critic keeps telling her that she is. And since she’s now an executive, she fears everyone is about to learn “the truth” about her…that she’s a fraud.

So, the work we’ll be doing over the next several weeks is working on how to turn down the volume on the Inner Critic and turn up the Inner Coach.

And I thought this would be relevant to so many of you because our “Inner Critic” series – episodes 6 – 9 are some of the most popular of the podcast. So, if you’re interested in better understanding your Inner Critic, you might want to go back and give those a listen.

But in this episode, we’re going a bit deeper and I’m going to share some exercises you can do to build up your Inner Coach. And to learn how to shift from the Critical Talk Track to the Coach Talk Track in real time.

Ep 049: Finding More Time in Your Day and Week When You Think There's Not Enough Nov 28, 2021
    Show notes

But yesterday, I looked at the calendar and realized it’s almost December! I say it every year, but I honestly don’t know where the time went.

And I felt that familiar panic when I realized there’s only a month left in the year. And it’s a super busy month. Which means I won’t have much TIME to finish the things I wanted to get done this year. Before I go any further, I want to point out that all those things I’m telling myself about time are just stories I’m telling myself. They’re not true. They’re just things my brain makes time mean. It’s how I tend to think about time as it relates to defined periods of time and my goals.

This made me think about the things we tell ourselves about time. Specifically, why so many of us today believe we don’t have “enough time” or why we’re constantly feeling “pressed for time.” And that’s what we’re going to talk about today. So let’s dive in.

We all have a different relationship with time. For me, the time issue came up for me because of where we’re at in the year. I like to be goal-oriented and there are certain points in the year when I naturally look back and evaluate how I’m doing with my goals. I do this to evaluate whether “I’ve used my time wisely.” And for me July and December are the two times of the year when I do this.

But my outcome is usually completely different for me in July than it is in December. And it has to do with how I look at time. In July when I look back to see how I’m doing against my goals, I feel motivated. Even if I have mixed results or even if I haven’t even started on them yet. That’s because I’ll tell myself things like “Well, I may not have gotten to that yet, but I still have six months left in the year.”

And I’m making that mean that I still have plenty of time left in the year to get things done. This makes me feel motivated. And I’m usually inspired to dive back in with renewed focus and energy. But in early December, it’s a completely different experience for me. Now we’re at the end of the year. So, when I look back to see how I’m doing against my goals, I tend to feel panicked because I don’t have ‘a lot of time left’ to go after that goal. I tell myself that the ‘year is basically behind me and it’s too late’ to do get anything accomplished.

This makes me feel demotivated. And that usually means I don’t do a thing about my goals. I just try to sweep them under my mental rug, so I don’t have to think about them and I tell myself “I’ll add those to the list next year.”

So, I’ve got this container view of time. Instead of viewing time as a continuum that’s ongoing, at least when it comes to my goals, I view time in buckets and tell myself that my goals need to be accomplished in that amount of time.

Of course, none of that is true. But it sure sounds true. At least to me. The truth is we can start our goals anytime. And what difference does it honestly make if we accomplish them within the calendar year or not? It’s completely made up. And yet, it’s something I’ve done my whole life.

Can you relate to this? With my clients I’ve noticed this usually comes up with weight loss. Like ‘do I have enough time to get to my goal weight before swimsuit season?’ and if not, ‘oh well, there’s not enough time so bring on the cupcakes.’ Right?

Or for you, the time thing might be different. You might be a parent with several kids, all of whom are involved in activities. And that, coupled with your job and daily life might have you in a const

Ep 048: Gratitude and Your Career Nov 21, 2021
    Show notes

Well hello Friends! I hope you had an amazing week!

This coming Thursday is Thanksgiving in the U.S. and it’s always been one of my favorite times of the year. I love everything about it.

    The traditions.

The time with family and friends.

    The food.

    The football.

    The Hallmark Christmas movies.

    Who’s with me?!

But more than all of that, I love the reminder to be thankful. To just choose to be grateful for ALL OF IT.

Because with our busy lives and careers and families, it’s so easy to forget to do that. To either take for granted everything we have or maybe even failing to see how there’s ALWAYS something to be grateful for even when we’re in the middle of really dark times.

And that’s the part I wanted to talk about today. The importance of being grateful ON PURPOSE. Even when things in your life might not be going exactly as planned.

Because being grateful is a choice. It’s a decision we make.

It’s about deciding to view the circumstances of our lives through a lens that actively seeks out the good. And then allowing yourself to really see it and appreciate it.

Especially important after the past year.

I mean, come on. 2020? Hot mess express, right?

That’s probably a descriptor most of us would agree with, even in this divided culture we live in right now.

The great toilet paper shortage of 2020?

    The endless months of isolation.

The not seeing family or friends.

The not going to restaurants of movies.

    People getting sick.

    Losing jobs.

    All of it.

So today, I want to talk about gratitude as a choice.

I know it’s a little trite to talk gratitude in November. But I want to talk about gratitude as a daily practice. A tool that will help you see your life and the world that will serve you in ways you can’t even imagine right now.

I call it The Gratitude Game.

It’s a practice I started doing several years ago when I was going through a time in my career that I didn’t love.

I had a great job and I loved WHAT I did every day and many of the people I worked with, but I DIDN’T love or even like really, the culture of the company I worked for.

And on top of that, I had a super long commute – like one hour each way on a GOOD day – and I didn’t love that either. Sure, the podcasts helped (Thanks Brooke Castillo and Amy Porterfield) but many days it wasn’t enough to stop my mind from fixating on the dread of the day to come.

    The nonstop politics.

    The bad decisions.

The relentless news of more layoffs.

And so many other things that aren’t worth mentioning now but that I know many of you can relate to. We all have experienced times like this.

So, suffice it to say that when the alarm clock went off every morning at 5:30, it took everything I had to drag myself out of bed and get ready to face the day I knew I had ahead of me.

And when we’re in a time like that – and we all go through them at some point – it’s easy to get lost in that misery.

To be so focused on the things you HATE about something that you find it impossible to think of even one thing that you love.

Ep 047: Why We Sometimes Hide Our Successes Nov 14, 2021
    Show notes

So…in last week’s episode, we talked about visibility. Specifically, why it’s important and how to get more of it in your career. Because as we all know, if we want to get ahead, it’s not enough to just do great work. Other people need to recognize our contributions and our potential.

But today I want to talk about the opposite problem.

Which is…what happens when we get the visibility and recognition that we worked so hard for and then find ourselves intentionally shrinking back from it, either diminishing what we did or maybe hiding that accomplishment altogether.

I mean, it’s not logical right?

Why would we nearly kill ourselves to achieve something, only to get it and then either make light of it or hide it altogether?

Well, it may not make sense, but the truth is it happens all the time.

In fact, according to a study by the University of Chicago, 82% of respondents said they’ve hidden their accomplishments from someone else at least once in their lives.

    82%? Wow.

But maybe that number shouldn’t have surprised me because I’m in the 82%. I’ve done it more times than I care to count. And if I’m being honest, it wasn’t even a conscious thing and it wasn’t even just with one person in particular. It was kind of most people in general. I’ve just kept lots of accomplishments to myself over the course of my life. And I never really stopped to think about what it was costing me until it came up for one of my clients this week.

My client took over his family’s business a few years ago. The business hadn’t been doing well when he stepped into the role, but he’s been working hard to turn it around and now, all those efforts are paying off.

He’s got a flood of new clients.

Revenue is up by like 3x in just a year.

And now, he’s won a few national awards.

He knows that’s important in attracting new clients, so he’s featured them in some of his advertising. But in our last session, he mentioned that he’d gotten several more and was planning to keep them a secret.

And because he seemed less than enthused about that, I asked how he felt about it. His answer was “embarrassed.”

When I asked why he felt embarrassed he responded, “It’s too much. What are people going to say?”

To which I responded, “What do YOU think people are going to say?”

And he responded, “People are going to think I’m arrogant and that I think everything is about me.”

Ep 046: Visibility & Your Personal Brand Nov 07, 2021
    Show notes

Today I want to talk about visibility within your career. Specifically, why it matters, why we need to proactively manage our visibility within our job and our company and what to do when you feel like it’s become an issue for you.

As I researched the topic this week, I noticed that there’s a lot of different definitions out there. But in my business, I define visibility within your career as the need to be “broadly recognized for your skills, ideas and accomplishments.”

Now, you might be thinking “why do I need to be broadly recognized? Isn’t it enough that my boss sees my value?”

And the short answer is, no. Regardless of the size of the company you work in it takes more than one person – your boss – to see your value. And this also affects entrepreneurs. For them it’s about how they show up with their employees, clients and even within the business communities they’re part of.

It’s really about proactively managing your personal brand. How you want others to view you. And that’s not something you want to leave to chance.

The truth is if you want to keep moving forward in your career, if you want to be the first one, they think of with new assignments or next level opportunities, it’s going to take more than your direct manager to recognize and see your worth.

It’s the same for entrepreneurs. If you want your employees to follow you, if you want to be at the top of the list for the next great speaking engagement within your community, if you want to be a leader within your niche, you can’t just leave it to change. You have to be visible.

The way I see it, visibility in business comes down to two things – both of which are tied to your personal brand or how you want to be thought of.

The first is something I call leading out loud. This is about having the confidence and self-belief to speak up. To believe in yourself and in your ideas so much that you lean in. You share your ideas and concerns, you’re not afraid to express an opposing opinion. You volunteer for hard or high-profile assignments. Basically, you put yourself out there.

The second, is about what I like to call 360-degree personal brand management. This is about being smart about managing your brand with the important stakeholders who need to have a positive opinion of you so that you can get the things you want. And this isn’t about being a shameless self-promoter, but it is about taking smart, proactive steps to ensure that the people who you want and need to be aware of you, are. And that you’re controlling your own narrative and not relying on others to do that for you. An important part of it.

So, you might be thinking that professional visibility is just a problem for introverts. I can assure you, it’s not. I know many natural introverts who are amazing at both leading out loud and 360-degree brand management.

The truth is having a visibility problem can become an issue for anyone at any stage of their career – no matter how extroverted you might be. I think it comes from a lack of confidence or a feeling of uncertainty and that can happen to any of us if we land in a less than ideal work situation.
